Book excerpt: This report identifies potential small-scale (less than 20 MW) hydro sites in mainland NS capable of supporting an installed capacity in excess of 500 kW. A preliminary cost estimate is provided for each site and brief case histories are given on 5 existing small-scale hydroelectric developments, ranging from 5-500 kW. Potential sites were identified from available mapping and were first screened on the basis of head and drainage area necessary to meet the study objectives. The inventory excluded rivers with existing hydroelectric and active water supply developments and watersheds in national and provincial parks. Sites were not screened for environmental impacts, although sites with known environmental constraints are noted and a brief environmental overview is presented. Costs were estimated using a further development of the SHYDRO program, using IBM PCs or compatibles.
