Book excerpt: "Don't you ever want to run away from Christmas?"Mildred Budge's answer to Dixie was immediate and truthful. "Yes, yes, yes," Mildred said with conviction. She couldn't stop saying yes, though the very idea that a good church lady would want to run away from the occasion during the year that marked the birth of Jesus-- the reason for the season for a tried and true church lady of the South-- was almost beyond explanation."Then, let's go. Let's go to Fountain City and find Mr. Fixit and eat sublime pies," her friend Dixie urged. The two needed Mr. Fixit because of a recently bought vintage music box that won't play. They can't hear the song, and the angels on top can't fly. The problem feels urgent. By the time Mildred and Dixie find Mr. Fixit and sample pies at the shop next door, the two runaways from Christmas find themselves right at home in Fountain City and more comfortable with who they are.If you are looking for an uplifting story that reminds you of the reason for the season after all, you'll surely enjoy this newest short adventure of Mildred Budge and her new friend Dixie, a woman whose multiple personalities encourages readers to enjoy the dimensions of personhood that can't be labeled and which often respond to beauty and shared joy.If you don't love Christmas and especially if you do, grab a copy of this charming Christmas story today. You'll be smiling by the time Mildred asks Dixie, "Are you ready to go home?" And you'll want to go with them.

Book excerpt: In the first full-length follow-up to Miss Budge in Love, Simpkins explores some of the challenges Miss Mildred Budge faces as she attempts to settle into retirement in the garden district of Montgomery, Alabama, Cloverdale. Readers will be thrilled to find that this novel contains all of the humor and the Southern flavor of her earlier short story collection but with added intrigue and story depth that only novel-length work can provide. Simpkins presents comfortable stories and relatable characters that are deceptively deep and complex, but while you may stop to consider some of the issues of faith and aging explored here, the people and situations are just as likely to make you laugh out loud. This first novel in the projected series is highly recommended for the light-of-heart and deep-of-faith. Mildred Budge In Cloverdale is the first book in this series and was originally published as Cloverdale.

Book excerpt: The e-mail Danny and Allison read on their new computer in 1996 looks no different from the millions of others received by Web users around the world, with one glaring exception--it was sent by their dads who died during the 1970s. While residing in the afterworld at an amenity-laden paradise called Midway Manor, guitar-strumming Mickey Parks and piano-playing Lloyd Wallace monitor and manipulate the lives of their adult children on earth from the mid-'70s through the 1990s. Tampering with the facility's sophisticated computer, the dads thrust Mickey's daughter Allison and Lloyd's son Danny into a passionate but sometimes stormy relationship-a relationship steeped in Danny's heavy drinking and entangled in the often-zany world of men's adventure magazine publishing. After carefully implementing a plan to send their son and daughter a gift of knowledge that could enrich their lives forever, the dads' brief contact is cut short. They are banished to another destination in the afterworld, but not before they impart indisputable proof of life after death--and unwittingly put Danny's and Allison's earthbound lives on the line.

Nancy and Ned are visiting Coffin Hall, an estate turned rare books library, doing research on the library’s rumored ghost for an episode of the NedTalks podcast when a fire breaks out in the records room. One of the library’s security guards accuses Ned of arson—after all, he was the only one in the room when the fire started—but Ned swears it wasn’t him. He was trying to stop the fire. He tells Nancy he saw a lady in blue right before the incident, and thinks it was Henrietta Coffin, the ghost of Coffin Hall! Nancy is confident her boyfriend is innocent, and she’s determined to identify the real culprit, though she’s pretty sure it wasn’t of the paranormal sort. When she investigates further, she learns that the fire was just the latest in a string of recent strange and inexplicable incidents plaguing Coffin Hall. It’s increasingly apparent that someone has more than a passing interest in shutting down the library. But who—or what—is responsible? And why?

Do you know the name of the woman who received the Wright Brothers' Master Pilot Award at the age of ninety-seven? Well, her name is Pearl and this is a story about her and her family and friends. To be more precise many of these stories are hers-authentic memories written by an amazing woman. Pearl Bragg Laska Chamberlain was the first woman to fly her own plane from the Lower 48 up the Alaska Highway to Alaska. She worked as a flight instructor, bush pilot, cryptographer for the Pentagon, flew in five Powder Puff Derbies, and was also a WASP trainee and famous "99er." Pearl was a member of the UFO's (United Flying Octogenarians), and the mayor of Fairbanks actually declared a "Pearl Laska Chamberlain Day." Pretty impressive, eh? I am very excited to bring you this fabulous collection of "Braggin' Rights" stories that begin in the early 1900s on Chestnut Mountain in Summers County, West Virginia. Tales about bootleggin' and learning to fly in the Appalachians are followed by adventures to exotic places. Narratives about living in the polar region and escapades of an aviatrix are accompanied by heartfelt memories of real-life victories and the sorrows of a lifetime. So settle down into the cockpit, buckle your seatbelt and get ready for an astonishing and amazing flight.

