Book excerpt: Misty Row is a fictitious, mist-filled, small town, set in Upstate New York. It is about a prominent, wealthy, African-American family--The Morgans. They have secrets and plenty of them. Deep, dark secrets and many issues. A host of multi-ethnic characters make the story entertaining and an edge-of-your-seat read. At times, it can be very dark, very moody, very colorful and always compelling. The happenings and goings-on in this tiny, smouldering hamlet make for plenty of surprises and much intrigue. The elemental, nightly mist, which filters the town, serves as an ominous backdrop for the stifling emotions with which the characters grapple, as well as the almost-choking challenges that they face. The story begins with twenty-eight year old homosexual Trey Morgan returning to his home town--Misty Row--after a mysterious, ten year absence. He has his relatively new lover, Darian Wakefield, in tow. Once Trey becomes reacquainted with the members of his family--especially his morose cousin, Antoinette, and his secret identical twin brother, Travis--the drama really begins. Darian gets an eyeful and then some. Disturbing, family secrets are exposed, as events crescendo into a shocking, final, cliff-hanging chapter--which could rival the nighttime dramas of yesteryear. Written in the old fashioned, soap opera style; this novel is very sexually explicit and, sometimes, quite graphic. The basic elements of the soap genre are all here: including backstabbing, plotting, love affairs, forbidden passions, and raging emotions. Definitely escape, fantasy reading, yet very real and very much based in the seeds of life's harsh and eye-opening realities. Just what secrets are those Morgans hiding?

He thought that by being a police officer, he would be doing his civic duty and bringing good to the world""but the last accident he witnessed had shattered that belief. All he saw was darkness""the worse in people. Where was the kindness and the love? He felt he needed a break and to get far away from this darkness. After a talk with his chief, he decided to go on a road trip. It was on that trip he found a remote property for sale, a wonderful place beside a lake, just like he had envisioned. It was peaceful and quiet""what solitude! Daniel would have to make a decision. Moving would mean leaving his loving family""his twin sister and father""leaving the police force, and changing his life completely. Is that what he really wanted to do? Would this place give him the peace he was seeking? Would he be able to survive all by himself with no one else around him? When he returned to work, the darkness hit Daniel again, and he knew he could no longer work as a police officer. It was then he decided to purchase the property and make the move. Now his life was completely changed. No longer could he go for coffee at Tim's or to a fast food place for a quick meal. He found his life was full of new challenges to overcome, a lot of work to do just to survive day-by-day, and new concepts to learn. It all depended on him. Did he have it in himself to survive? Would he find what he was seeking? Would he find the peace he craved?

Paul and Penny Mason are spending the summer at the family lake house with their troubled, teenage daughter, Elsie, in a last-ditch effort to save their crumbling marriage. But the tension between them only thickens when they arrive at their once-idyllic summer home, a place that now feels eerily cold and darkly foreboding. It quickly becomes clear that all is not right. Penny is plagued by horrific, recurring nightmares. Paul and Elsie are surprised by the curious appearance of a sad, strange woman—a woman who purports to know them, but who calls them by names that are not their own. The mystery only deepens when they discover an antique box in the house. Inside is a photo of the woman, alive in a distant past. Who is she? And what is the source of the seeping, chilly discomfort that has suddenly settled over the family? The answer lies within Penny’s disturbing dreams and Elsie’s fragile emotional state—and when long-buried secrets reveal themselves, it will be the most frightening day of their lives. . . .

