Book Synopsis Contagion of Violence by : National Research Council

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 25 years have seen a major paradigm shift in the field of violence prevention, from the assumption that violence is inevitable to the recognition that violence is preventable. Part of this shift has occurred in thinking about why violence occurs, and where intervention points might lie. In exploring the occurrence of violence, researchers have recognized the tendency for violent acts to cluster, to spread from place to place, and to mutate from one type to another. Furthermore, violent acts are often preceded or followed by other violent acts. In the field of public health, such a process has also been seen in the infectious disease model, in which an agent or vector initiates a specific biological pathway leading to symptoms of disease and infectivity. The agent transmits from individual to individual, and levels of the disease in the population above the baseline constitute an epidemic. Although violence does not have a readily observable biological agent as an initiator, it can follow similar epidemiological pathways. On April 30-May 1, 2012, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Forum on Global Violence Prevention convened a workshop to explore the contagious nature of violence. Part of the Forum's mandate is to engage in multisectoral, multidirectional dialogue that explores crosscutting, evidence-based approaches to violence prevention, and the Forum has convened four workshops to this point exploring various elements of violence prevention. The workshops are designed to examine such approaches from multiple perspectives and at multiple levels of society. In particular, the workshop on the contagion of violence focused on exploring the epidemiology of the contagion, describing possible processes and mechanisms by which violence is transmitted, examining how contextual factors mitigate or exacerbate the issue. Contagion of Violence: Workshop Summary covers the major topics that arose during the 2-day workshop. It is organized by important elements of the infectious disease model so as to present the contagion of violence in a larger context and in a more compelling and comprehensive way.

Book excerpt: Zhao Jinglun, a native of China who spent a third of his life in the United States, leads you on a fascinating journey focusing on Sino-U.S. relations and other world issues. Whether its Barack Obamas bid to gain more leverage in the Asia-Pacific region, the disturbing beginnings of a surveillance state, or the drone war being waged by the United States on multiple fronts, he tackles the issues that other commentators shy away from and poses solutions to bolster relations and resolve conflicts. He also exposes the true nature of Shinzo Abes right-wing Japanese government, its brazen denial of Japans war crimes, and its undisguised plan to revive Japanese militarism. Youll also learn about other major world issues, including the civil war in Syria, the military coup in Egypt, Mali and the fight for Africa, and other conflicts that will shape the future of the world we live in. His views often differ sharply from those promoted by his home country or leaders in the United States, but he offers keen insights on finding common ground by learning from the past and looking into The World Mirror.

Book Synopsis Mirrors and Mirroring from Antiquity to the Early Modern Period by : Maria Gerolemou
Download or read book Mirrors and Mirroring from Antiquity to the Early Modern Period written by Maria Gerolemou and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-09 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines mirrors and mirroring through a series of multidisciplinary essays, especially focusing on the intersection between technological and cultural dynamics of mirrors. The international scholars brought together here explore critical questions around the mirror as artefact and the phenomenon of mirroring. Beside the common visual registration of an action or inaction, in a two dimensional and reversed form, various types of mirrors often possess special abilities which can produce a distorted picture of reality, serving in this way illusion and falsehood. Part I looks at a selection of theory from ancient writers, demonstrating the concern to explore these same questions in antiquity. Part II considers the role reflections can play in forming ideas of gender and identity. Beyond the everyday, we see in Part III how oracular mirrors and magical mirrors reveal the invisible divine – prosthetics that allow us to look where the eye cannot reach. Finally, Part IV considers mirrors' roles in displaying the visible and invisible in antiquity and since.

Book Synopsis The Body as a Mirror of the Soul by : Lisa Devriese
Download or read book The Body as a Mirror of the Soul written by Lisa Devriese and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiognomy, the history of racial classifications, and the interplay between natural philosophy, medicine, and ethics The idea of the body as a mirror of the soul has fascinated mankind throughout history. Being able to see through an individual, and drawing conclusions on their character solely based on a selection of external features, is the subject of physiognomy, and has a long tradition running well into recent times. However, the pre-modern, especially medieval background of this discipline has remained underexplored. The selected case studies in this volume each contribute to a better understanding of the history of physiognomy from antiquity to the Renaissance, and offer discussions on unedited treatises and on the application, development, and reception of this field of knowledge, as well as on visual sources inspired by physiognomic theory. Book Synopsis The Body in the Mirror by : Angela Dalle Vacche
Download or read book The Body in the Mirror written by Angela Dalle Vacche and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rich, wide-ranging book explores Italy's national film style by relating it closely to politics and to the historicist thought of Croce, Gentile, and Gramsci. Here is a new kind of film history--a nonlinear, intertextual approach that confronts the total story of the growth of a national cinema while challenging the traditional formats of general histories and period studies. Examining Italian silent films of the fascist era through neorealism to modernist filmmaking after May 1968, Angela Dalle Vacche reveals opera and the commedia dell'arte to be the strongest influences. As she presents the whole history of Italian cinema from the standpoint of a dialectic between these two styles, she offers brilliant interpretations of individual films. The "body in the mirror" is the national self-image on the screen, which changes shape in response to historical and political context. To discover how the nation represents, understands, and recognizes this fictional "body," Dalle Vacche discusses changes in the strongest parameters of Italian cinema: allegory, spectacle, body, history, unity, and continuity. In her hands these concepts yield a wealth of insights for film scholars, art historians, political scientists, and those concerned with cultural studies in general, as well as for other educated readers interested in Italian cinema. Download or read book The Mirror of Socrates written by Tibor Schatteles and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a testimony to his love of reading and the goal of sharing it with others, author Tibor Schatteles presents a collection of twelve essays that study a wide range of works of literature, including works of Philostratos of Lemnos, Sophocles, Cervantes (Don Quixote), Gogol, Chekhov, Balzac (Gobseck), Hermann Broch, Robert Musil, James Joyce, Franz Kafka, Marcel Proust and Aristotle's Poetics. In these essays, he presents the simple exercises of a reader reaching out to communicate with other readers, building on notes he made during first readings and gathered following his retirement from the Canadian Federal Civil Service. Taking a cue from Montaigne's essay on reading books, he asks nothing of his books but "the pleasure of an honest entertainment" and yet he also seeks to share his ideas with others and engage in discussion and analysis. In The Mirror of Socrates, Schatteles examines the seminal works of literature in scholarly details, sharing his thoughts, ideas, and interpretations of each author's writing and purpose.
