Book excerpt: "Poppy Tooker says her new book “Drag Queen Brunch” was a community effort that practically wrote itself. It combines brunch recipes from Tooker and New Orleans restaurants and short profiles of local drag queens Vinsantos, Jessica Champagne, Laveau Contraire and a dozen others. There are 60 recipes for cocktails and traditional brunch dishes such as grits and grillades, pain perdu and calas. Restaurant recipes include Brennan’s bananas Foster, Palace Cafe’s crabmeat cheesecake, Saba chef and owner Alon Shaya’s shakshuka and chef Isaac Toups’ boudin breakfast burritos. The coffee table book features Sam Hanna’s vibrant images of queens and brunch dishes. It also incorporates local history, including Tooker’s favorite ghost story of Julian Eltinge, a cross-dressing actor popular in the early 1900s."--Gambit.

Book excerpt: When Americans think of brunch, they typically think of Sunday mornings swelling into early afternoons; mimosas and bloody Marys; eggs Benedict and coffee cake; bacon and bagels; family and friends. This book presents a modern history of brunch not only as a meal, but also as a cultural experience. Relying on diverse sources, from historic cookbooks to Twitter and television, Brunch: A History is a global and social history of the meal including brunch in the United States, Western Europe, South Asia and the Middle-East. Brunch takes us on a tour of a modern meal around the world. While brunch has become a modern meal of leisure, its history is far from restful; this meal’s past is both lively and fraught with tension. Here, Farha Ternikar explores the gendered and class-based conflicts around this meal, and provides readers with an enlightening glimpse into the dining rooms, verandas, and kitchens where brunches were prepared, served, and enjoyed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.

Book excerpt: Author and culinary historian Poppy Tooker combines family photographs, stories, and recipes from Pascal's Manale into a collection that is much more than a cookbook. Tooker's exploration into the storied Uptown restaurant, one of the "jewels in New Orleans' culinary crown," reveals the history of the family behind it and their influence on the city's culinary culture. In contrast to the chef driven French dishes of the Creoles, Sicilian cuisine came straight from Mama's kitchen just as the signature dishes on the tables of this beloved eatery. A bastion of Italian cuisine in New Orleans, recipes for Pascal's Manale's best-known dishes, including their famous barbequed shrimp, stuffed artichokes, and meatballs have fed their fans for over a century!--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

Book excerpt: A "Breadhead" is a dedicated baker, someone who bakes often, who thinks and dreams about bread and is not afraid to experiment. In this new book by Father Dominic ("The Bread Monk" of public television fame), you'll learn more than just basic techniquesyou'll find out why yeast behaves the way it does, how to substitute different flours in a recipe, and how to take a simple dough and make it extraordinary for a special occasion. Starting with tools of the trade (you need less than you think), Father Dom takes you through the baby steps of baking all the way to beautiful loaves that will amaze and delight your family and friends. Special attention is paid to kneading-a stumbling block for many beginning bakers-and simple shaping techniques that can make your loaves look terrific. You'll find braided loaves, flatbreads, pretzel bread and bagels, dinner rolls that look like roses, butterfly-shaped breakfast treats, and a muffin recipe that uses a secret ingredient: melted ice cream! And all in Father Dom's funny and friendly style of instruction, with helpful photos and illustrations. Father Dominic Garramone, OSB, former host of the PBS cooking show Breaking Bread with Father Dominic, has written six cookbooks, most recently Thursday Night Pizza. His first children's book, Brother Jerome and the Angels in the Bakery, was the recipient of the 2011 Christopher Award for children's books (ages 8 to 10) and the 2011 Catholic Press Association 1st Place Award for children's books.
