Book excerpt: Book 7 contrasts the stories of biblical characters who rebelled against God with those who trusted, believed, and had great faith. The first lesson is about Korah, a dissatisfied Levite, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron during the forty years the Israelites wandered in the wilderness. Korah thought he and his friends deserved better leaders. Rebellion is an ugly business, particularly when the adversary is the Lord God! The second lesson features another character with an evil disposition: Haman, Queen Esther's antagonist. Haman wanted to totally destroy the Jewish people. This story describes the origins of the Feast of Purim that celebrates the salvation of the Jews from the wicked Haman. The Gospel of John describes only eight miracles of Jesus and one of them is the healing of a blind man near the Pool of Siloam. Giving sight to the blind was to be a power possessed by the future Messiah and this miracle was additional proof that Jesus was the Messiah. The Pharisees, however, wanted to prove that the blind man was not really blind so that Jesus could be discredited and ultimately eliminated from public ministry. In Acts 9 we find another similar miracle when Aeneas was raised from the dead by Peter at Lydda, a small community 25 miles northwest of Jerusalem. Interestingly the text says nothing about Aeneas asking to be healed, the extent of his faith, or what he did after he was raised from the dead. But, "all the residents . . . saw him, and they turned to the Lord!"Shadrach, Meshack, and Abednigo demonstrated an amazing trust in God, and their journey through the fiery furnace provides us with an example of those who are totally committed to their God, no matter what the consequences. Where did the foundation of their complete trust and commitment come from? Faith and trust are not generated on their own. Trust is only possible as we know God, know His Word, and become convinced of His faithfulness.Alexander, the coppersmith, is another lesson about a rebellious character who created problems for Paul. He along with Hymenaeus, whom we studied in Book 2 of this series, were accused of blasphemy, and Paul said they were "handed over to Satan." In Paul's second letter to Timothy he warned Timothy about problems that would endanger the church and repeated his warning about Alexander who strongly opposed the Gospel.Next we investigate the circumstances around Paul commanding a spirit to come out of a slave girl who was telling fortunes for her owners. The owners were not very happy with Paul and Silas and caused them to be thrown into prison. We learn some very interesting things by examining what the demon spirit said and knew. Lastly, Paul healed a crippled man at Lystra and the local people thought Paul and Barnabas were Greek gods. The text says that the crippled man "had faith to be made well." What does that mean in the context of this story and our faith? The celebration of a healing didn't last long because some unhappy and unbelieving Jews created a firestorm of protest against Paul and Barnabas, and outsiders came from Antioch and Iconium, stoned Paul, and dragged him out of the city.

Maxwell Whyte all deal with the spiritual gift the apostle Paul calls “the working of miracles” (1 Corinthians 12:10). The Working of Miracles looks at the powerful and prophetic outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the believer's life. It unpacks the principals involved in the working of miracles and the explanation of what a miracle really is. The Prophetic Word reveals the amazing power of the Word of God when spoken through His anointed vessels. Pulling Down Strongholds calls the church to take its rightful place in God’s plan to throw off every form of bondage to Satan and to destroy his dominion on earth in these last days. Together, these three classic charismatic teachings will inspire readers to boldly pursue the prophetic spiritual gifts and to stand in the spiritual victory God has promised.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation An in-depth examination of the event that precipitated the complete domination of Restoration politics by the Royalists and ultimately convinced millions of French citizens to support Louis XVIII and the Bourbon monarchy. On 13 February 1820 the Duke of Berry, the only Bourbon prince capable of siring an heir, was assassinated. Seven months later the Duchess of Berry gave birth to a boy, the Duke of Bordeaux, and the Bourbon lineage was saved. The boy was immediately nicknamed "the miracle child." The Duke's assassination and the birth of his son gave rise to the Royalist Reaction of 1820, a ten-month period that forever altered France's political landscape. This remarkable story provides the backdrop for David Skuy's analysis of the Royalist Reaction and its place in the history of the French Restoration. Skuy argues that the Royalist Reaction was the product of two divergent forces: historical echoes of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire and the psychological consequences of the assassination, and the miracle child. Skuy discusses Restoration political theory and the development of modern political parties. He follows the strategems of anti-royalist extremists plotting to overthrow the Bourbon regime, and details the complexities and intrigues that characterized the royal court and parliament. Skuy reveals how the assassination and the birth of the miracle child triggered a popular Royalist Reaction that changed millions of French citizens from passive observers into ardent royalists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As capitalism defeated socialism in Eastern Europe, the market displaced the state in the developing world. In Beyond the Miracle of the Market, first published in 2005, Bates focuses on Kenya, a country that continued to grow while others declined in Africa, and mounts a prescient critique of the neo-classical turn in development economics. Attributing Kenya's exceptionalism to its economic institutions, this book pioneers the use of 'new institutionalism' in the field of development. In doing so, however, the author accuses the approach of being apolitical. Institutions introduce power into economic life. To account for their impact, economic analysis must therefore be complemented by political analysis; micro-economics must be imbedded in political science. In making this argument, Bates relates Kenya's subsequent economic decline to the change from the Kenyatta to the Moi regime and the subsequent use of the power of economic institutions to redistribute rather than to create wealth.

