Book excerpt: Rome is proud to host the eighth edition of the European Conference on Mineralogy and Spectroscopy (ECMS 2015). This is a welcome back, after the starting point of this conference cycle in Rome (1988) and following editions held in Berlin (1995), Kiev (1996), Paris (2001), Vienna (2004), Stockholm (2007) and Potsdam (2011). The Rome 2015 conference will hopefully reflect the philosophy of previous conferences and provide a common forum to present new ideas, concepts and results related to mineral spectroscopy. It will also offer an opportunity for students and young scientists to meet and interact with established, well-known scientists. The conference deals with mineralogy, spectroscopy and related fields of science, bringing together both theoretically and experimentally oriented scientists and providing an opportunity to share ideas and learn from one another. The ECMS 2015 is housed in the headquarters of the National Research Council, and consists of three days of oral presentations and two days of poster sessions. Keynote lectures will be presented by Frank C. Hawthorne, Laurence Galoisy, Robert D. Shannon, Giancarlo Della Ventura, Bjorn Winkler and Catherine McCammon. This volume is the joint effort of all conference participants largely coming from Europe, but also from America, Asia and Australia. It contains 100 contributions, many of which present experimental results and applications based on new or well-established analytical techniques, while others highlight theoretical and computational approaches to our better understanding of short-range and long-range structures of minerals and materials. We are very grateful for the constant support of Francesco Di Benedetto (publicity chair), Sabrina Nazzareni (treasurer) and our scientific advisory board: Danilo Bersani, Giuseppe Cruciani, Michele Dondi, Ulf Hålenius, Monika Koch-Müller, Roberta Oberti, Henrik Skogby and Sergio Speziale. Book excerpt: Volume 56 of the Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry reviews the current state of knowledge on the epidote minerals with special emphasis on the advances that were made since the comprehensive review of Deer et al. (1986). In the Introduction, we review the structure, optical data and crystal chemistry of this mineral group, all of which form the basis for understanding much of the following material in the volume. In addition, we provide some information on special topics, such as morphology and growth, deformation behavior, and gemology. Thermodynamic properties (Chapter 2, Gottschalk), the spectroscopy of the epidote minerals (Chapter 3, Liebscher) and a review of the experimental studies (Chapter 4, Poli and Schmidt) constitute the first section of chapters. These fields are closely related, and all three chapters show the significant progress over the last years, but that some of the critical questions such as the problem of miscibility and miscibility gaps are still not completely solved. This section concludes with a review of fluid inclusion studies (Chapter 5, Klemd), a topic that turned out to be of large interest for petrogenetic interpretation, and leads to the description of natural epidote occurrences in the second section of the book. These following chapters review the geological environments of the epdiote minerals, from low temperature in geothermal fields (Chapter 6, Bird and Spieler), to common metamorphic rocks (Chapter 7, Grapes and Hoskin) and to high- and ultrahigh pressure (Chapter 8, Enami, Liou and Mattinson) and the magmatic regime (Chapter 9, Schmidt and Poli). Allanite (Chapter 10, Gieré and Sorensen) and piemontite (Chapter 11, Bonazzi and Menchetti), on which a large amount of information is now available, are reviewed in separate chapters. Finally trace element (Chapter 12, Frei, Liebscher, Franz and Dulski) and isotopic studies, both stable and radiogenic isotopes (Chapter 13, Morrison) are considered. We found it unavoidable that there is some overlap between individual chapters. This is an inherited problem in a mineral group such as the epidote minerals, which forms intensive solid solutions between the major components of rock forming minerals as well as with trace elements.

The book also provides insights into sample preparation and/or spectrum registration methods. It includes IR spectra of 1020 minerals that were not covered in the book “Infrared spectra of mineral species: Extended library” published in 2014 and written by one of the authors. On average, each page provides information on two minerals/compounds. Subsections correspond to different classes of compounds (silicates, phosphates, arsenates, oxides etc.). About 290 new spectra have been obtained, and the remaining 1310 spectra are taken from most reliable literature sources (published over the last 60 years) and are redrawn in a unified style.
