To be useful to beginners, it must be little else than a compilation from more comprehensive books, and the compiler can only show his judgment in the careful selection of authentic originals. Such have constantly been had recourse to in preparing the following pages. To render such a work entertaining as well as instructive, all rigid arrangement must be renounced; and it will be found that the present one is neither chemical, mineralogical, commercial, nor historical, but as much of all these as was consistent with the above-mentioned object. With the same view, many descriptions have been introduced which would not properly come under any of these heads of division. As might be expected in such a work, the Metals, from their paramount importance in the arts, occupy the principal space. Not one of those at present known, has been passed over, and for the following reason - young persons generally acquire in early life an idea that the metals are few and limited in number, because they have had those only mentioned to them which are more immediately conducive to our comfort and our wants.
