Heavy construction was done by contractors who won bids for the different projects along various sections of the parkway. Construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway began in September 1935 at Cumberland Knob. Civilian Conservation Corps troops took care of the roadsides, landscaping, and structure building. As part of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, this project was intended to provide jobs throughout the region. As Mari the caterpillar is born, she is surrounded by beautiful monarch butterflies that gracefully soar around the orange blossoms. Mari can hardly wait until she grows big enough to have wings to fly! It is not long before Mari grows large and gets very tired. She spins a chrysalis and slips inside, falling into a deep sleep as her body begins to change. As soon as she awakens, Mari unfolds her orange and black wings, dries them in the sun, and begins flying from flower to flower. Soon, it is time for her to catch a current and embark on a magnificent migration that will take her more than two thousand miles over New York City to the hills of West Virginia and finally to a mountain in Mexico where the circle of life begins once again. Written in both Spanish and English, Maris Miracle tells the delightful, educational, and touching tale of a migrating monarch butterflys adventures, seeking to encourage learning and good stewardship of our planet.

Book excerpt: "I, too, was a victim of abuse. I thought I had to endure the suffering. Bless your good works and your caring heart." Francine, internationally acclaimed poet (http: //poetry-emotion.com) "This isn't the same ol'-same ol' story of a woman raised with incest in her background and an alcoholic parent to contend with. It's the story of a woman born into a loving family who suffered at the hands of a man who lured into his web, then spent the next thirty years of their life attempting to destroy her. He only made her stronger. It's the story of our culture, with a rich texture of the 40s, 50s and 60s woven into the fabric of the author's astounding words. Spellbinding, with a hint of John Steinbeck on every page." Marjorie Cox, public speaker "I live every day of my life grateful to have survived what so many young women haven't survived. Maybe I had to tough it out in order to pass along some of my history to those who feel that they, and they alone, are in such abusive situations that no one will ever understand. My message to them is to believe in miracles. And to believe in yourself. With God, all things are possible. I'm living proof of the truth of that statement." Evelyn Fort Stewart

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Sloop and her husband began their lifelong dedication to the mountain people when they rode horseback into the remote hill region of North Carolina in 1909. The conditions they encountered were shockingly primitive. The people had neither doctors, nor schools and were suspicious of medicine and "larnin’." Electricity and running water were unheard of, roads were rough mountain paths and the diet consisted of "hog meat, greens and grease." The main industry was moon shining. Dr. Sloop declared a personal war on moonshiners, tracking down hidden still with a reluctant sheriff in tow. She fought against child marriages and in a region where girls often married at the age of fourteen. With the help of the mountain people, she reinvigorated the weaving trade, built a church and a modern well equipped hospital. Her spirited support of education resulted in a modern twenty-five-building school. An amazing story of a unique crusade in the hill country of North Carolina.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking an approach different from (hat of earlier biographers, A. Owen Aldridge examines Voltaire's literary and intellectual career chronologically, using the methods both of comparative literature and of the history of ideas. The resulting biography portrays a fascinating personality as well as a great writer and thinker. Voltaire is revealed not only through his correspondence, here extensively quoted, but through the statements others made about him in anecdotes, memoirs, and other contemporary documents. New information is introduced regarding Voltaire's sojourn in England, his later relations with English men of letters, his domestic turmoils at the court of Frederick the Great, and his contact with French contemporaries such as Montesquieu and Diderot. For the first time in any biography, attention is given to Voltaire's extensive knowledge of Spanish literature and its influence on his own work, particularly Candide. Voltaire is portrayed as a conscious participant in the Enlightenment. In his early years he was interested primarily in aesthetics and abstract philosophy; later, he passionately dedicated himself to humanitarian causes with ideological implications. Professor Aldridge brings forward evidence pointing to the contrast between these two periods in Voltaire's life. Originally published in 1975. Book excerpt: Herbert Carter's 'The Boy Scouts in the Blue Ridge; Or, Marooned Among the Moonshiners' is a captivating adventure novel set against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The book follows a group of Boy Scouts who find themselves in a dangerous situation when they become isolated among moonshiners. Carter's writing style is engaging and detailed, immersing the reader in the thrilling escapades of the young protagonists. The novel is a blend of action, suspense, and moral lessons, making it an engaging read for both young adults and older readers interested in the Boy Scouts movement of the early 20th century. Herbert Carter, an author active during the early 1900s, was likely inspired to write this book by his own experiences or a fascination with outdoor adventures and scouting. His knowledge of the Boy Scouts movement and his storytelling skills shine through in 'The Boy Scouts in the Blue Ridge,' cementing his place as a notable author of juvenile fiction during his time. I highly recommend 'The Boy Scouts in the Blue Ridge; Or, Marooned Among the Moonshiners' to readers looking for an exciting adventure novel with moral values and a historical touch. Carter's vivid descriptions and character development make this book a timeless classic in the world of juvenile literature.

Book excerpt: Most of us can probably think of a spiritual experience in our life that made a permanent profound impression. God reveals His infinite love through our personal experiences. Too often these stories of spiritual reality are never shared with others. When I began praying for spiritual experiences when my parents were very ill, I was blessed with a visit from crying angels. The first story in my book, "Crying Angels," inspired the title of my book. I felt I should record and share my spiritual stories and the stories I had heard from others. I realized that both the teller and the listener's faith in God increases when stories are shared. Our sharing creates a ripple effect of numerous blessings. My hope is that the stories in this book will bless your soul and will help you not miss any of the miracles God places before you. Sarah V. Tinsley

Book excerpt: "This first of two volumes on North Carolina women chronicles the influence and accomplishments of individual women from the pre-Revolutionary period through the early 20th century. They represent a range of social and economic backgrounds, political stances, areas of influence, and geographical regions within the state. Even though North Carolina remained mostly rural until well into the twentieth century and the lives of most women centered on farm, family, and church, Gillespie and McMillen note that the state's people "exhibited a progressive streak that positively influenced women." Public funds were set aside to advance statewide education, private efforts after the Civil War led to the founding of numerous black schools and colleges, and in 1891 the General Assembly chartered the State Normal and Industrial School (later UNC-G) as one of the first publicly funded colleges for white women. By the late 19th century, as several essays in this volume reveal, education played a pivotal role in the lives of many white and black women. It inspired their activism and involvement in a world beyond their traditional domestic sphere"--
