With the conviction, elementary in every mind, that there can be no effect without a cause; with the consciousness of his own inexplicable being; creation, in its original brightness, bursting at once upon his view, and indicating itself through all his senses; he must have felt that mystery enveloped himself and all that he beheld. Accordingly, "As new waked from soundest sleep," said he, "Soft on the flowery bank I found me laid, Straight toward heaven my wandering eyes I turned, And gazed awhile the ample sky. Thou sun, said I, fair light, And thou enlightened earth, so fresh and gray, And ye that live and move, fair creatures, tell, Tell, if ye saw, how came I thus, how here." That was a sublime moment - such an one as none of his descendants, under the deadening influence of the familiarity attendant on gradual perception, can ever enjoy. This book was released on 2017-01-07 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 4 of 5 Thiers's History, in ten volumes foolscap-octavo, contains, if we remember rightly, one reference; and that to a book, not to the page or chapter of a book. It has, for these last seven or eight years, a wide or even high reputation; which latter it is as far as possible from meriting. A superficial air of order, of clearness, calm candour, is spread over the work; but inwardly, it is waste, inorganic; no human head that honestly tries can conceive the French Revolution 90. A critic of our acquaintance undertook, by way of bet, to find four errors per hour in Thiers: he won amply on the first trial or two.1 And yet readers (we must add), taking all this along with them, may peruse Thiers with comfort in certain circumstances, nay, even with profit; for he is a brisk man of his sort; and does tell you much, if you knew nothing. The libellers of the Church's moral rectitude are not the learned, and the sincere, nor the clearminded, but the shallow and ignorant, the malignant, and they who invert the quality of charity that thinketh no evil and rejoiceth not in iniquity. There is no more practical proof of fond ness for anything than being willing to pay for it, and it is to hear of iniquity that they pay who go re joicingly to the regale on the experiences of es caped monks and escaped nuns. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Philip Lindsley, D.D, Vol. 3: Miscellaneous Discourses and Essays N 0 full and connected biography of Dr. Lindsley has been at tempted in these volumes. The life of a student and man of letters is, for the most part, an uneventful one - at least uneventful as to single outward acts of public and general interest. In the present instance it has been thought that the best memoir, as well as the most lasting monument of the author, is to be found in his writings - not in What others may say of him, now that he is gone, but in what his own living pen had left on record. The words of such a man are his deeds, and when these are fully laid before the reader, but little remains to the biographer. Under this impression, all that has been aimed at in these introductory notices has been to present a fair esti mate of his labours and influence in those fields to which his energies were devoted, and to furnish only so much, in the way of fact and incident, as might be needful to a right appreciation both of his writ ings and his character. His version is not, indeed, very easy or elegant but it is entitled to the praise of clearness and fidelity. His notes abound with interesting quotations, and have the rare merit Of really elucidating the text. The preface is evidently the work Of a sensible and candid man, firm in his own religious Opinions, and tolerant towards those Of others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays The day dreams on the subject of religious conversions, which they who list may hear on every side, are, like other dreams, the types of substantial realities. Though the workings of the Almighty hand are distinctly visible only to the omniscient eye, yet even our narrow faculties can often trace the movements of that perennial under-current which controls the sequences of human life, and imparts to them the character of moral discipline. In the compre hensive scheme of the Supreme Governor of the world for the progressive advancement of the human race, are com prised innumerable subordinate plans for the improvement of the individuals of which it is composed; and whether we conceive of these as the result of some preordained system, or as produced by the immediate interposition of God, we equally acknowledge the doctrine of Divine Providence, and refer to him as the author of those salutary revolutions of human character, of which the reality is beyond dispute. It is a simple matter of fact, of which these volumes afford the most conclusive proof, that, about the twenty-sixth year of his age, Mr. Wilberforce was the subject of such a change; and that it continued for half a century to give an altered direction to his whole system of thought and ac tion. Waiving all discussion as to the mode in which the divine agency may have been employed to accomplish this result, it is more to our purpose to inquire in what the change really consisted, and what were the consequences for which it prepared the way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Discourses: With a Biographical Sketch a Portrait This is the first attempt to present to the public a comprehensive collection of the Essays and Discourses of Dr. P. C. Ray, the well known Indian chemist. Dr. Ray's discourses on Scientific topics and his researches in the field of Hindu Chemistry would by themselves form no negligible material for a volume of this kind. But his interests have by no means been confined to Hindu Chemistry alone. Education, social reform, industry, politics, indeed every aspect of India's material and moral progress has claimed his earnest attention and the papers collected in this volume testify to his manysided interests. Thus his statements before the Public Services and the Industrial Commissions, are full of practical suggestions for the advancement of Indian education and industries. His paper on "the Bengali Brain and and its misuse" and his address to the Indian National Social Conference at Calcutta which contain some; trenchant criticisms of the Hindu Social polity evince his deep interest in subjects relating to social reform. His handsome tributes to the services of eminent patriots like Ananda Mohan Bose and Dadabhai Naoroji and his generous appreciation of the life and life work of Sir William Wedderburn testify to the silent interest he has all along been taking in he political advancement of this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Lectures, Addresses, Sermons, and Miscellaneous and Descriptive Pieces: Including a Discussion on Education OF the fact that of making many books there is no end we are fully conscious. Neither do we fondly seek to persuade ourselves that the present production is just the desideratum to fill a long felt want. Honored usage has prescribed that a book-maker furnish some apology for the innocuous vanity of appearing in print. When the enraptured eye of Dickens first rested on his fascinating effusions arrayed in the decoration of type, he attempted the novel performance of reading them, while standing upon his head; which freak Edmund Burke would doubtless define as an effort to live in an inverted order. We shall, probably, never be the sport of such strange ups and downs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This lecture and a fragment of an edition of inonius Marcellus were the only unpublished materials left by Mr. Nettleship in a state ready to be printed as his work. The lecture on Madvig is accordingly printed below: the critical notes on Nonius will appear in the journal of Philology. In editing the papers I have verified all references and quota tions, added a few references and half a dozen notes in square brackets: further changes were obviously out of place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Vol. 3: Political, Historical, and Miscellaneous Chateaubriand is universally allowed by the French, of all parties, to be their first writer. His merits, however, are but little understood in this country. He is known as once a minister of Louis XVIII., and ambassador of that monarch in London; as the writer of many celebrated political pamphlets; and the victim, since the Revolution of 1830, of his noble and ill-requited devotion to the unfortunate family. Few are aware that he is, without one single exception, the most eloquent writer of the present age; that, independent of politics, he has produced many works on morals, religion, and history, destined for lasting endurance; that his writings combine the strongest love of rational freedom with the warmest inspiration of Christian devotion; that he is, as it were, the link between the feudal and the revolutionary ages - retaining from the former its generous and elevated feeling, and inhaling from the latter its acute and fearless investigation. The last pilgrim, with devout feelings, to the Holy Sepulchre, he was the first supporter of constitutional freedom in France; discarding thus from former times their bigoted fury, and from modern, their infidel spirit; blending all that was noble in the ardour of the Crusades, with all that is generous in the enthusiasm of freedom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature in Disease: To Which Are Added Miscellaneous Writings, Chiefly on Medical Subjects; Illustrated in Various Discourses and Essays The exclusive pursuit of any profession frequently tends to an undue exaggeration of its powers. What we have been early taught to accept on authority, and what we have been accustomed habitually to announce to others, may be come engrafted on our own belief, so as to constitute an unquestioned rule of practice. The necessity is, on this account, more imperative, that inquirers for truth should divest themselves of personal considerations, and seek for rules of practice which are based on enlightened experience, and impartial and reliable evidence.
