Book excerpt: Abstract: The 752 meter section of the Miocene Monterey exposures between Point Dume and Paradise Cove is described in detail using meter-by-meter Spectral Gamma Ray data, lithologic descriptions, sandstone analysis (percent sandstone and thin section petrography) and X-ray diffraction data. Samples were analyzed to determine total organic carbon (% TOC) and diatom assemblages. The stratigraphic section is subdivided into four distinct members and is portrayed in a new stratigraphic column. In stratigraphic order, the members are the Dolomitic Phosphatic Shale Member, the Porcelanite and Shale Member, the Mixed Clastics Member and the Cherty Diatomite Member. High TOC values in the Dolomitic Phosphatic Shale range between 4.2 and 7.5%. Opal-CT phase silica occurs in cherts and porcelanite and biogenic Opal-A phase silica occurred in the diatomites. Rocks showing a complete diagenesis to Quartz phase silica are not in the section. Bedding confined fractures and joint sets between different siliceous rocks are abundant in the Porcelanite and Shale Member. The base of the Mixed Clastics member has high energy deposits indicating down-slope movement with major sandstones and conglomerates. The top of the section contains the Cherty Diatomite member and consists of rhythmically bedded pure diatomite, "speckled" beds, muddy diatomites, siliceous/calcareous mudrocks and Opal-CT chert. Dolostone forms a significant component of the rock type throughout the section. The Monterey Formation is found throughout Coastal California and in most of the Neogene sedimentary basins in the State. It is highly petroliferous, forming both the source and reservoir rock. Understanding the exposures in Malibu, CA contributes to the understanding of this economically important formation.

Book excerpt: Reservoir Characterization is a collection of papers presented at the Reservoir Characterization Technical Conference, held at the Westin Hotel-Galleria in Dallas on April 29-May 1, 1985. Conference held April 29-May 1, 1985, at the Westin Hotel—Galleria in Dallas. The conference was sponsored by the National Institute for Petroleum and Energy Research, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Reservoir characterization is a process for quantitatively assigning reservoir properties, recognizing geologic information and uncertainties in spatial variability. This book contains 19 chapters, and begins with the geological characterization of sandstone reservoir, followed by the geological prediction of shale distribution within the Prudhoe Bay field. The subsequent chapters are devoted to determination of reservoir properties, such as porosity, mineral occurrence, and permeability variation estimation. The discussion then shifts to the utility of a Bayesian-type formalism to delineate qualitative ""soft"" information and expert interpretation of reservoir description data. This topic is followed by papers concerning reservoir simulation, parameter assignment, and method of calculation of wetting phase relative permeability. This text also deals with the role of discontinuous vertical flow barriers in reservoir engineering. The last chapters focus on the effect of reservoir heterogeneity on oil reservoir. Petroleum engineers, scientists, and researchers will find this book of great value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of how landforms develop and of rates of processes has traditionally relied on the study of surfaces and sediments. Soils that have developed on geomorphic surfaces have the potential to record more accurately the history of landscape development. Historically, however, soils have been largely ignored by most geomorphologists in favour of concentration on stratigraphic and sedimentologic relationships (i.e. the deposits) or morphometric (i.e. the form of the landscape) studies. Only recently have most geomorphologists and geologists begun to appreciate the importance and utility of soils in studies of landforms. This book focuses on the relationship between soils and landforms and landscapes, mostly in non-glaciated areas, thus filling a major gap in the geomorphology literature. It is directed both at geomorphologists (including geologists and geographers) and pedologists.

Book excerpt: This book presents the urban geology master plan for California, focusing on the nature, magnitude, and costs of geologic hazards in the state, and recommendations for their mitigation. It provides a comprehensive overview of the geologic hazards in California, such as earthquakes, landslides, and floods, and proposes strategies to minimize their impacts. The book is a valuable resource for urban planners, geologists, and policymakers interested in the management of natural hazards in urban areas. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soils and Geomorphology, now in its third edition, remains popular among soil scientists, geomorphologists, geologists, geographers, and archaeologists. While retaining the useful "factors of soil formation format," it has been extensively revised, incorporating a considerable amount of new research and offering a greater number of topics and examples -- particularly in the chapters "Weathering and Soil Development with Time" and "Topography: Soil Relations with Time in Different Climatic Settings." Greater emphasis is placed on the role of dust in pedogenesis, and new data are included on tropical soil development, global soil-loess relations, neotectonics, and reduction processes. The text discusses field applications such as the use of soils in recognizing climate change, estimating the age of geological deposits, and dealing with environmental problems such as acid rain. New "how-to" appendices on soil descriptions and calculating the profile development index are also included. Soils and Geomorphology is an ideal text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in courses on pedology, soil science, Quaternary geology, archeology, and sedimentary petrology.
