Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Methods for Sunday-School Workers, Vol. 1 The day is coming when the Sunday-school that has not sent some of its members to a home or for eigh mission field, while at the same time numbering still others in its membership as volunteers pledged to go, will be ashamed and self-condemned. The reason why Sunday-schools generally have not yet reached this high but practicable standard is because most Sunday-school workers do not know what the Sunday-school is, and what is the real end of its effort. For example, the-sunday - school is often spoken of as the church of to-morrow, or the child of the church, or the children's church, or as a branch or a depart ment of the church. None of these definitions tells the whole truth. All of them are misleading. Again, the purpose of the Sunday-school is com mouly spoken of as Bible-study. And the great end of the Sunday-school is usually said to be soul-winning. Both of these statements are not only inadequate, but positively harmful in the narrowing, stultifying limita tions that they impose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Firing Line With the Sunday-School Missionary The study of missions in the homeland is incomplete without a review of the labors of the Sunday-school missionary. A cause which has assumed such proportions as this within the short space of a quarter of a century, and upon which the Presbyterian Church is expending more than two hundred thousand dollars annually, is worthy of prayerful study and investigation. The Presbyterian Church at large has been sadly lacking in knowledge of Sunday-school missionary work. It is a form of missionary effort which has a sphere distinctly its own, cultivating fields beyond the reach of the activities of any other benevolent board of the church, and producing results that should satisfy the most exacting. Indeed it is a frequent remark of those who are led to examine into the details of its operations, "I had no idea our church was engaged in missionary work of that kind; I want to have a share in it." It seemed proper, therefore, that the cause should be presented in all its aspects and in concrete form, as a live missionary issue; not a history of the work of past years, interesting as that would be. Neither could it be a biography of the faithful workers who have labored so self-sacrificingly on the firing line, some of them for a quarter of a century; though that of itself would form an inspiring record of missionary service. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Methods in Sunday-School Work: The New Evangelism Explanatory. The genesis of this book was my desire for the improvement of the Sunday-schools under my immediate care. As a pastor, I found myself pitifully inadequate to meet the requirements of Sunday-school work. It had been my privilege but a few years ago to study in a representative theological seminary, where I covered the full courses of "catechetics," "pastoral theology," etc., yet the training of this representative institution did not "train" relative to the principles, problems, needs and growing demands of this foundation work of the Church, the Bible-school. In parish work, therefore, I found myself in the growing years unequipped, and face to face with the awful alternative that the Sunday-school must be improved or suffer the loss - as the Church at large, for the most part, has suffered for years - of scores of youth. I raised the question, "What can I do?" For suggestion I consulted every known publication on Sunday-school work and methods. These books say many excellent things and can be read with profit, but I found too much of theory, abstract reasoning, and presentation of thought from the view-point of one man for the meeting of practical need. I, therefore, sought through personal visitation and correspondence to learn from the most experienced and successful Sunday-school workers who are now actually in the field and who are doing things, - I sought to learn from them the full descriptions of their actual working methods. A generous response gave a wealth of information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missions in the Sunday School: A Manual of Methods No Sunday-school can live within four square walls. To attempt it is suicidal. The Church, Sunday-school, or individual, for that matter, whose Christian life is self-centered, has already started on a fatal decline. There is absolutely no exception to this rule. On the other hand the opposite is true: that the Church, Sunday-school, or individual, with a world view of the kingdom of Jesus Christ and recognizing responsibility thereto, will grow in spirituality and power. We have forgotten all too long that the way to have plenty at home is to "make a little cake" for God first. Never have I held a book in my hand with greater joy than this volume. Never was a book more greatly needed, especially in the Sunday-school world. It deals with fundamentals. The very foundation of our success is here treated with a master hand and in the simplest and most practical manner. The more our Sunday-schools know about missions the more they will desire to help the cause. The more they help, the greater will be their interest in their home work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Missionary Minutes: Brief Missionary Material for Platform Use in the Sunday School for 52 Sundays in the Year Owing to the brevity of time of the Sunday-school session, and the lack of facilities for more intensive and efiective work, the plan of missionary instruction presented in this volume is the only one that is feasible in a very large number of Sunday-schools. It is hoped, however, that the Sunday-school that uses this five. Minuteea-sunday method for a year or more, will be led in due time to undertake in certain classes or departments, at least, more thorough mission study.
