Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minimum Flow Recommendation for Passage of Colorado Squawfish and Razorback Sucker in the 2. 3 Mile Reach of the Lower Gunnison River: Redlands Diversion Dam to the Colorado River Confluence The -mile reach of the Lower Gunnison River between the Redlands Diversion Dam and the confluence with the Colorado River is important habitat for Colorado squawfish and razorback sucker and is designated critical habitat for these two fishes. The purpose of this study was to recommend a minimum streamflow for passage of sub-adult and adult Colorado squawfish and razorback sucker during low-flows in this reach. Book excerpt: The razorback sucker, which has declined in abundance in the upper Colorado River primarily because of man's impact on the environment, has been recommended for listing as "threatened" in the U.S. Department of Interior's list of threatened or endangered species. During the present investigation, razorback suckers were nevertheless found in relatively large concentrations at two restricted locations -- the mouth of the Yampa River and a flooded gravel pit connected to the Colorado River near Grand Junction, Colorado.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colorado River had one of the most unique fish communities in the world. Seventy-five percent of those species were found nowhere else in the world. Settlement of the lower basin brought dramatic change to both the river and its native fish. Those changes began more than 120 years ago as settlers began stocking nonnative fishes. By 1930, nonnative fish had spread throughout the lower basin and replaced native communities. All resemblance of historic river conditions faded with the construction of Hoover Dam in 1935 and other large water development projects. Today, few remember what the Colorado River was really like. Seven of the nine mainstream fishes are now Federally-protected as endangered. Federal and state agencies are attempting to recover these fish. However, progress has been frustrated due to the severity of human impact. This report represents testimony, old descriptions, and photographs describing the changes that have taken place in hopes that it will provide managers, biologists, and the interested public a better appreciation of the environment that shaped these unique fish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as a stand-alone textbook for students and a useful reference for professionals in government and private agencies, academic institutions, and consultants, Ecology and Conservation of Fishes provides broad, comprehensive, and systematic coverage of all aquatic systems from the mountains to the oceans. The book begins with overview discussions on the ecology, evolution, and diversity of fishes. It moves on to address freshwater, estuarine, and marine ecosystems and identifies factors that affect the distribution and abundance of fishes. It then examines the adaptations of fishes as a response to constraints posed in ecosystems. The book concludes with four chapters on applied ecology to discuss the critical issues of management, conservation, biodiversity crises, and climate change. Major marine fisheries have collapsed, and there are worldwide declines in freshwater fish populations. Fishery scientists and managers must become more effective at understanding and dealing with resource issues. If not, fish species, communities, and entire ecosystems will continue to decline as habitats change and species are lost. Ecology and Conservation of Fishes has taken a historical and functional approach to explain how we got where we are, providing old and new with a better foundation as ecologists and conservationists, and most importantly, it awakens senses of purpose and need. Past management practices are reviewed, present programs considered, and the need for incorporating principles of applied ecology in future practices is emphasized.
