And activity of our pastors and teachers. Machinery, even the best, is useless without motive power, and while this increased spiritual power, on the part of our teachers, is what we most need, yet, as it is not for man to furnish, your committee would only offer a few suggestions to the Assembly. It is not necessary now-a-days to argue for the right of Sabbath Schools to exist, nor for their scriptural character: they do exist and are a power and a blessing in midst of us. The wisdom of the church, therefore, will be shown in availing herself of their assistance and rendering them as widely helpful to her work as possible. Their religious character and aim demand for them a religious mode of sustenance; the expenses of the Sabbath Schools would then be borne directly by their respective congregations. Teachers would not then need to resort to any of those undesirable and unchristian modes of' raising money, so common, yet so hurtful to the spiritual interests of teachers and scholars. Christ's work should be carried on by money given for Christ's sake. More attention should be paid to the singing in our schools, as an exercise interesting and profitable.
