Book excerpt: The Deoband movement—a revivalist movement within Sunni Islam that quickly spread from colonial India to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and even the United Kingdom and South Africa—has been poorly understood and sometimes feared. Despite being one of the most influential Muslim revivalist movements of the last two centuries, Deoband’s connections to the Taliban have dominated the attention it has received from scholars and policy-makers alike. Revival from Below offers an important corrective, reorienting our understanding of Deoband around its global reach, which has profoundly shaped the movement’s history. In particular, the author tracks the origins of Deoband’s controversial critique of Sufism, how this critique travelled through Deobandi networks to South Africa, as well as the movement’s efforts to keep traditionally educated Islamic scholars (`ulama) at the center of Muslim public life. The result is a nuanced account of this global religious network that argues we cannot fully understand Deoband without understanding the complex modalities through which it spread beyond South Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this pioneering project, Margrit Pernau brings the ‘history of emotions’ approach to South Asian studies. A theoretically sophisticated and erudite investigation, Emotions and Modernity in Colonial India maps the history of emotions in India between the uprising of 1857 and World War I. Situating the prevalent experiences, interpretations, and practices of emotions of the time within the context of the major political events of colonial India, Pernau goes beyond the dominant narrative of colonial modernity and its fixation with discipline and restrain, and traces the contemporary transformation from a balance in emotions to the resurgence of fervor. The current volume is based on a large archive of sources in Urdu, many being explored for the first time. Pernau grounds her work on such diverse sources as philosophical and theological treatises on questions of morality, advice literature, journals and newspapers, nostalgic descriptions of courtly culture, and even children’s literature. This close look into individual experiences, practices, and interpretations reveals the myriad emotions of the day, and the importance of these micro-histories in presenting an alternative account of colonial India.

Book excerpt: In many parts of Africa three different systems of laws are concurrently applied – the imported "Colonial" law, the indigenous customary law and Islamic law. In some countries the customary and the Islamic law are kept separate and distinct, while in others they are fused into a single system. This volume represents a unique survey of the extent to which Islamic law is in fact applied in those parts of East and West Africa which were at one time under British administration. It examines the relevant legislation and case law, much of which has never appeared in any Law Reports; the judges and courts which apply it and the problems to which its application give rise.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the effects of the 1999 Tanzanian land legislation on customary land tenure, particularly that of pastoralists. It is an original, empirical and theoretical critical study of the laws and their implementation in securing land tenure of customary landholders in the face of the changing social-political structures, and as such constitutes a contribution to the current debate about the future of customary landholders in the reformed Tanzanian economy. Among issues that receive particular attention in this study are: the development of pastoral land tenure, the main features of the new land laws, introduced land schemes for pastoralists, land dispute mechanisms, the certification of village lands, investments on village land, the inclusion of unused or unoccupied village lands into the category of general land, women's land rights and villager participation in the administration and management of village lands.

Book excerpt: Among traditionally educated scholars in the Islamic world there is much disagreement on the crises that afflict modern Muslim societies and how best to deal with them, and the debates have grown more urgent since 9/11. Through an analysis of the work of Muhammad Rashid Rida and Yusuf al-Qaradawi in the Arab Middle East and a number of scholars belonging to the Deobandi orientation in colonial and contemporary South Asia, this book examines some of the most important issues facing the Muslim world since the late nineteenth century. These include the challenges to the binding claims of a long-established scholarly consensus, evolving conceptions of the common good, and discourses on religious education, the legal rights of women, social and economic justice and violence and terrorism. This wide-ranging study by a leading scholar provides the depth and the comparative perspective necessary for an understanding of the ferment that characterizes contemporary Islam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes socio-religious transformation in Tanzania. Some scholars claim that religion has returned to the public domain since the collapse of Tanzanian socialism, and that there is a tension between Muslims and Christians. Based on focus group discussions in Dar es Salaam, author Thomas Joseph Ndaluka acquires insight into Muslim - Christian relations using Critical Discourse Analysis. He analyzes how Muslims and Christians identify and position themselves in relation to each other and the conditions which make them elevate their religious identity over other identities. Ndaluka reveals that some periphreal voices threaten social cohesion, but, in general, Muslims and Christians maintain friendly relations and avoid conflict. He also shows individualization or de-institutionalization as dominant trends in the country. However, educational institutions have remained strong and influence other institutions, such as the family. (Series: Interreligious Studies - Vol. 5)

Book excerpt: Regina Jackson, attractive single mom and rising curator of a newly formed arts foundation is in love with her boss, Dr. Dennis Dickerson. Dennis is elusive, at best, and totally by accident, Regina finds herself in a relationship with an incarcerated man, Ray Boden. Dennis makes trips to the prison, seemingly on business, but Regina later finds out that he is dealing drugs in the prison and is in way over his head. Ray is trying to stop the drug trade in Cell block C, while Shaka – Ray’s arch enemy – is trying to get rich by selling cocaine to the other inmates. Ray tries to solicit Regina’s help and they fall in love. In the meantime, Dennis justifies his illegal actions. He is using the money to build his museum and a reputation for himself. On a trip to the prison, Shaka tries to kill him and steals his identity. Shaka succeeds in escaping and goes to the museum to score big money and kill the object of everyone’s affection – Regina. Dennis arrives just in time to save her. Shaka is apprehended and returned to prison. Regina realizes that she truly loves Dennis and her locked down relationship must end. However, her passion for Ray won’t die. Regina agrees to come to the prison to say goodbye. When she arrives, Ray has ‘disappeared’ but she discovers her long lost father who has been incarcerated for over 25 years. Throughout the novel, Regina meets nine women who are in locked down relationships. All of these women share their stories with her which effect the outcome of Regina’s love affair. She realizes that she, in many ways, has been locked down in love. It took the love of a convict to set her free.