Book excerpt: In this second full-length Mildred Budge novel, the retired school teacher gets physical. By temperament a contemplative, in this story Mildred bravely leads the way to safety after the pulpit committee with whom she is traveling in an old-fashioned Buick flies off an embankment. Not only does Mildred discover in herself reservoirs of physical strength, but she also experiences new spiritual adventures as she continues to "work out her salvation" within the context of friendships and church relationships. Mildred Budge in Embankment challenges men and women to reconsider the tensions between grace and human will while experiencing glimpses of heaven along the way. It is perceptive, funny, and uplifting. Readers will enjoy the journey with Mildred and her friends. Study guides for book clubs for all Mildred Budge books are available upon request to the author through her website or on Facebook. Preceding titles are Miss Budge in Love, a collection of short stories, and Mildred Budge in Cloverdale, a revision of the earlier book Cloverdale-the first novel in the series. Interview with Daphne Simpkins: Q: Why did you choose a plain and not-so-young school teacher as your main character in a series of novels about church life--not a deacon, minister or elder? A: Most of us are plain people. Mildred Budge is the centerpoint in the stories but almost everyone around her becomes more attractive when seen through her eyes or in her company. I like to think she sees and brings out the best in other people. Q: What do you hope to reveal about church life through these stories? A: That loving God through Christ is real, authentic and fascinating. So often the Christian experience is summed up as a cliche but it isn't stale or easily reduced to a cliche. It is fresh, vital and real. Q: What do you consider the biggest problem with revealing Christianity to a world that has grown inured to the basic tenets of the scriptures? A: Grace is free and people want to earn the love of God. No one can earn the love of God--they can only say yes to it. And then live grateful lives. Q: What is the biggest misconception about Jesus? A: For me, Jesus is the master creator--the perfect man who came to fix what the first imperfect man broke: an intimate relationship with God. Jesus is that threshold, that doorway through which lonely, wounded people can pass into the green pasture of being loved, accepted and renewed. Pass through that doorway and you begin to find out who you are and how you fit in His world--not the broken one we all inherited. Jesus' world is better. Q: You are referring to some serious subjects here, but many people like your books because they are funny. I had to put Cloverdale and Miss Budge in Love down and laugh out loud before I could continue reading. A: Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed them. Life is funny. I laughed while I wrote them. Q: What is your next project? A: I have two projects ongoing right now. The first is The Bride's Room, which is the next Mildred Budge and the other novel has only a working title which might best be kept a secret for a while. Q: Do you write every day? A: I pray every day that I can write well on the days when I can type. Q: What do you hope to do with your work? A: To tell the truth even if it isn't a popular truth. Jesus saves. He saves people who don't know they need to be rescued. That's the Jesus I know and celebrate in the adventures of Mildred Budge, a plain church lady.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A much neglected field of study has been opened by the research of the author into the history of the Christian church from its apostolic origins to the close of the eighteenth century. Taking as his thesis the prominence given to the Church in the Wilderness in Bible prophecy, and the fact that “‘the Church in the Wilderness,’ and not the proud hierarchy enthroned in the world’s great capital, was the true church of Christ,” he has spent years developing this subject. In its present form, Truth Triumphant represents much arduous research in the libraries of Europe as well as in America. Excellent ancient sources are most difficult to obtain, but the author has been successful in gaining access to many of them. To crystallize the subject matter and make the historical facts live in modem times, the author also made extensive travels throughout Europe and Asia. The doctrines of the primitive Christian church spread to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. As grains of a mustard seed they lodged in the hearts of many Godly souls in southern France and northern Italy — people known as the Albigenses and the Waldenses. The faith of Jesus was valiantly upheld by the Church of the East. This term, as used by the author, not only includes the Syrian and Assyrian Churches, but is also the term applied to the development of apostolic Christianity throughout the lands of the East. The spirit of Christ, burning in the hearts of loyal men who would not compromise with paganism, sent them forth as missionaries to lands afar. Patrick, Columbanus, Marcos, and a host of others were missionaries to distant lands. They braved the ignorance of the barbarian, the intolerance of the apostate church leaders, and the persecution of the state in order that they might win souls to God. To unfold the dangers that were ever present in the conflict of the true church against error, to reveal the sinister working of evil and the divine strength by which men of God made truth triumphant, to challenge the Remnant Church today in its final controversy against the powers of evil, and to show the holy, unchanging message of the Bible as it has been preserved for t hose who will “fear God, and keep His commandments” — these are the sincere aims of the author as he presents this book to those who know the truth. MERLIN L. NEFF.

Book excerpt: Boldly go where few have gone before! Endorsed by the World Wildlife Fund. Features 26 colour and black-and-white photographs and maps. "The Power of the Barren Lands may be beyond words but you wonât come any closer than those on the following pagesâ¦" âMONTE HUMMEL West of Hudson Bay in Canadaâs north, an enormous triangle, twice the size of Alberta or Texas, forms the largest chunk of wilderness left on the continent. The word "tundra" may conjure up an image of a desolate, treeless plain, but this mainland portion of the Canadian arctic is far from featureless. The area is home to millions of geese and other birds, and is the haunt of some of the worldâs last, great migratory herds of large herbivores and the predators that follow them. Discovering Eden is a collection of stories, essays and commentaries about the authorâs life in the remote wilderness and his hopes and dreams for its future. It is about the land and the animals that live there, and what they have taught the author. Throughout the book the author tries to explain, within the limitations of language, the lure of the Barren Lands and why this place became for him a personal Eden. The book also recounts adventuresâa personal, inner one for the author, and the thrill of canoeing this untouched wilderness for those who travel with him on his tours.(September 2003)
