Book Synopsis Ascendancy Women and Elementary Education in Ireland by : Eilís O'Sullivan
Download or read book Ascendancy Women and Elementary Education in Ireland written by Eilís O'Sullivan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines the lives of six female members of the Irish Ascendancy, and describes their involvement with educational provision for poor children in Ireland at the end of the long eighteenth century. It argues that these women were moved by empathy and by a sense of duty, and that they were motivated by political considerations, pragmatism and, especially, religious belief. The book highlights the women’s agency and locates their contribution in international and literary contexts; and by exploring sources and evidence not previously considered, it generates an enhanced understanding of Ascendancy women’s involvement with the provision of elementary education for poor Irish children. This book will appeal to scholars and researchers in the fields of Education and History of Education. It will also have broad appeal for those interested in Gender and Women’s Studies, in Georgian Ireland and in the history of Ascendancy families and estates.

Download or read book Thomas Kent written by Meda Ryan and published by The O'Brien Press Ltd. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1865 into a farming family of Fenian tradition near Fermoy in Co. Cork, Thomas Kent became involved in the Land League in the 1880s and lived for a time in Boston, where he was active in Irish cultural organisations. In 1889, back in Ireland he joined the fight against injustices and evictions and was imprisoned several times for his part in orchestrating a boycotting campaign. Dedicated to freeing Ireland, Thomas and his brothers mobilised in Co. Cork at Easter 1916 and waited in vain for direct orders from Dublin headquarters. During a gunfight at their home – the only fighting to take place in Co. Cork – a policeman and Thomas's brother Richard were killed. Thomas was charged with 'taking part in an armed rebellion' and sentenced to death. He was executed by firing squad in Cork Barracks on 9 May 1916. Meda Ryan's biography shines light on a man who was 'Ireland's forgotten patriot' until a state funeral over ninety-nine years after his death, in September 2015.
Book Synopsis Flight from Famine by : Donald MacKay
Download or read book Flight from Famine written by Donald MacKay and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2009-03-23 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 1991 QSPELL Prize for Non-fiction One of Canada’s founding peoples, the Irish arrived in the Newfoundland fishing stations as early as the seventeenth century. By the eighteenth century they were establishing farms and settlements from Nova Scotia to the Great Lakes. Then, in the 1840s, came the failures of Ireland’s potato crop, which people in the west of Ireland had depended on for survival. "And that," wrote a Sligo countryman, "was the beginning of the great trouble and famine that destroyed Ireland." Flight from Famine is the moving account of a Victorian-era tragedy that has echoes in our own time but seems hardly credible in the light of Ireland’s modern prosperity. The famine survivors who helped build Canada in the years that followed Black ’47 provide a testament to courage, resilience, and perseverance. By the time of Confederation, the Irish population of Canada was second only to the French, and four million Canadians can claim proud Irish descent.

A Century of Politics in the Kingdom captures the exhilarating highs and lows of politics in Kerry, featuring tales of scandal, punch-ups, election-campaign shenanigans, bitter inter-dynastic contests, as well as the stories of the ground-breaking Kerry politicians who made their mark on the national stage and beyond. This fascinating book draws on new material from the political parties' archives, original research and candid interviews. Featured are comprehensive biographical details of every Kerry Teachta Dála and senator since the foundation of the Irish State, seminal debates and discussions, rivalries and resentments, and good old-fashioned fun and games - all of which has characterised the political cauldron in the county over the last century.
