Download or read book Missing Reels written by Harry Waldman and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first half of this century, motion pictures were often considered disposable once their circulations were over. The recycling of used film and the use of components for war efforts contributed to the loss of many movies, as did the unstable nature of the nitrate film itself. The loss of extant works has created gaps in the national cinematic history of the United States and most European countries. Eighty percent of all Western-made films produced before World War I are considered lost, while 15 percent of the films made from 1930 to 1950 are also missing. Here are descriptions of nearly 1,000 of the lost American and European films produced between 1900 and 1950, featuring the talents of the still famous as well as the now obscure. The films are arranged by country and reveal the remarkably prolific early filmmaking in countries like the Netherlands and Sweden. Each entry includes production information, cast, synopsis, history, and insights from reviews when available. Photographs from these films provide glimpses of what once was. An extensive index is included.

Book Synopsis On Women's Films by : Ivone Margulies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Women's Films looks at contemporary and classic films from emerging and established makers such as Maria Augusta Ramos, Xiaolu Guo, Valérie Massadian, Lynne Ramsay, Lucrecia Martel, Rakhshan Bani-Etemad, Chantal Akerman, or Claire Denis. The collection is also tuned to the continued provocation of feminist cinema landmarks such as Chick Strand's Soft Fiction; Barbara Loden's Wanda; Valie Export's Invisible Adversaries, Cecilia Mangini's Essere donne. Attentive to minor moments, to the pauses and the charge and forms bodies adopt through cinema, the contributors suggest the capacity of women's films to embrace, shape and question the world.
Download or read book Fips written by Geoffrey Brooks and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 1999-07-27 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weuner Frbringer (Fips) became one of the most successful U-Boat commanders in WW1 through a blend of skill, daring and, by his own typically modest admission, sheer luck. This vivid memoir, never before published in English, makes compelling reading. This is an inspiring and chivalrous story; it is ironic then that, when finally sunk by the Royal Navy off the East Coast of England, Fips was machine-gunned in the water, contrary to repeated Government denials of such behaviour.
Book Synopsis Eleanor Roosevelt by : Keri F. Dearborn
Download or read book Eleanor Roosevelt written by Keri F. Dearborn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleanor Roosevelt was an American influencer. Using her own words, personal documents, past perspectives, and new biographical research, this book introduces young adult readers to Roosevelt not only within her own historical context, but connected to contemporary issues. Using Eleanor Roosevelt's own words, personal correspondences, private documents, and a wide range of past perspectives and new biographical research, this book tells the intimate story of a real woman who struggled with a lack of self confidence but built a supportive network of like-minded activist women to realize change. One hundred years ago, Roosevelt was drawn into politics and public service by events that seem ripped from current events—an opiate crisis, a global pandemic, unsafe working conditions for immigrant women, and the human costs of war. Roosevelt's story mirrors the challenges of the 21st century and offers real examples of how change is possible. For students of history, politics, and women's studies, this book brings together past perspectives with new biographical scholarship, primary resources, and Roosevelt's own words to understand the female role models who shaped her and how Roosevelt in turn built a women's network of friends and activists that changed U.S. politics and society.
Book Synopsis Lindsay Anderson Revisited by : Erik Hedling
Download or read book Lindsay Anderson Revisited written by Erik Hedling and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the British film-maker Lindsay Anderson. Anderson was a highly influential personality within British cinema, mostly famous for landmark films like This Sporting Life (1963) and If....(1968). Lindsay Anderson Revisited deals primarily with hitherto unexplored aspects of his career: his biographical background in the British upper class, his devoted film criticism, and his angry relationship to contemporary society in general. Thus, the book contains chapters about his childhood in India, his writings about John Ford, his relationship to French star Serge Reggiani, his work on TV in the 1950s, his troubles with the British film establishment, and his gradually emerging preoccupation with being Scottish, not English. Also featured are chapters written by close friends of Anderson, who died in 1994, dwelling on his penchant for controversy and quarrel, but also on his remarkable artistic talent and commitment.
Book Synopsis Attack and Sink by : Bernard Edwards
Download or read book Attack and Sink written by Bernard Edwards and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2002-03-28 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attack and Sink' was the signal that Admiral Donitz sent to the commanders of the 21 U-boats of the Markgraf wolf-pack on the 9th September 1941. Convoy SC42 consisted of sixty three merchant ships, many of them British, many old and dilapidated and all slow and heavy-laden with vital supplies for the United Kingdom, was strung out in 12 columns abreast, covering an area of 25 miles of inhospitable ocean. They set sail from 'Nova Scotia' at a time when the German U-boats were sinking more than one hundred ships a month. Their escort of one destroyer and three corvettes of the Royal Canadian Navy, all untried in combat, were hopelessly outclassed when the battle of SC42 commenced when it was in sight of the coast of Greenland. The battle lasted for seven days and covered 1,200 miles of ocean. Captain Bernard Edwards has written another superb story of courage and endurance and has dedicated this book to all those who fought and died in the battle of convoy SC42. First hand accounts of the participants on both sides add to the interest and drama.

Book Synopsis Ratbag, Soldier, Saint by : Lian Knight
Download or read book Ratbag, Soldier, Saint written by Lian Knight and published by Hybrid Publishers. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lian Knight has recreated the amazing life of her grandfather, a war hero. What has been published about him is extraordinary – 2000 newspaper articles, many printed more than a century ago. Yet almost nothing written about him is consistent. The press varied his name, his age, his place of birth, where he lived and what he did. There were whispers that he emerged from poverty, delivering fish before dawn in London’s East End in the markets and laneways of Jack the Ripper’s local haunts, before joining the army at just thirteen. Averse to authority, he was a military superior’s nightmare. He served in South Africa and India before migrating to Australia. When World War I broke out, he was despatched to the Western Front where, gassed, bombed and working against remarkable odds, he saved the lives of many and was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for valour. He became legendary, gaining medals and escaping death on numerous occasions. After the war he married and finally returned to Australia. He was famous in England and Australia for his bravery and kindness to his fellow man. Later as a movie star, a politician, a boxer, a celebrated Australian identity and a good Samaritan, his notoriety seemed to know no bounds. Which of these stories were real? A mixture of truth and fantasy has continued to be reported ... until now. ‘From page 1 of Ratbag, Soldier, Saint, I entered the magnificent maze of the life of Issy Smith, wonderfully led through that life by Issy’s granddaughter, Lian Knight.’ – General Sir Peter Cosgrove ‘This book brilliantly recounts the unusual life of Sergeant Issy Smith VC, a Jewish war hero of WWI, revealing the many challenges he and his family faced in Australia and England during the war and in the post-war years. A captivating read!’ – MAJGEN (Ret’d), Emeritus Professor Jeffrey V Rosenfeld
Download or read book Quota Quickies written by Steve Chibnall and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first of two volumes, will provide a major new history of the British B film, tracing the development of the low-budget supporting feature from the 1927 Films Act (which introduced a quota system for the distribution and exhibition of indigenous product) to the age of television, when B film producers channelled their energies into making TV programmes. Along the way, the authors will address leading producers and studios, B film stars, distributors, the genres and themes that tended to dominate B film production (comedy, horror, crime and fantasy). 'Quota Quickies' will include a case study of the B films of Michael Powell. The authors' argument is that the B film was hugely important in British cinema history in offering an opportunity for British actors and technicians to develop their careers, and that the films themselves provided an outlet for the exploration of peculiarly British cultural concerns in an industry traditionally dominated by Hollywood output. They also contend that some of the films stand up well to contemporary viewing and are deserving of critical re-evaluation.
