Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of American Indian Languages, Vol. 2: With Illustrative Sketches In its general phonetic character, at least as regards relative harsh ness or smoothness of acoustic effect, Takelma will probably be found to occupy a position about midway between the characteristically rough languages of the Columbia valley and the North Californian and Oregon coast (chinookan, Salish, Alsea, Coos, Athapascan, Yurok) on the one hand, and the relatively euphonious languages of the Sacramento valley (maidu, Yana, Wintun) on the other, inclining rather to the latter than to the former. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genetic Relationship of the North American Indian Languages If all these groupings were to be accepted the linguistic stocks in North America north of the Rio Grande would be practically reduced to Athapaskan, Hokan, Penutian, Kwakiutl - Salish, kutenai-algonkin, shoshonean-tanoan, iroquoian-caddoan, siouan-muskhogean, Lutu amian, Sahaptin, Zunian, and Keresan. The postulation of the genetic relationship of all the languages of North America contained in the following paper will then, considering these previous tentative conclusions, hardly seem so revolutionary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of American Aboriginal Languages Ethnologists now understand how to appreciate the high importance of language as one of the most interesting links of the great chain of national affinities and the reciprocity exist ing between man, the soil he lives upon, and the language he speaks, will become better understood the more our knowledge of these interesting topics is extended. Comparative philology has begun to be established upon solid scientific foundations; and the recent endeavours to establish finally a uniform system of linguistic orthography will, when generally received, give a new and important impetus to that study, which must lead to most interesting results. In such a state of progress, new literary guides are constantly required; and one of them, embracing the aboriginal languages of our great western continent, is hereby offered to those who take an interest in American linguistics. From the discovery of our continent, the languages of the American Indians have always been, as they are still, an object of high interest to missionary labour; and wherever the atten tion of the scientific world has been drawn to them, it was by the results of the exertions of these men, who, inspired by religious ardour, went out to teach the heathens, and, in their zeal for Christianity, soon learned to master the diversity of tongues. American Indians This word appears curiously disguised in Lescarbot's His totre cle la Nouv. France (ed. 1612, p. The Souriqueis (micmacs), he says, call the devil by the name aoutem; and their soothsayers and diviners, aoutmoins. Membertou, a Souriquois sachem, himself one of these aoutmoins. Used to wear about his neck the badge of his profession, a three cornered purse, covered with embroidery, in which he kept I know not what, of the size of a walnut, which he said was his demon, called Aoutem. Father Biard, in the Relation of 1611, mentioned these autmoins of i'acadie, qui sont commes lcurs prestres. With the prenominal prefix, wut, Miem. Oot, aoutem becomes ootaoutem, and autmoin is ootaoutmoin, the Mass. Wuto/ttimoin. What Lescarbot mistook for Membcrtou's demon was doubtless his totem and great medicine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native American languages are spoken from Siberia to Greenland, and from the Arctic to Tierra del Fuego; they include the southernmost language of the world (Yaghan) and some of the northernmost (Eskimoan). Campbell's project is to take stock of what is currently known about the history of Native American languages and in the process examine the state of American Indian historical linguistics, and the success and failure of its various methodologies. There is remarkably little consensus in the field, largely due to the 1987 publication of Language in the Americas by Joseph Greenberg. He claimed to trace a historical relation between all American Indian languages of North and South America, implying that most of the Western Hemisphere was settled by a single wave of immigration from Asia. This has caused intense controversy and Campbell, as a leading scholar in the field, intends this volume to be, in part, a response to Greenberg. Finally, Campbell demonstrates that the historical study of Native American languages has always relied on up-to-date methodology and theoretical assumptions and did not, as is often believed, lag behind the European historical linguistic tradition.
