Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Minister of Education Acknowledgments of my debt to workers in the field of creative educa tion are far greater, I suspect, than I am aware of. The books listed at the end of the volume indicate a measure of this indebtedness and I must content myself for the most part with that unsatisfactory form of ex pressed obligation. In particular, however, I wish to express my grateful appreciation to Religious Education, Chapter III; to Social Science, Chapter VI; to the Christian Leader, Chapter V; to the Journal of the National Association of Biblical Instructors, Chapter II; to Advance, Chapter X; and to the Tennessee Constitution, Chapter IV, for the permission to reproduce por tions of articles that have from time to time appeared in their publications. I wish also to thank the Abingdon Press, the Macmillan Company, the International Council of Religious Education, and the Yale University Press for permission to quote freely from their publications. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Education in the South This book is the outgrowth of several years' study of public educational problems in the United States, especially in the South, through courses in the history of education given at Trinity College and the University of North Carolina for teachers and prospective teachers and administrators. In such courses the aim has been to consider the principal problems of administration, support, and supervision of present-day education in the Southern States and to seek an understanding of their meaning in the light of their historical growth. The book is therefore a study of actual educational progress in the South rather than of educational theories and the relation between education and economic, social, political, and religious influences is given emphasis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Principles for the South: An Address Delivered Before the Department of Superintendence of the National Educational Association at Atlanta, Georgia, on February the Twenty-Fourth, 1904 The old civilization, whose ruling class was an aristocracy of land and slaves, has given place to a political and industrial democracy with no ruling class. But herein lies our danger, and out of this fact grows the special necessity for a system of popular education which shall train all our citizens to think clearly and act fearlessly each for himself. Now this growing conception of the rights and powers of the individual is accompanied by a growing consciousness of his need of preparation for all his functions, especially for the perform ance of his duties as a citizen. Witness the great conventions of colored people like the one held recently at Tuskegee. Witness the political uprising of the poor white man a few years ago under the farmer's alliance and the populist party. Witness, also, the great movement for better schools now stirring the whole South. The plain white man has awakened and is pressing for the rights of his child, and to him we now look as our chief supporter in this effort for the improvement of the schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Department of Superintendence of the National Educational Association, 1896 Mr. President; Members of the Department of Superintendence; Ladies and Gentlemen: As the representative of the people and teachers of the state, it gives me unbounded pleasure to give you welcome to Florida. The same cordial greeting is extended to you who have journeyed almost across the continent from north to south as to our immediate neighbors wrestling with problems and conditions similar to our own. We come together in council to confer about matters alike dear to us, and since the country is to be what the schools shall make it. To determine how we can best secure the perpetuity of our republican institutions and render wiser and happier the people of every condi tion in our common country. We admire the educational enthusiasm of our brethren from the North, expect to profit by learning their way to success in popular education, and are especially glad of the opportunity to reciprocate some of the kind treatment enjoyed at their hands while among them on occasions similar to this. After visiting your section and learning more of your people, we have always found ourselves more in sympathy and in love with you. We now rejoice that we have been able to entice so many of you down into the far South, where we will arrange for you to come often in midwinter unless the designs of some of us fail, hoping that you may be affected by a better knowledge of the South and her people, and the peculiar problems confronting them, as we were by a better knowledge of you. The white people of every section of our great country are proud of a common ancestry who fought side by side to leave to us the heritage of the best government the world ever saw; and it is now worthy the ambition and efforts of teachers, who are responsible for the intelligence and largely the prejudices of the next generation, to look to the protection of American institutions, and see that the sons are as united as were their fathers. The welfare of no other race or other nationality should entice the South into any alliance detrimental to the North, nor should the North forget the anglo-saxon blood of the South in her efforts to promote the interest of any people under the sun. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education in the South: Some Difficulties and Encouragements The chief difficulty in maintaining good public schools, as well as good schools of all kinds, in the Southern States, is the lack of money. The South sustained im mense losses by the war, while the North came out of that great struggle richer than at its beginning. The Southern people are mainly engaged in agricultural pur suits, ih which money is accumulated slowly; and, not withstanding the recent rapid increase in manufacturing industries, factories are not yet common in the South. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prevocational Education in the Public Schools During the past five years considerable interest has been developed in the problem of securing a better ad justment of our educational methods and ideals to the needs of those Who, though they form the vast majority of our children, are, for one reason or another, deriving the least benefit from the present school system, and are leaving its care altogether before reaching the age oi sixteen or seventeen years. Such school systems as have done experimental Work looking to the solution of this problem are constantly receiving requests for information relating to the pur pose of the Work, the methods which are being em ployed, and the results realized or expected. It is believed that school administrators and school teachers in general Will find something of interest and value in the information presented in this volume re garding one important branch of this experimental Work, namely prevocational education. For the purpose of collecting and of organizing such information the University of Chicago has conducted, during the past three years, an experimental industrial class. Instruction both in shopwork and in the book subjects has been given very largely by graduate stu dents in the Department of Education, mature men and women sincerely interested in the larger aspects of the problem presented.
