Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mistletoes are a fascinating group of parasitic flowering plants that occur throughout most of the World. In mainland North America north of Mexico, there are only two native mistletoe groups: the dwarf mistletoes and the leafy mistletoes. The dwarf mistletoes are widespread, common parasites of coniferous trees. They are considered among the most important forest tree diseases in North America. Although, the leafy mistletoes are also widespread, they are not as damaging to their hosts. Throughout human history, mistletoes have played an importantrole in mythology, Christmas traditions, and as a part of the medicinal arsenal with which to fight disease. Mistletoes also have important relationships with many other living organisms. They provide valuable food sources and habitat for birds, mammals, insects, and fungi. Leafy mistletoes are dependent on birds like the phainopepla illustrated here, for seed dispersal. This book covers all the dwarf and leafy mistletoes recognized by the author that are found in the continental United States and Canada. General descriptions, geographic distributions, and lists of hosts for each mistletoe are provided. In addition, distribution maps illustrate where each mistletoe is found, and photos help acquaint readers with their general appearance and habit. Supplemental materials include: a table listing principal and less commonly infected hosts of each species of dwarf mistletoe that can be used as a short cut for their identification; dichotomous keys to assist in identification for those who enjoy this form of discovery; and sidebars covering a range of interesting topics related to the biology, classification, ecology, and cultural significance of mistletoes expands this user-friendly guide.

Yet, while common, oak woodlands are anything but ordinary. In a book rich in illustration and suffused with wonder, author Kate Marianchild combines extensive research and years of personal experience to explore some of the marvelous plants and animals that the oak woodlands nurture. Acorn woodpeckers unite in marriages of up to ten mates and raise their young cooperatively. Ground squirrels roll in rattlesnake skins to hide their scent from hungry snakes. Manzanita's rust-colored, paper-thin bark peels away in time for the summer solstice, exposing sinuous contours that are cool to the touch even on the hottest day. Conveying up-to-the-minute scientific findings with a storyteller's skill, Marianchild introduces us to a host of remarkable creatures in a world close by, a world that "rustles, hums, and sings with the sounds of wild things."

Book excerpt: Field and Laboratory Guide to Tree Pathology presents a selection of tree diseases, along with related field and laboratory activities, to provide students with the basic information and skills necessary for tree disease diagnosis. The diseases discussed in this book intend to be representative of the major health problems of forest and shade trees. The book is organized into four parts. Part I presents some basic information about the tools, techniques, and terminology associated with the study of tree diseases. The subsequent parts describe the infectious and noninfectious diseases. The last part describes several exercises ranging from elementary to advanced, which demonstrate certain disease concepts and allow students to experience the techniques utilized in disease diagnosis. A broad selection of exercises is provided to allow choices dependent on facilities, equipment, supplies, and student level. In addition to students, professionals in arboriculture, forestry, landscape architecture, nursery practice, and other plant science specialties will find this book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mistletoes are an enigmatic group of plants. Lacking roots and depending on other plants for their livelihood, they have inspired a range of beliefs throughout the world. Some people regard them as being endowed with magical properties, others as destructive weeds that devalue native habitats, and still others as beautiful native plants that support wildlife. This second edition of Mistletoes of Southern Australia is the definitive authority on these intriguing native plants. With specially commissioned watercolours by artist Robyn Hulley and more than 130 colour photographs, it provides detailed species accounts for all 47 species found in the region. It is fully updated throughout, with new distribution maps and new sections on fire, climate change and mistletoes in urban areas. It also describes the ecology, life history and cultural significance of mistletoes, their distribution in Australia and around the world, and practical advice on their management.
