Book excerpt: During the Seven Years War, British troops had been committed sparingly to continental Europe, the English war effort being made overseas in conjunction with the preeminent Royal Navy. However in 1759 the British troops under Ferdinand of Brunswick would achieve a remarkable victory against the French army at the battle of Minden. The battle began with a duel of guns on the wings of the battleline; after an indecisive battering Ferdinand ordered the division containing the British regiments to advance. In a misunderstanding of their orders the British regiments advanced swiftly on the centre of the French army, which was held by cavalry. Battered at close range by French guns the British soldiers grimly held on despite repeated French cavalry charges; in an echo of Cressey the flower of French chivalry was laid low by dogged British vollies. Once Ferdinand saw the penetration of the French lines and the wrecked French cavalry he ordered a general advance which rapidly put the French army to flight earning one the greatest victories of the entire war. In this short volume written by the renowned historian Sir Lees Knowles, are recounted the valiant deeds of the six British regiments that smashed all before them, a victory that is commemorated to this day.

Book excerpt: A profile of an outstanding military commander of the Seven Years War The principal subject of this book, Prince Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick, is a particularly fascinating character for students of military history on several counts. Not least among these is that the highly regarded military historian Sir John Fortescue, judged that Ferdinand was 'the finest commander of British troops in the field between the periods of Marlborough and Wellington.' These notable commanders epitomise the highest of military achievements, and it is rare for another commander to be well enough regarded to be compared to them. It is noteworthy, therefore, that unlike these other great soldiers so little has been written about Ferdinand. Though a commander of British troops Ferdinand was not an Englishman but, perhaps tellingly in terms of his comparative neglect by British historians, a Prussian. Nevertheless, the battles he fought brought honours--which abide to this day--to the colours of British regiments under his command. This special Leonaur book includes the writings of several authors, and contains biographical details of Ferdinand, an interesting overview of his battles and campaigns, a summary of the British regiments he commanded and a fascinating and insightful personal account by one of his senior officers. The text of our edition further benefits from the inclusion of several campaign and battlefield maps, plus illustrations, which were not present in any original publication of the texts. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book excerpt: Johann Ewald began as a commoner in one of the states of the Holy Roman Empire who rose above the constraints of his time. As a soldier he fought in all of the great conflict of the latter eighteenth century, the Seven Years’ War, the American War of Independence and the Napoleonic Wars. He keenly recorded his observations of both the people he met and places he encountered throughout these adventures. Through all of his experiences, he remained a soldiers’ soldier. Due to his observations on the conduct of irregular warfare in his time, he has become on the most important authorities on eighteenth century small-unit tactics. His writings provide a unique insight on the major events of the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Johann von Ewald stood as one of the most accomplished practitioners of irregular warfare in the eighteenth century. Beginning his military career in the Seven Years’ War, and continuing through the American War of Independence, he amassed a vast wealth of experience leading troops in the art of irregular warfare or petite guerre. He later wrote several works based on his experiences, and at least one of these received the favorable comment of Frederick the Great, the warrior King of Prussia. In addition, Ewald composed for the members of his family a diary of his experiences in the American War of Independence. Later on, he served in the Danish Army during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Among all but a small group of dedicated scholars of the American War of Independence, however, Johann von Ewald has vanished into obscurity. There are no other English language biographies of Ewald, and only a few articles in German that date to the nineteenth century. It is the purpose of this work to rescue him from oblivion. Telling Ewald’s story, therefore, tells much of the story of warfare in the second half of the eighteenth century. Instead of focusing on the great battles, however, Ewald’s biography focuses on the conduct of irregular operations: raids, ambushes and the like. Ewald allows readers a view into this often neglected dimension of eighteenth century warfare, and the proposed biography will thoroughly explore the topic through his writings, both his military treatises and his diary of the American War of Independence.