Book excerpt: A miracle is defined in the dictionary as an ‘extraordinary, supposedly supernatural event; remarkable happening.’ Throughout the Bible, we see God performing miracles or supernatural, remarkable happenings. Miracles show God’s willingness to intervene in human affairs when we call upon Him. They also undoubtedly display God’s limitless power, His tender mercies and His faithfulness in achieving miraculously what He has promised. In other words, there are attributes of God that we see in the miracles He performs. This insightful book is a collection of all the miracles in the Bible, both Old and New Testament miracles. I thought that if one were to read one miracle after another, this might boost one’s faith in God and give a better understanding of the different attributes of God. I believe that in every miracle, we see the love, care, willingness to help, and mighty power of God. There was a conscious decision not to create an unhealthy fascination with miracles, but to present the God behind the miracles. It is easier to trust someone when you know him. In the same way, I wanted the presentation of each miracle to present the love, care, goodness, and power of God. This way, readers would know God better and be able to trust Him for their personal struggles in which God is needed to intervene. I hope this book will let readers know God better.

Book excerpt: Bestselling author and radio host Michael Medved recounts some of the most significant events in America’s rise to prosperity and power, from the writing of the Constitution to the Civil War. He reveals a record of improbabilities and amazements that demonstrate what the Founders always believed: that events unfolded according to a master plan, with destiny playing an unmistakable role in lifting the nation to greatness. Among the stirring, illogical episodes described here: • A band of desperate religious refugees find themselves blown hopelessly off course, only to be deposited at the one spot on a wild continent best suited for their survival • George Washington’s beaten army, surrounded by a ruthless foe and on the verge of annihilation, manages an impossible escape due to a freakish change in the weather • A famous conqueror known for seizing territory, frustrated by a slave rebellion and a frozen harbor, impulsively hands Thomas Jefferson a tract of land that doubles the size of the United States • A weary soldier picks up three cigars left behind in an open field and notices the stogies have been wrapped in a handwritten description of the enemy’s secret battle plans—a revelation that gives Lincoln the supernatural sign he’s awaited in order to free the slaves When millions worry over the nation losing its way, Medved’s sweeping narrative, bursting with dramatic events and lively portraits of unforgettable, occasionally little-known characters, affirms America as “fortune’s favorite,” shaped by a distinctive destiny from our beginnings to the present day.

Book excerpt: The Kwangju Uprising that occurred in May 1980 is burned into the minds of South Koreans in much the same way that Tiananmen is burned into the minds of contemporary Chinese. As the world watched in horror following the assassination of President Park Chung Hee, student protesters were brutally suppressed by the military and police led by strongman Chun Doo Hwan. Kim Dae Jung, the current president of South Korea, was imprisoned and sentenced to death during this period. This book recreates those earth-shaking events through eyewitness reports of leading Western correspondents on the scene as well as Korean participants and observers. Photographs, detailed street maps, and dramatic woodblock prints further illuminate the day-to-day drama to keep this atrocity alive in the conscience of the world.
