Book excerpt: The Dassault Mirage IIIO was the RAAF's first supersonic combat aircraft, and served as its front-line fighter for over 20 years. During that time, it wore a great many color schemes, official and unofficial, and was adorned with many unit and individual markings. For the first time, the evolution and details of all these color schemes and markings is described and illustrated. The colors of this elegant aircraft changed with its roles and the changes in official thinking with regard to camouflage; the infamous Aussie sense of humor added some striking and unusual markings to Mirages over the years too! The authors have researched this topic in great depth, helped by access to official and private photo collections and the memories of Mirage pilots and ground crew. The manufacturers, Dassault, have also helped with information and photos of the very first Australian Mirages. Many of these photos are being published for the very first time, and they provide a striking visual record of the many colors carried by this much-loved French Lady - "The old adage often spoken about many aircraft rings true for the Mirage, if it looks right, it probably is right. The Mirage, in my opinion, was, is, and forever will be the most beautiful aircraft ever flown" (Paul Mason).

Book excerpt: Israel Aircraft Industries manufactured 51 single and ten two-seater Mirage 5s, the IDFAF named them Nesher; after an outstanding performance in the Yom Kippur War, most were sold to Argentina in the late 70s. By the beginning of the decade, the Argentine Air Force was in the process of modernizing its fleet of combat aircraft. While that stage had begun some years earlier with the introduction of the first batch of Douglas A-4P Skyhawk, it began with the incorporation of the BAC Canberra (intended to replace veteran Avro Lincoln and Lancaster killed in 1967) bombers and the signing of the contract for the first supersonic jet FAA: the Mirage III.
Book Synopsis Aircraft of The Royal Australian Air Force by : Air Force History Branch
Download or read book Aircraft of The Royal Australian Air Force written by Air Force History Branch and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft of The Royal Australian Air Force tells the story of the RAAF’s first one hundred years by describing the acquisition, operation, and service record of the multitude of aircraft types flown by the RAAF. The 176 aircraft types include the flimsy wood and canvas aircraft typical of World War I, through the technological advances during and after World War II, to modern fifth-generation, complex aircraft like the F-35 Lightning II. Even before its formation Sir Richard Williams, the Father of the RAAF, had decided to employ an alpha-numeric numbering system to identify and account for each aircraft in service. This system started with A1, A2, A3 etc as each type of aircraft came into service. Each individual aircraft within each series was identified as A1-1, A1-2 and so on and the aircraft serial became known colloquially as the ‘A-number’. With some exceptions over the century since the A-number system started, aircraft entered RAAF service in broadly the sequence of the A-numbers, and so this book is intended to assist in charting the 100-year history of the RAAF by listing aircraft operated in A-number sequence, rather than by listing them by role (such as Fighter, Bomber, Maritime, Trainer, Transport etc) or alphabetically by name or by manufacturer. The inclusion of a comprehensive Index and the Quick Reference Guide to aircraft by role is intended to facilitate the location of the entry for any specific type of aircraft for those who may not already know its A-number. Aircraft of The Royal Australian Air Force is a must have for all those who have served in the RAAF, those with a passion for military aviation and aircraft in general, and the broader members of the public wishing to gain an appreciation of the Royal Australian Air Force in its centenary year.
Download or read book GAMD Mirage III written by Hervé Beaumont and published by Les Matériels de l'Armée de l'. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Text Designed in response to the official 1953 program planned to equip the Armée de l'Air with a light supersonic interceptor, the Mirage III is universally acknowledged as one of the most remarkable successes of the French post-war aircraft industry. This delta-winged fighter has a configuration which has since become the hallmark of the French aircraft builder, Dassault, and has rapidly demonstrated its qualities beyond its original frontiers, so much so that 1 400 examples of all variants came off the production lines, purchased by twenty or so countries. This very broad subject has been split into two distinct parts, the first volume dealing with the initial single-seat IIIC and two-seat IIIB versions equipped with the Atar 9B jet engine and the second deals with the improved versions of the fighter with a longer fuselage, powered by an Atar 9C and fitted with a more effective Doppler radar: the IIIE interceptor, the IIIR and RD reconnaissance versions, the 5 and 50 ground attack versions. In line with the name and aim of the collection only the planes used by the Armée de l'Air are described in these books.
Book Synopsis Israeli Mirage III and Nesher Aces by : Shlomo Aloni
Download or read book Israeli Mirage III and Nesher Aces written by Shlomo Aloni and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israeli delta fighters pilots have been credited with almost 300 kills between 1966 and 1974, and dozens of them became aces. The Israeli aerial kill exchange rate and overall air-to-air performance was phenomenal. Although the Israeli pilots were flying Mach 2 fighters, they lacked any modern radar equipment and their MiG-21 flying opponents should have had a performance edge over them. This book details their most signifcant engagements, many of which were essentially World War 2 style dogfights fought with jet aircraft. Because neither side had the combat edge to disengage at will most engagements were a life and death struggle and the introduction of air-to-air missiles and the Israeli Nesher was to prove decisive in this theatre.
