Book excerpt: Computer simulation has developed into a powerful tool for problem solving in a variety of areas, in the sciences as well as in industrial environments. New developments such as parallel simulation techniques will further improve the efficiency of the tool. Decision support systems, either based on mathematical models or on knowledge based expert systems will make computer simulation accessible to more users, and will provide better environments for systems analysis, modeling and simulation. Systems Analysis and Simulation presents the papers accepted for the 3rd International Symposium for Systems Analysis and Simulation held in Berlin (GDR) in September of 1988. The contributions selected for this two-volume set present the state of the art and current trends in computer simulation. Volume I emphasizes the theoretical foundations and the methodology for computer simulation and systems analysis. Volume II presents a variety of applications in fields such as manufacturing, robotics, economics, and biology.

Book excerpt: The need for accurate computational procedures to evaluate detailed properties of gas phase chemical reactions is evident when one considers the wealth of information provided by laser, molecular beam and fast How experiments. By stressing ordinary scalar computers to their limiting performance quantum chemistry codes can already provide sufficiently accurate estimates of the stability of several small molecules and of the reactivity of a few elementary processes. However, the accurate characterization of a reactive process, even for small systems, is so demanding in terms of computer resources to make the use of supercomputers having vector and parallel features unavoidable. Sometimes to take full advantage from these features all is needed is a restructure of those parts of the computer code which perform vector and matrix manipulations and a parallel execution of its independent tasks. More often, a deeper restructure has to be carried out. This may involve the problem of choosing a suitable computational strategy or the more radical alternative of changing the theoretical treatment. There are cases, in fact, where theoretical approaches found to be inefficient on a scalar computer exhibit their full computational strength on a supercomputer.

They are used to address challenging science and technology problems. In recent years, however, progress in supercomputing in the United States has slowed. The development of the Earth Simulator supercomputer by Japan that the United States could lose its competitive advantage and, more importantly, the national competence needed to achieve national goals. In the wake of this development, the Department of Energy asked the NRC to assess the state of U.S. supercomputing capabilities and relevant R&D. Subsequently, the Senate directed DOE in S. Rpt. 107-220 to ask the NRC to evaluate the Advanced Simulation and Computing program of the National Nuclear Security Administration at DOE in light of the development of the Earth Simulator. This report provides an assessment of the current status of supercomputing in the United States including a review of current demand and technology, infrastructure and institutions, and international activities. The report also presents a number of recommendations to enable the United States to meet current and future needs for capability supercomputers.

Book excerpt: Computer organization and architecture is becoming an increasingly important core subject in the areas of computer science and its applications, and information technology constantly steers the relentless revolution going on in this discipline. This textbook demystifies the state of the art using a simple and step-by-step development from traditional fundamentals to the most advanced concepts entwined with this subject, maintaining a reasonable balance among various theoretical principles, numerous design approaches, and their actual practical implementations. Being driven by the diversified knowledge gained directly from working in the constantly changing environment of the information technology (IT) industry, the author sets the stage by describing the modern issues in different areas of this subject. He then continues to effectively provide a comprehensive source of material with exciting new developments using a wealth of concrete examples related to recent regulatory changes in the modern design and architecture of different categories of computer systems associated with real-life instances as case studies, ranging from micro to mini, supermini, mainframes, cluster architectures, massively parallel processing (MPP) systems, and even supercomputers with commodity processors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the book are reported the main results presented at the Third International Workshop on Data Analysis in Astronomy, held at the EUore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture, Erice, Sicily, Italy, on June 20-27,1988. The Workshop was the natural evolution of the two previous ones. The main goal of the first edition (Erice 1984) was to start a scientific interaction between Astronomers and Computer Scientists. Aim of the second (Erice 1986) was to look at the progress in data analysis methods and dedicated hardware technology. Data analysis problems become harder whenever the data are poor in statistics or the signal is weak and embedded in structured background. Experiments collecting data of such a nature require new and non-standard methodologies. Possibilistic approaches could be merged with the statistical ones, in order to formalize all the knowledge used by the scientists to reach conclusions. Moreover, the last decade has been characterized by very fast developments of Intelligent Systems for data analysis (knowledge based systems, ... ) that would be useful to support astronomers in complex decision making. For these reasons, the last edition of the workshop was intended to provide an overview on the state of the art in the data analysis methodologies and tools in the new frontieres of the astrophysics (y-astronomy, neutrino astronomy, gravitational waves, background radiation and extreme cosmic ray energy spectrum). The book is organized in two sections: - Data analysis methods and tools, - New frontieres in astronomy.

Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition, parallel computing technology has gained considerable momentum. A large proportion of this has come from the improvement in VLSI techniques, offering one to two orders of magnitude more devices than previously possible. A second contributing factor in the fast development of the subject is commercialization. The supercomputer is no longer restricted to a few well-established research institutions and large companies. A new computer breed combining the architectural advantages of the supercomputer with the advance of VLSI technology is now available at very attractive prices. A pioneering device in this development is the transputer, a VLSI processor specifically designed to operate in large concurrent systems. Parallel Computers 2: Architecture, Programming and Algorithms reflects the shift in emphasis of parallel computing and tracks the development of supercomputers in the years since the first edition was published. It looks at large-scale parallelism as found in transputer ensembles. This extensively rewritten second edition includes major new sections on the transputer and the OCCAM language. The book contains specific information on the various types of machines available, details of computer architecture and technologies, and descriptions of programming languages and algorithms. Aimed at an advanced undergraduate and postgraduate level, this handbook is also useful for research workers, machine designers, and programmers concerned with parallel computers. In addition, it will serve as a guide for potential parallel computer users, especially in disciplines where large amounts of computer time are regularly used.

Book excerpt: The third volume in the series on Computer Simulation of Biomolecular Systems continues with the format introduced in the first volume [1] and elaborated in the second volume [2]. The primary emphasis is on the methodological aspects of simulations, although there are some chapters that present the results obtained for specific systems of biological interest. The focus of this volume has changed somewhat since there are several chapters devoted to structure-based ligand design, which had only a single chapter in the second volume. It seems useful to set the stage for this volume by quoting from my preface to Volume 2 [2]. "The long-range 'goal of molecular approaches to biology is to describe living systems in terms of chemistry and physics. Over the last fifty years great progress has been made in applying the equations representing the underlying physical laws to chemical problems involv ing the structures and reactions of small molecules. Corresponding studies of mesoscopic systems have been undertaken much more recently. Molecular dynamics simulations, which are the primary focus of this volume, represent the most important theoretical approach to macromolecules of biological interest." ...
