Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Miniature Pinschers are a unique, sassy breed with broad appeal. The Miniature Pinscher has been bred over time to handle the specific demands and requirements of farmers, so these dogs have a high-energy personality that does not waver much between individuals. How did Miniature Pinschers make it into the hearts and homes of millions? We can only answer this question by looking back at their history. The Miniature Pinscher originates in Germany, and is surprisingly unrelated to Doberman Pinschers. This breed’s closest ancestors are the Italian Greyhound and the Dachshund, both of whom also have sleek, sporty frames. Miniature Pinschers were originally bred to be a hunting breed; they were not house pets, but working dogs often left to their own devices. Their characteristic cropped ears and tail, as outlined in the American Kennel Club's (AKC) guidelines, trace back to the breed's history as a hunter, as ears and tails were often cropped short to minimize the risk of damage and infection from rodent bites or errant horse hooves. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Treat your dog with a flea and tick preventative in the spring and summertime. Fleas, ticks, and other insects carry parasites and other illnesses, making them a risk as well as a nuisance. If your dog spends any time outdoors, he should have a flea and tick preventative to ward off any intruders. This keeps your home and indoor pets safe from pests as well. Your veterinarian will likely have recommendations for safe preventatives, so be sure to ask during your annual visit if you are at all uncertain. Miniature Pinschers are fairly healthy dogs, but they are prone to a few breed-specific conditions. First and foremost, Miniature Pinschers’ skinny legs are prone to injuries. If you have children, special care must be taken to ensure all play is safe. On a similar note, Miniature Pinschers are prone to kneecap displacement. Aging Miniature Pinschers are prone to hip joint degeneration, so regular veterinary examinations and possible supplementation are an excellent idea when your Miniature Pinscher reaches advanced age. Glucosamine supplementation and anti-inflammatory drugs are excellent options for arthritic pets. However, the best medicine is prevention, so do your best to provide your young Miniature Pinscher plenty of exercise to encourage the development of strong joints and bones... Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often shortened to "Min Pin," the Miniature Pinscher is a toy dog breed with a short stature and a characteristic look. The Miniature Pinscher is defined and typified as follows: - Miniature Pinschers are, as their name suggests, little dogs. They usually range in size from 8 to 12.5 pounds (3.6 to 5.7 kg) with a shoulder height of 10 to 12.5 inches (25 to 32 cm). - Little Pinschers look like little versions of standard poodles: slim but powerful. They have a short, smooth coat that can come in numerous hues, but the most frequent is a reddish-brown with rust patterns. Their most recognizable trait is their high-set, pointy ears and attentive face. - The temperament of a Min Pin is one that is active, attentive, and full of life. They have a big personality despite their diminutive stature because they are generally portrayed as brave and confident. In addition to being quite active, they are a lot of fun. - Miniature Pinschers are known for their wit and intelligence. They may be quick to pick up new information and respond well to teaching, but they also may have a streak of stubbornness or independence. - Although the Miniature Pinscher looks similar to the Doberman Pinscher, the two breeds are actually very different. It has been around for quite some time, with its roots in Germany. The breed's ancestors sought to create a small yet effective hunting dog, one that would excel at catching rats and other rodents. They changed over time into the playful pets we know today. - Regular exercise is essential for the emotional and physical health of your Min Pin. To keep them occupied, they take pleasure in games, hikes, and toys that encourage interaction. - Patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, and ocular disorders are some of the health problems that might affect Miniature Pinschers. Some of these dangers can be lessened through responsible breeding and frequent veterinarian treatment. - Miniature Pinschers can live up to 14 years old with the right kind of TLC from their human companions. The Miniature Pinscher is an excellent pet for energetic people or busy families who can give their dog the care and exercise it needs.
