Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixed-mode matrix fracture in notched off-axis undirectional composite is investigated. First the problem is treated by an exact formulation based on elastic fracture mechanics. It is then simulated by a finite element model. Correlation with experiment suggests a fracture criterion based on total strain energy release rate as the fracture parameter. Keywords: Composite material, Graphite epoxy, Mixed mode fracture matrix cracking, Singular integral equation, Finite element simulation, Experiment analysis correlation.

This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a unified approach to fracture behavior of natural and synthetic fiber-reinforced polymer composites on the basis of fiber orientation, the addition of fillers, characterization, properties and applications. In addition, the book contains an extensive survey of recent improvements in the research and development of fracture analysis of FRP composites that are used to make higher fracture toughness composites in various applications. The FRP composites are an emerging area in polymer science with many structural applications. The rise in materials failure by fracture has forced scientists and researchers to develop new higher strength materials for obtaining higher fracture toughness. Therefore, further knowledge and insight into the different modes of fracture behavior of FRP composites are critical to expanding the range of their application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The failure of composite laminates is invariably preceded by the cracking of matrix and interface, which appears as the cracking of unidirectional plies along the fibers and as delamination between plies. Since the ply cracking and delamination appear as macroscopically self-similar crack extension at least within each ply, they are amenable to the linear elastic fracture analysis.

Book Synopsis Stress and Energy Based Fracture Conditions for Fiber-Wise Splitting in Composites by : N. Suresh
Download or read book Stress and Energy Based Fracture Conditions for Fiber-Wise Splitting in Composites written by N. Suresh and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the critical conditions for an interface-related fracture in epoxy-based graphite fiber-reinforced structural laminates. The specific fracture mode under consideration is that of a splitting crack along the fiber direction. Fiber-wise splitting often occurs in laminates that have holes, sharp notches, or cutouts due to stress concentration near these locations. The problem has been treated as an interface shear-dominated fracture, and methods of fracture mechanics are frequently employed for the purpose of analysis. Within this context, suitable mixed-mode fracture criteria are required. Past studies have used the strain energy release rates in the formulation of the desired criteria, and, depending on the test model used, the formulated criteria came in a variety of forms. Among several possible forms, the one form involving the total strain energy release rate (GI + GII) = constant has often been recommended. Recently, however, a form employing the stress intensity factors KI and KII has been deduced from a set of fiber-wise splitting test data. An apparent difference existed between criterion deduced based on G and that deduced based on K. Theoretically, of course, the two deduced criteria should be mutually equivalent.

Download or read book Mechanical Response of Composites written by Pedro P. Camanho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-06-20 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Themethodologyfordesigninghigh-performancecompositestructuresisstill evo- ing. The complexity of the response of composite materials and the dif?culties in predicting the composite material properties from the basic properties of the c- stituents result in the need for a well-planned and exhaustive test program. The recommended practice to mitigate the technological risks associated with advanced composite materials is to substantiate the performance and durability of the design in a sequence of steps known as the Building Block Approach. The Building Block Approach ensures that cost and performance objectives are met by testing greater numbers of smaller, less expensive specimens. In this way, technology risks are assessed early in the program. In addition, the knowledge acquired at a given level of structural complexity is built up before progressing to a level of increased complexity. Achieving substantiation of structural performance by testing alone can be p- hibitively expensive because of the number of specimens and components required to characterize all material systems, loading scenarios and boundary conditions. Building Block Approachprogramscan achieve signi?cant cost reductionsby se- ing a synergy between testing and analysis. The more the development relies on analysis, the less expensive it becomes. The use of advanced computational models for the prediction of the mechanical response of composite structures can replace some of the mechanical tests and can signi?cantly reduce the cost of designing with composites while providing to the engineers the information necessary to achieve an optimized design.
