Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Slavs in Post-Nazi Austria by : Robert Knight
Download or read book Slavs in Post-Nazi Austria written by Robert Knight and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Knight's book examines how the 60,000 strong Slovene community in the Austrian borderland province of Carinthia continued to suffer in the wake of Nazism's fall. It explores how and why Nazi values continued to be influential in a post-Nazi era in postwar Central Europe and provides valuable insights into the Cold War as a point of interaction of local, national and international politics. Though Austria was re-established in 1945 as Hitler's 'first victim', many Austrians continued to share principles which had underpinned the Third Reich. Long treated as both inferior and threatening prior to the rise of Hitler and then persecuted during his time in power, the Slovenes of Carinthia were prevented from equality of schooling by local Nazis in the years that followed World War Two, behavior that was tolerated in Vienna and largely ignored by the rest of the world. Slavs in Post-Nazi Austria uses this vital case study to discuss wider issues relating to the stubborn legacy of Nazism in postwar Europe and to instill a deeper understanding of the interplay between collective and individual (liberal) rights in Central Europe. This is a fascinating study for anyone interested in knowing more about the disturbing imprint that Nazism left in some parts of Europe in the postwar years.
Book Synopsis (Hidden) Minorities by : Christian Promitzer
Download or read book (Hidden) Minorities written by Christian Promitzer and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2009 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book asks why several ethnic and linguistic groups in Central Europe and the Balkans have not yet been legally recognized as national minorities. Some of these hidden minorities have not developed an intellectual elite that can visibly present their identity and claims to the majority population. Other groups are deliberately concealing their existence and language for reasons of self-protection. The chapters in this volume address the everyday mechanisms of hiding and being hidden in the transition zone of these two European regions.

Book Synopsis Creating the Other by : Nancy M. Wingfield
Download or read book Creating the Other written by Nancy M. Wingfield and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2003-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historic myths of a people/nation usually play an important role in the creation and consolidation of the basic concepts from which the self-image of that nation derives. These concepts include not only images of the nation itself, but also images of other peoples. Although the construction of ethnic stereotypes during the "long" nineteenth century initially had other functions than simply the homogenization of the particular culture and the exclusion of "others" from the public sphere, the evaluation of peoples according to criteria that included "level of civilization" yielded "rankings" of ethnic groups within the Habsburg Monarchy. That provided the basis for later, more divisive ethnic characterizations of exclusive nationalism, as addressed in this volume that examines the roots and results of ethnic, nationalist, and racial conflict in the region from a variety of historical and theoretical perspectives.
Download or read book Lexicology written by D. Alan Cruse and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2005 with total page 1012 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Federalism, Subnational Constitutions, and Minority Rights by : G. Alan Tarr
Download or read book Federalism, Subnational Constitutions, and Minority Rights written by G. Alan Tarr and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-08-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether federalism and subnational constitutions contribute to or undermine minority rights has long been a subject of controversy. Within the United States, the general view has been that federalism has been detrimental to minority rights. In contrast, other countries have seen federalism as crucial in safeguarding rights of ethnic and religious minorities. This volume provides the basis for a more nuanced assessment of the contributions of federalism and subnational constitutions to protecting minority rights by studying their impact in a variety of federal systems. This work explores both mature federal systems (Switzerland, United States) systems in transition (Belgium, Bosnia, Herzegovina), both quasifederal (Italy, Spain) and well-established systems (Germany), both systems with considerable homogeneity of population (Austria) and systems with extraordinary diversity (India). It also analyses the various constitutional arrangements that federal systems have devised for safeguarding minority rights and given them a voice in political deliberations.

Book Synopsis Local and Global Understandings of Creativities by : Ardian Ahmedaja
Download or read book Local and Global Understandings of Creativities written by Ardian Ahmedaja and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In music making “in company”, the protagonists have to follow the rules of interaction and create the cohesion of “being together”. At the same time, they try to promote personal goals that depend on specific personal treasure troves of experience. These are continuously being modified also as a result of the exchange between individuals. The perspective of the “individuals in company” leads the emphasis of the investigations to the ways in which the acts of performance, interpretation and local discourse give shape to creative processes in multipart music making and to the definition of the individual, collective and collaborative dimensions in this context. Focusing on the “creators” rather than on the “produced object”, the studies included in this volume explore the diversity of the roles, powers, symbolism, meanings and values given to the “polyphony of voices” in secular and religious traditions based on extensive fieldwork experience. The contributors to this volume also consider the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in this context, as well as the role of local, national and international awards. By understanding “culture as a drug”, whose absorption is realised within interacting cells, culture appears as a cellular network and music as quite an efficient device for its functioning.
