Book excerpt: Aria and Sebastian are wildly different in every way but the one that truly matters: their love for one another. But their newfound happiness is about to be torn apart. When Sebastian pulled into the parking lot of the apartment complex where he hoped to start a new life after six years trapped in an emotional hell, all he wanted was to live out his days in quiet solitude. That went out the window when he came face to face with Aria, a leather-clad goth transgender woman who towered over him and whose dark brown eyes burned with the anger that had been her constant companion since childhood. But the flames of that anger were doused the instant Sebastian told her, “You’re beautiful.” No one had ever spoken those words to Aria. Considered a freak by most people, she had few friends and intimidated everyone she met. Except Sebastian. Neither of them wanted companionship or expected to ever find happiness. And yet, as the unlikeliest of pairs who shared common interests and deep emotional and physical scars, they did. At least until the nightmare of a past they unknowingly shared caught up with them.

Book excerpt: Imagining the Woman Reader in the Age of Dante brings to light a new character in medieval literature: that of the woman reader and interlocutor. It does so by establishing a dialogue between literary studies, gender studies, the history of literacy, and the material culture of the book in medieval times. From Guittone d'Arezzo's piercing critic, the 'villainous woman', to the mysterious Lady who bids Guido Cavalcanti to write his grand philosophical song, to Dante's female co-editors in the Vita Nova and his great characters of female readers, such as Francesca and Beatrice in the Comedy, all the way to Boccaccio's overtly female audience, this particular interlocutor appears to be central to the construct of textuality and the construction of literary authority. This volume explores the figure of the woman reader by contextualizing her within the history of female literacy, the material culture of the book, and the ways in which writers and poets of earlier traditions imagined her. It argues that these figures are not mere veneers between a male author and a 'real' male readership, but that, although fictional, they bring several advantages to their vernacular authors, such as orality, the mother tongue, the recollection of the delights of early education, literality, freedom in interpretation, absence of teleology, the beauties of ornamentation and amplification, a reduced preoccupation with the fixity of the text, the pleasure of making mistakes, dialogue with the other, the extension of desire, original simplicity, and new and more flexible forms of authority.

Book excerpt: She is but a Woman, the first in-depth study of medieval Scottish queens, investigates the relationship between gender and power in the medieval Scottish court by exploring the art of queenship as practised by Joan Beaufort and Mary of Guelders, queens of James I and James II. These women were excluded from authority but clearly possessed power as wives and mothers of kings. They established and cultivated relationships with members of the court, learned about Scottish political life and supported their husbands in the business of government. The book examines for the first time the arrivals of Joan and Mary in Scotland, their social and political status, their relationships with their husbands and families, and their roles in international diplomacy. This modern re-evaluation of the role and power of the medieval queen is a thematic exploration rather than a biographical study. It situates the experiences of Joan and Mary within a broader European context and provides a new perspective on Scotland's political, social and cultural links with Europe in the fifteenth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently a long-lost journal belonging to Dracula author Bram Stoker was discovered in his great-grandson Noel's dusty attic. Published now to coincide with the centenary of Stoker's death, the text of this stunning find, written between 1871 and 1881, mostly in his native Dublin, will captivate scholars of Gothic literature and Dracula fans alike. Painstakingly transcribed and researched, the journal offers intriguing new insights into the complex nature of the man who wrote Dracula more than one hundred years ago. Assisted by a team of scholars and Stoker historians, Dacre Stoker and Professor Elizabeth Miller neatly connect the dots between the contents of the journal and Bram Stoker's later work, most significantly Dracula. Until now, discussion of the very private Bram Stoker has, by necessity, been largely speculative. Other than names and dates provided by biographers, and Bram Stoker's own sparse self-revelation in his non-fiction, little has been available to support character studies of this fascinating Victorian gentleman. This personal journal shows Stoker's private thoughts and his developing style, and is a veritable treasure trove of oddities, musings and anecdotes.

Book excerpt: Did you know that the English language has over 150 words for the adjective 'drunk' developed over 1,000 years? Be prepared to learn words you have never heard before, find out fascinating facts behind everyday words, and be surprised at how lively and varied the English language can be. Published to critical acclaim in 2009, the Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary is the first comprehensive thesaurus in the world to arrange words by meaning in order of first recorded use. Using its unique perspective on how the English language has developed, Words in Time and Place takes 15 themes and explores the language in these areas over time - explaining when new words appeared, where they came from, and what such changes say about times in which they emerged. The themes chosen are varied, universal topics and show the semantic range of the thesaurus and what it can tell us about the words used in areas of everyday life. Learn about the different words for dying and money, or types of pop music, as well as words for a privy, oaths, and words for being drunk. Written by the world's leading expert on the English language, David Crystal, the book carries his trademark style of engaging yet authoritative writing. Each chapter features an introduction to the language of that topic, followed by a timeline of vocabulary taken from the historical thesaurus showing all the synonyms arranged in chronological order. The timelines are annotated with additional quotations, facts, and social and historical context to give a clear sense of how words entered the English language, when, and in which context they were used. Words in Time and Place showcases the unique and excellent resource that is the Historical Thesaurus and reveals the linguistic treasures to be found within. This fascinating book will appeal to anyone with an interest in words and in the development of the English language.
