Book excerpt: When little Conrad Van der Bosch claims he has an invisible tiger called Sigmund hiding on his wardrobe, his child-psychologist father sees the ‘lie’ as a deliberate act of juvenile defiance. Doctor Van der Bosch is concerned that the boy is mentally maladjusted and in an attempt to terrify Conrad into admitting that there never was an invisible tiger, creates the terrifying figure of Mister Holgado, a child-eating monster who is apparently hiding inside Conrad’s wardrobe, waiting to consume the little boy. This triggers a battle for supremacy, as Conrad and his father struggle to manipulate the myth of Holgado. In desperation, as the Doctor fails to curtail his son’s imagination, he realises he has no choice but to become the child-eating Holgado. Shortlisted for the Writers' Guild Award for Theatre Play for Young People 2013.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 306 trilogy is dedicated to the memory of the 306 British soldiers of the 1914-18 war who were shot at dawn, by their own side, for what was then called cowardice or desertion. This final play, The 306:Dusk, is set on November 11 2018 and considers the impact of the First World war on today's attitudes to and experiences of war. 2018. Armistice Day. A pregnant school teacher is haunted by the story of her grandfather's story of having to kill his deserter friend. On a school trip to the battlefields she goes AWOL in a wood whilst on this very personal mission of remembrance. An injured veteran of the Iraq war has yet to cope with the aftermath of killing, and still relives the nightmare of battle. A blindfolded soldier wakes up after 100 years to hear the birds singing once more... The 306: Dusk is a unique piece of music theatre about memory and forgetting, friendship and betrayal, exploring what the Great War means to us today. From the 2-minute silence at 11am to dusk that same day, three disparate characters, a string quartet and a choir of voices from the past and present show how our world is shaped by the war to end all wars. The play ends with a roll call of the first names of the 306 soldiers. It also includes extracts from the diary of Oliver Emanuel as he researched and created the 2018 production. The 306: Dusk was a National Theatre Scotland and Perth Theatre production, co-commissioned by 14-18 NOW, the UK's arts programme for the First World War centenary and is the concluding part of the 306 Trilogy, following 2016's premiere The 306: Dawn, and performances in 2017 of The 306: Day.

Getting the sweet had nothing to do with being good. 'Badger Do Best' has landed, bringing with it a new world of rules and regulations. But the kids in the classroom are fighting back. Tired of being guinea pigs in yet another government scheme, can the class of 4N bring down the education regime set to pacify them? After years working in the classroom, Molly Davies imagines a mutiny of eight-year-olds in her play commissioned by the Royal Court. God Bless the Child received its world premiere in the Upstairs space on 12 November 2014, directed by Royal Court Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone.

Now his only connection to the outside world is through his younger sister Isla, who looks after them both whilst their father is away in Ibiza on 'business'. With only a strange menagerie of creatures (including an iguana called Scott and a corn snake called Charlene) to keep them company, each day looks pretty much the same as the last – until their quiet lives are interrupted by a visit from Jessica, a benefit assessor, determined to prove that Robert is fit for work. But Jessica soon realises that one size certainly does not fit all, as she suddenly stumbles across a secret about Robert that catapults her head first into a universe of infinite possibilities. Merging biting social commentary and fantasy in unexpected ways, How to Disappear is a pitch-black comedy which gives a voice to those who often go unheard.

Book excerpt: Based on La Nona by Roberto Cossa Yer Granny is a riotous new comedy about a diabolical 100-year-old granny who’s literally eating her family out of house and home. She’s already eaten their fish and chip shop into bankruptcy and now she’s working her way through their kitchen cupboards, pushing the Russo family to desperate measures just to survive beyond 1977. As proud head of the family, Cammy is determined that The Minerva Fish Bar will rise again and that family honour will be restored – and all in time for the Queen’s upcoming Jubilee visit. But before Cammy’s dream can come true and before Her Maj can pop in for a chat, a single sausage and a royal seal of approval, the family members must ask themselves how far they will go to solve a problem like Yer Granny.

Book excerpt: When Pablo Martín Sánchez discovers that he shares his name with a Spanish anarchist who was executed in 1924 for the attempted overthrow of Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship, he sets out to reconstruct his life story. Through references to key events in Europe’s history, including the sinking of the Titanic and the Battle of Verdun, and the influence of intellectuals such as Miguel de Unamuno and Victor Blasco Ibañez, The Anarchist Who Shared My Name elegantly captures the life of a man who sought to resist political injustice and paid the ultimate price for his protest. Martín Sánchez’s thrilling tale is the unsettling chronicle of a dark chapter in Spanish history, as courageous as it is timely.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gruesomely funny series for fans of Roald Dahl and Lemony Snicket. When twins Greta and Feliks are sent to the ill-omened Schwartzgarten Reformatory for Maladjusted Children it seems their fate is sealed: that is until they are rescued by the glamorous Olga Van Veenen, a fabulously wealthy children's author, plagued by writer's block. But Olga's life is apparently in danger, threatened by a second-rate novelist who wishes to see his rival dead. When Olga and her faithful retainer, Valentin, disappear from the eerie and imposing Castle Van Veenen, many miles north by train from Schwartzgarten's Imperial Railway Station, Greta and Feliks conclude that the murderous novelist has finally exacted his revenge on Olga. Only by using their wits are the twins able to rescue their guardian before it is too late. As if by magic, Olga's writer's block lifts, and she quickly produces and publishes a new book for children. The novel has eerie similarities to the twins' adventures in Castle Van Veenen, and Greta and Feliks begin to question whether their guardian has deliberately placed them in danger for literary inspiration. But Olga Van Veenen has come too far to have her reputation muddied by the allegations of the twins, and will stop at nothing to silence them forever. With cover and chapter head artwork by Chris Riddell.