This book was released on 1999-03-11 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length biography of the American artist Arthur B. Davies, who played a major role in twentieth-century American art's coming-of-age. It was Davies who made possible the landmark exhibitions of The Eight and The Rockwell Kent Independent, and in 1913 he emerged as the mastermind behind the Armory Show, the first large-scale display of European modern art in the United States. Dozens of the country's best-known collectors purchased their initial avant-garde acquisitions at this show, and U.S. artists, in turn, could no longer be kept in check by the conservative National Academy after viewing works by Duchamp, Matisse, Picasso, and others. Drawing on extensive archival research, including previously unavailable letters and diaries, this book covers the breadth and depth of the artist's life and career, from his boyhood in Utica in the 1860s; through his close association with such artists and collectors as Robert Henri, John Sloan, Alfred Stieglitz, Lizzie Bliss, and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller; to his death in Italy in 1928 in the company of his mistress, with whom he had lived a secret double life as "David A. Owen" for more than twenty years. Included are 101 color and black-and-white illustrations of Davies's own work, ranging from romantic dream visions to fragmented cubist forms, as well as photographs depicting his family and friends. Davies, who worked in over twenty different media, was called "one of the foremost artists in this country" and "one of the greatest artists of our time," and his work is represented in major collections throughout the United States. The illustrations alone, many of works in private collections and available here to the public for the first time, as well as the appended chronology, exhibition checklist, and list of addresses, make this a valuable addition to the library of every art dealer, curator, and student of American art. But equally fascinating is the story of the forces, personalities, and relationships that helped shape the course of twentieth-century American art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of all the best fiction and poetry about runners and running. An inspiring book, brimming with courage, exaltation, fear, pain, sweat, hope, and elation. "Animates the spirit of running better than any other book." —Runner's World "Battista has gathered all the memorable (and widely scattered) jewels of running literature and melded them into a single glorious volume. I enjoyed it immensely and will keep it close at hand for many years." —John L. Parker, author of Once a Runner For anyone who loves reading as much as running, The Runner's Literary Companion is the ultimate pleasure. It contains all the greatest appearances of runners in literature: indelible scenes from classic running novels, and unforgettable short stories and poems. Whether you are a weekend jogger or an Olympic contender, whether a sprinter or a marathoner, or anything in between, if you are a thinking runner, this book has something that will set your heart racing, or send you out the door in running shoes, or simply bring a smile of recognition to your face—the recognition of kindred souls. These twenty-four stories and twenty-four poems are told in a splendid mix of voices and literary styles. They include a love story, two war stories, and a horror story; several murders and a surreal comedy. But they all are teeming with runners. They feature characters who are present in the lives of many runners already: Quenton Cassidy, the young miler in John L. Parker's cult novel, Once a Runner, Smith, the fierce rebel of The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner, and Archie Hamilton, the ill-fated sprinter from Gallipoli. New heroes (and some villains) abound, ranging from the shy, persistent high school runner, John Sobieski, to James Tabor's nameless avenging drifter, who acts out every runner's darkest violent Impulse. Not to mention Pete Nilson and Brad Townes, two marathoners who (for different reasons) run themselves near to death, and find there strange bliss and redemption. And Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parker (Squeaky), a girl in Harlem whose sprinting brings her joy and strength. Besides the extraordinary characters, and some plots which could adrenalize the dead, these stories and poems offer beautiful, inspiring descriptions of the physical act of running. The Runner's Literary Companion contains running as every runner dreams of it—fluid, powerful, and graceful. It anatomizes the vast complexity of this seemingly simple act. And it finds equal nobility in champions and unknowns. Each story and poem pulses with courage, fear, pain, hope, and elation. Fiction and poetry share with running an exhilaration and an intensity; they concentrate and magnify real life. The Runner's Literary Companion, by gathering these stories and poems, offers a glimpse of running as the transcendent thing it can be. And above all, this book will bring hours of reading pleasure to anyone who runs, or who once ran, or who hopes to run someday.

Book excerpt: Translated to English, this collection of contemporary Chinese poetry examines humanity’s relationship with nature and the ecological crisis. Influenced by both the “gray, sinister sea” near the village where Yi Lu grew up during the Cultural Revolution, and the beauty of the sea in the books she read as a child, Sea Summit is a collection of paradox and questioning. The sea is an impossible force to the poet: it is both a majestic presence that predates man, and something to carry with us wherever we go, to be put “by an ancient rattan chair,” so we can watch “its waves toss” from above. Exploring the current ecological crisis and our complicated relationship to the wildness around us, Yi Lu finds something more complex than a traditional nature poet might in the mysterious connection between herself and the forces of nature represented by the boundless ocean. Translated brilliantly by the acclaimed poet Fiona Sze-Lorrain, this collection of poems introduces an important contemporary Chinese poet to English-language readers. Praise for Sea Summit “Yi Lu is a theatre scenographer, and her poems brim with the imagistic tendencies we might expect from a visual artist. More specifically, her poetic style fits that of a theatrical set designer. Within the poetry of Sea Summit, the images are like set pieces. They play supporting roles as they help to tell the speaker’s stories. . . . Sensitive and poignant poetry.” —The Literary Review “A compilation of over twenty years of work. . . . Yi’s poetry shows the world as staggeringly simultaneous, from a crowded conference room in the middle of the city to the titular wave rising under the incredible volume of the ocean. . . . This collection is a great introduction to Yi Lu, already one of the most widely read poets in China.” —The Los Angeles Review “With this selection of more than 80 of her ecologically conscious lyric poems, Yi receives a generous introduction to English readers. The pastoral is Yi’s mode of choice, and the poems here take as their subject matter the natural world as well as the human experience of it. . . . Sze-Lorrain’s steadfast translations, presented en-face, make accessible one of China’s most famous woman poets.” —Publishers Weekly
