Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marshall Eakin presents what may be the most detailed study ever written about the operations of a foreign business in Latin America and the first scholarly, book-length study of any foreign business enterprise in Brazil. Between 1830 and 1970 the British-owned St. John d’el Rey Mining Company, Ltd. constructed a diverse business conglomerate around Minas Gerais, South America’s largest gold mine, in Nova Lima. Until the 1950s the company was the largest industrial firm and the largest taxpayer in Brazil’s most populous state. Utilizing company and local archives, Eakin shows that the company was surprisingly ineffective in translating economic success into political influence in Brazil. The most impressive impact of the British operation was at the local level, transforming a small, agrarian community into a sizable industrial city. Virtually a company town, Nova Lima experienced a small-scale industrial revolution as the community made the transition from the largest industrial slave complex in Brazil to a working-class city torn by labor strife and violence between communists and their opponents.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Resources of Minas Geraes (Brazil) Every writer who has made a study of the mineral resources of Brazil has been struck by the amazing anomaly that proportionately as the incalculable extent and richness of those resources has become better known, the mining industry of the country has diminished. Many reasons have been advanced to explain the enigma that the facts present. The liberation of the slave-workers, bad legislation and exorbitant taxation, lack of railway communication, political unrest and financial instability, and the incompetence and dishonesty that have attended the exploitation of the mines and the management of the companies that have been formed to work them, are among the numerous disabilities from which the industry has suffered in the past; but while these drawbacks are being steadily removed, the disfavour, into which mining enterprise in the Republic has fallen, remains. The Brazilians themselves, apparently indifferent to the enormous national asset which these minerals represent, have devoted their activities to agricultural advancement, and it would almost seem that these people, with a score of potential gold-fields at their very doors, are immune from that "gold fever" which has rendered possible the recent stupendous progress that has been made by a host of other countries less rich in minerals than their own. The diamond industry of Brazil is a dwindling enterprise in the hands of individual prospectors and ill-equipped bands of miners, although for a century and a half which succeeded the discovery of the first brilliant in Diamantina, Brazil's output of diamonds exceeded that of any other country. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the competitive dynamics, strategic challenges, technological needs and institutional innovation-promoting arrangements in Brazil’s mining sector in order to identify the ways in which mining firms and mining equipment, technology and services suppliers (METS) handle innovation appropriation and technology transfer in the country. As the main sample consisted of resident and non-resident companies, the key technological areas of mining-related patenting in Brazil and the main patent stakeholders have been identified. The analysis of technology transfer among firms and to other mining industry stakeholders, mainly universities, drew on import contracts and highlighted the role played by foreign METS. A case study of Vale S.A., Brazil’s largest mining enterprise, has been included, with emphasis on Vale’s strategies to mitigate external challenges and to meet technological needs through innovation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For twenty-five years, Kendall Brown studied Potosí, Spanish America's greatest silver producer and perhaps the world's most famous mining district. He read about the flood of silver that flowed from its Cerro Rico and learned of the toil of its miners. Potosí symbolized fabulous wealth and unbelievable suffering. New World bullion stimulated the formation of the first world economy but at the same time it had profound consequences for labor, as mine operators and refiners resorted to extreme forms of coercion to secure workers. In many cases the environment also suffered devastating harm. All of this occurred in the name of wealth for individual entrepreneurs, companies, and the ruling states. Yet the question remains of how much economic development mining managed to produce in Latin America and what were its social and ecological consequences. Brown's focus on the legendary mines at Potosí and comparison of its operations to those of other mines in Latin America is a well-written and accessible study that is the first to span the colonial era to the present.
