Book Synopsis English Medieval Misericords by : Paul Hardwick
Download or read book English Medieval Misericords written by Paul Hardwick and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Misericord carvings present a fascinating corpus of medieval art which, in turn, complements our knowledge of life and belief in the late middle ages. Subjects range from the sacred to the profane and from the fantastic to the everyday, seemingly giving equal weight to the scatological and the spiritual alike. Focusing specifically on England - though with cognisance of broader European contexts - this volume offers an analysis of misericords in relation to other cultural artefacts of the period. Through a series of themed "case studies", the book places misericords firmly within the doctrinal and devotional milieu in which they were created and sited, arguing that even the apparently coarse images to be found beneath choir stalls are intimately linked to the devotional life of the medieval English Church. The analysis is complemented by a gazetteer of the most notable instances. Dr Paul Hardwick is Professor in English, Leeds Trinity University College.

Book Synopsis Church Misericords and Bench Ends by : Richard Hayman
Download or read book Church Misericords and Bench Ends written by Richard Hayman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-20 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing disappearance of stained glass in medieval churches, the surviving wood carvings on church misericords and bench ends are extremely important in providing an insight into the medieval mind. The carved images were often used to convey the messages of the Christian faith in the Middle Ages but they were not just concerned with religion and religious symbols – they also told stories of mythology, humour and satire, showing illustrations of everyday life and people. This book outlines the history of church seating and discusses the craftsmen and the influences behind their work. Using illustrations, the author then explains the subject matter of these wood carvings, revealing how one can discover so much about medieval life – the spiritualism, moralism and the wit – within the carvings still found in churches today.

FH Crossley spent over twenty years recording, measuring and photographing churches across England and Wales: from his archive of over 10,000 pictures, the 380 reproduced here show the finest examples. Accompanied throughout by FE Howard's clear and authoritative text, the survey includes rood screens, misericords, quire stalls, pulpits, lecterns, doorways and font covers, highlighting both the incredible levels of skill and fascinating regional variations in the woodwork. English Church Woodwork is both ambitiously wide in scope and satisfyingly comprehensive: a fitting tribute to what is arguably the finest legacy of the medieval ages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Green Man has many facets, many dimensions. He peers through his leaf mask in hundreds of church misericords and stone carvings. His innate link with the changing seasons and fertility is revealed in the medieval poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and in summer folk customs such as Jack in the Green, the Castleton Garland and the Burry Man. Perhaps he even lurks in the legendary hero of the Greenwood, Robin Hood. The Authors have been running summer schools and courses on the Green Man for many years, and in this fascinating study they discuss his significance in medieval times and explore the modern development of the concept of the Green Man. The book also contains a detailed gazetteer of over 200 sites, featuring almost 1000 carvings (many photographed by Felicity Howlett).

Book Synopsis Wooden Images by : Juanita Ballew Wood
Download or read book Wooden Images written by Juanita Ballew Wood and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using 163 photographs of images carved on the underside of medieval choir stalls in the churches and cathedrals of England in the thirteenth through sixteenth centuries, this work provides a spirited examination of the social history of ordinary men and women during the late-medieval period. This examination is particularly useful in that the choir stalls have become less accessible to the public in recent years. Misericords have received some scholarly attention, but this work is the first to interpret the carvings as social commentary. They are not examined as decorative embellishments or pieces of church furniture, but rather "read" as intimate glimpses into the thoughts, actions, and beliefs of a segment of the English medieval population. Whatever amused, angered, frightened, or elated the common person is recorded here in these extraordinary records.
