When she first appeared in last year’s Nobody Notices Minerva, critics and children instantly took the irrepressible, irresistible Boston terrier to their hearts. Mischievous, playful, and more than a little bit naughty, she thoroughly embodied the lovable spirit of a toddler. Now, Wednesday Kirwan has done it again, as Minerva dons a monster costume—and starts behaving like one, too. Whenever Mom asks her to eat her green beans or Dad tells her to put on her pajamas, she just growls and says that monsters don’t do that! But Minerva is about to find out that sometimes being a real child is better than being an imaginary beast.

Book excerpt: Gear up for a frightful jaunt into the darkest reaches of the ancient Appalachians. Folk deep within Appalachian hollers lean close to share stories of the inexplicable with hushed awe. Monsters rumbling in the hills. Strange lights darting through the pitch-black night sky. Horrible occurrences, almost ineffable in their bizarre tragedy. "Tall tales," you might say. But tell that to the Flatwoods monster in Braxton County, West Virginia. Or the Goat Man of Louisville--look into his humanoid eyes and let him know you don't believe. And what of those apparitions in Mammoth Cave's Corpse Rock, or the Satan-spawn known as the Jersey Devil? How do you respond when those mysteries confront? From metaphysical energy that swirls near the Serpent Mound in Ohio to Point Pleasant's Mothman legacy, Mark Muncy and Kari Schultz explore the dark history lurking in the shadows of Appalachia..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminal behaviors take place everyday. It is up to us to heal from them. Naturally, physical assault can lead to much depression, anxiety, and durable fiascos. Eternal joy is a promise for all who come to Jesus Christ enlisting his assistance to fill all the holes dug in the wrong places. The Cookie Monster is a tale about beauty arising from destruction, probably the only notable work of this kind. Lonnie P. Anderson takes you on a journey through forgiveness and overcoming, never giving up on the faith, joy, and hope that are ours for the taking. Workmanship and steady philosophical hope takes place throughout an incandescent and provocative emblem of desire. Love is a reward for those who search for and find the companionship of the Lord Jesus. Belligerent denial of obstructive cantankerous situations miffs the truth of good opinion and disastrous deceit, where leaning on lies sends you down to the bottom. History depletes natures of soliloquy and pardonable, individual complications of remorse. Repercussions give grace to interludes of stress and overcoming, where faith complies with nature and becomes spiritually renewed. Antagonism resists our efforts to destroy evil, yet we can resist those most ignoble forces of destruction patterned after lost or suicidal redemption. Cookies were made for cookie monsters and cookie kings. Let this elaborate epic saga grace you in learning about the “baker”, our Father in Heaven and the cookie monster whose attributes refine and conclude with victory. Baskets of cookies roam our world today. See first hand what a cookie monster can do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging, readable yet impeccably scholarly investigation of monsters in Classical literature will entertain and stimulate as well as inform. It covers all the major mythical monsters mentioned by Greek and Roman authors (Medusa, Hydra, Polyphemus, the Minotaur, Sphinx, Harpies, Sirens, Cerberus, Chimaera, Centaurs, and many more) along with Classical precursors of vampires, werewolves and the living dead. Versions of these creatures that appear in later literature and film are also discussed. Mythical Monsters is original in considering monsters squarely from a literary standpoint, introducing elements of literary analysis gradually as the work progresses, and building up to quite a sophisticated approach. This will increase readers' critical appreciation and plain enjoyment of these stories, which continue to fascinate today. To facilitate browsing, each chapter can be read independently. There is a useful bibliography, and the book is enlivened by illustrations from ancient and more recent art.

Book excerpt: In December 1495 the Tiber River flooded the city of Rome causing extensive drowning and destruction. When the water finally receded, a rumor began to circulate that a grotesque monstrosity had been discovered in the muddy detritus—the Roman monster. The creature itself is inherently fascinating, consisting of an eclectic combination of human and animal body parts. The symbolism of these elements, the interpretations that religious controversialists read into them, and the history of the image itself, help to document antipapal polemics from fifteenth-century Rome to the Elizabethan religious settlement. This study examines the iconography of the image of the Roman monster and offers ideological reasons for associating the image with the pre-Reformation Waldensians and Bohemian Brethren. It accounts for the reproduction and survival of the monster's image in fifteenth-century Bohemia and provides historical background on the topos of the papal Antichrist, a concept that Philip Melanchthon associated with the monster. It contextualizes Melanchthon’s tract, “The Pope-Ass Explained,” within the first five years of the Lutheran movement, and it documents the popularity of the Roman monster within the polemical and apocalyptic writings of the Reformation. This is a careful examination and interpretation of all relevant primary documents and secondary historical literature in telling the story of the origins and impact of the most famous monstrous portent of the Reformation era.
