They made a desperate race and in four days caught up with the convoy. From the journals and letters of Mrs. Whitman, Mr. Spalding, and Mr. Gray, we get a vivid account of this journey, on which the first white women and the first wagon crossed the Rocky Mountains--a journey full of significance in the future history of Oregon. "Since we have been here," writes Mrs. Whitman to her family, "we have made our tent. It is made of bed ticking. In 1857 he printed the first of a series, twenty-six little vol umes, from early manuscripts, chie y relating to the missions. In these he adopted the type, Initial letters, head-lines, and orna ments used by Cramoisy, King's printer at Paris, who published the Jesuit Relations. This delegation came, however, not on civic matters but on a religious quest, hoping, or so the reports ran, to discover the truth about the white men's religion. The story of this meeting inspired a drive to send missionaries to the Northwest.
