Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first clinical reference text on Mirena(TM) - the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (IUS) that has achieved great success in the UK and Scandinavia since its first commercial release in Finland in 1990. Considered to be a new paradigm in contraception, Mirena(TM) offers very high and comfortable contraceptive efficacy with reduced menstrual pain and blood loss and minimal side effects. Mirena(TM) is said to offer an excellent contraceptive choice for modern women, fitting in well with an active professional life, free choice of sport activities, and a spontaneous sex life. The book contains five authoritatively written chapters on 21st century contraception, effects of the levonorgestrel intrauterine system on the endometrium, menstrual bleeding pattern, perimenopausal contraception, and the safety profile of Mirena(TM) based on long-term experience. Includes bibliographic references and index. Publication Note: This volume is the proceedings of a symposium held at the XV FIGO World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Copenhagen, August, 1997.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OBJECTIVE: To determine the safety, effectiveness, and impact on glycemic control of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device (LNG-IUD) among women with type II diabetes. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective chart review of women diagnosed with type II diabetes who had an LNG-IUD placed within the University of Washington Medical Center system between 2007 and 2012. We abstracted and analyzed the patient demographics, indications for placement, complications, and changes in glycemic control as measured by hemoglobin A1c before and after placement. RESULTS: We identified 115 women under the age of 55 with type II diabetes who had an LNG-IUD placed during the study period. The mean age was 37.2 years and the mean weight was 252.2 pounds. Fifty-seven percent were using the LNG-IUD primarily for contraception, while 30.4% were using it primarily to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. There were no documented pregnancies with the LNG-IUD in place. Expulsions were noted in 3.5% of women. Adverse effects included abdominal or pelvic pain in 13.9%, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in 1.7% of women during the study period. Thirty-nine patients had A1c data before and up to 2 years after placement, and there was no significant change in A1c (mean A1c decrease of 0.17, CI -0.76 to +0.43). CONCLUSION: The LNG-IUD appears to be safe and effective in women with type II diabetes, with few complications and no significant effect on glycemic control.

Book excerpt: "This book sets out how the concept of ambulatory gynaecology can be applied to the main areas of gynaecological practice. It describes how national guidelines can be integrated into modern gynaecological practice in the context of the Government's National Health Service (NHS) plan and provides an essential guide to all practising clinicians." "A change from traditional care pathways to more cost effective, patient-centred approaches to medical practice lies at the heart of modern health service management. A 'see and treat' management philosophy is growing. 'One stop' clinics and 'day surgery' operations are replacing traditional outpatient consultations and inpatient surgery and the term 'ambulatory gynaecology' is being adopted to describe this philosophy."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty-five percent of adolescents ages 15-19 have had sexual intercourse. By age 19, 75% of all adolescents have had sexual intercourse. Most adolescents select condoms as their most reliable method of contraception. The United States continues to rank among the highest of all similarly developed countries in rates of adolescent pregnancy, and the unintended pregnancy rate is highest among women ages 20-24. The reasons for these public health statistics are myriad, but a major issue is that adolescents and young women use contraception inconsistently. Thus, there is a need for youth to learn about and use contraception consistently and effectively. Unfortunately, misinformation abounds, even among practicing clinicians. Young people need a clinician who is up to date on clinical recommendations regarding contraceptive care. The busy clinician needs information at his or her fingertips, needs to know how to create a teen-friendly environment and must exhibit best contraceptive counseling practices. Gynecologists and primary care practitioners (as well as family physicians, adolescent medicine physicians and pediatricians) are on the front lines when it comes to discussing, recommending and prescribing contraceptive options to adolescent and young women. This book is a valuable resource for these clinicians; it is the only handbook on the market on contraception for the adolescent and young adult women and it is filled with evidence-based information in an easy to read and easy to digest format. Now is an optimal time for a book of this sort. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just completed a clinical guideline for contraceptive care based on the World Health Organization’s Medical Eligibility Criteria (MEC). The United States MEC seeks to demystify contraceptive care for all women. It also lays the groundwork for helping providers improve clinical practice in contraceptive care. Contraception for Adolescent and Young Adult Women will complement these efforts in a manner tailored to the unique needs of this population.
