Book excerpt: The Thomas Ward is like a small stream in the mountains, that emerges from a tiny spring and trickles on down the hillside to join the creek on its way to the river. No attempt has been made to get all the information, about all the people who live, or have lived, within its boundaries. Neither is the material collected, considered to be the most important or free from errors. This book is just "a cup of water" dipped from the little stream, as it journeys on its way, no attempt is made to dip up all the water or stop its flow. It is hoped, that like the cup of cool water from the tiny stream, this book will refresh the reader, and the stream of time flows on. To those pioneers, both young and old who had the courage to combine all the natural resources which the creator so wisely stored in these mountains, rivers and valleys along with the brawn and brain that He gave man. The Miracle of the Desert came to be.

Book excerpt: German Jews and Migration to the United States, 1933–1945 is a collection of first-person accounts, many previously unpublished, that document the flight and exile of German Jews from Nazi Germany to the USA,. The authors of the letters and memoirs included in this collection share two important characteristics: They all had close ties to Munich, the Bavarian capital, and they all emigrated to the USA, though sometimes via detours and/or after stays of varying lengths in other places of refuge. Selected to represent a wide range of exile experiences, these testimonies are carefully edited, extensively annotated, and accompanied by biographical introductions to make them accessible to readers, especially those who are new to the subject. These autobiographical sources reveal the often-traumatic experiences and consequences of forced migration, displacement, resettlement, and new beginnings. In addition, this book demonstrates that migration is not only a process by which groups and individuals relocate from one place to another but also a dynamic of transmigration affected by migrant networks and the complex relationships between national policies and the agency of migrants.

Book excerpt: Surviving the might of the Luftwaffes attacks on Hawkers aerodrome and the doodlebug flying bombs, the Langley Boy is an eyewitness account of a working class boy, growing up in the rural village of Langley, Buckinghamshire, during the period of wartime austerity and rationing until the more prosperous Rock n Roll years. It is a boys own story of gang warfare, trolley racing and escapades in an adventure playground of a rubbish dump, a surplus army vehicle compound, the Grand Union canal, a gravel pit, cherry orchards and open meadowland. On a more sombre note, it deals with the tug-of-war relationship with his parents, their jealousies, harshness, love and affection. It provides a perspective on the strict teaching regimes at Langley primary and junior schools and the overpowering influence of the dreaded 11+ examination. It describes family weddings with aunts dressed in flamboyant hats, and annual family holidays on the beach at Jaywick Sands and Llandudno. It recalls the memorable Saturday morning trips to the Granada cinema to see Roy Rogers, Laurel and Hardy and the delights of boys comics, and it relives the thrills and spills at Pelhams fair and Langley fete, festive bonfire night celebrations, the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth the 2nd and the advent of television. The painful voyage from boyhood to manhood takes place at Slough Grammar School for Boys, marked by the struggle to master the sciences with ultimate academic and sporting success in the sixth form. It covers the social impact of the Teddy boy era, the influence of the church, the advent of pop music with Bill Haley and Lonnie Donegan and life behind the bar at the North Star public house in Slough. In short, the book is about a boys determination to escape from his roots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is the journey babies have made over the past century. The rise of the middle class in America dictated major changes in the ways babies were fed, cared for, and raised. Social programs focused on improving water and sanitation programs for all, which led directly to decreased infection among infants and improved morbidity and mortality rates. Other programs also focused attention on babies. Advances in medicine allowed infants to be immunized against once-deadly and disabling diseases and to survive congenital defects, premature birth, and infectious disease. Physicians helped infertile couples conceive and carry a baby to term. Prenatal care helped mothers give birth to a healthy baby. Early intervention services gave infants an advantage as they faced growing up in the modern era. Today, most American babies are better off than they were in 1901. Overall they are bigger, healthier, and much more likely to survive the first year. But challenges remain. By reviewing the events of the past century, Reedy hopes we can make even more of a difference in the lives of American babies in the century to come. In 1900, most babies were born at home. Infant mortality was high and most families could expect to lose one or more of their babies within the first year of life. A family was expected to have babies, and they were certainly wanted in most situations, however, they did not generally receive the attention they do today. In the early years of the 21st century, the birth of a baby is a time of joy for most parents and extended families. Birth occurs most often in a hospital delivery room with the father and sometimes other family members present. While the infant mortality rate in the United States still lags behind many other developed countries, it has significantly improved over the past century, and infant death is not a family expectation. The main focus of this book is the journey babies have made over the past century. The rise of the middle class in America dictated major changes in the ways babies were fed, cared for, and raised. No longer a financial necessity as in an agrarian society, babies became a symbol of middle class prosperity and parents basked in the reflected glow. Social programs, authorized and regulated by federal and state government, became a reality. Progressive Era reformers focused on improving water and sanitation programs for all, which led directly to decreased infection among infants and improved the dismal morbidity and mortality rates prevalent among all social classes. Other programs, such as the Shepard-Towner Act, the Social Security Act, and Lyndon Johnson's Great Society initiatives also focused attention on babies. Advances in medicine allowed infants to be immunized against once-deadly and disabling diseases and to survive congenital defects, premature birth, and infectious disease. Physicians discovered the means to help infertile couples conceive and carry a baby to term. Prenatal care helped mothers prepare for the birth of a healthy baby. Early intervention services by educators, social workers, and others gave infants an advantage as they faced growing up in the modern era. At the beginning of the 21st century, most American babies are better off than they were in 1901. Overall they are bigger, healthier, and much more likely to survive the first year. But challenges remain. By reviewing the events of the past century, Reedy hopes we can make even more of a difference in the lives of American babies in the century to come.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ, a heartbreaking true story of love, loss and survival against all odds during the Second World war. Conscripted into the Polish army as Hitler’s forces draw closer, Jewish soldier Tolek Klings vows to return to his wife, Klara, and son, Juliusz. However, the army is rife with anti-Semitism and Tolek is relentlessly tormented. As the Germans invade Poland, he is faced with a terrible dilemma: flee home to protect his family – and risk being shot as a deserter – or remain a soldier, hoping reports of women and children being spared by the occupying forces are true. What follows is an extraordinary odyssey that will take Tolek – via a daring escape from a Hungarian internment camp – to Palestine, where his ability to type earns him the title of ‘The Miracle Typist’, then on to fight in Egypt, Tobruk and Italy. A broken telegram from Klara, ending with the haunting words, ‘We trouble’, makes Tolek even more determined to find his way home and fulfil his promise. This heartbreakingly inspiring true story is brought vividly to life by Tolek’s son-in-law, Melbourne writer Leon Silver. 'Told in gripping prose, The Miracle Typist is the story of one man's journey from World War II battlefields to Palestine and Italy and finally Australia. Tolek's courage and his determination to save his family is a wonder to read – made even more so by the fact that it is based on a heart wrenching true story. Highly recommended for lovers of historical fiction.' Anita Abriel, author of The Light After the War ‘Incredible, heart-wrenching and inspirational.’ Better Reading
