Book excerpt: Through memoir style writing, author Sylvia Hoehns Wright demonstrates on the pages of Eco-legacy - a millennium woman's heritage the importance of a woman pondering her life in all its phases, from the beginning experienced to the future desired. Inviting readers to walk on a path worn smooth by generational expectation, Wright savors nostalgia for places that are near and dear to heart, recalls family traditions; and perhaps more importantly, enables renewal of experience. Challenging all to celebrate heritage because heritage is more than a possession, it is a gift: the birthright of our children. The present-day caretaker for her family's 7th generational property, Wright credits the legacy of a rural Virginia childhood and Quaker lifestyle belief - view self as caretaker, not owner of property: a perspective of providing for present without sacrificing future - as the source for her eco commitment. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the HWA Non-Fiction Crown Award 2023 The history of a demonic tradition that was stolen from women – and then won back again. 'Remarkable work... Extraordinary, meticulous detail' Literary Review 'Deftly fuses scholarly rigour, control of literary and archaeological sources' BBC History Magazine Creatures like Lilith, the seductive first wife of Adam, and mermaids, who lured sailors to their death, are familiar figures in the genre of monstrous temptresses who use their charms to entice men to their doom. But if we go back 4,000 years, the roots of these demons lie in horrific creatures like Lamashtu, a lion-headed Mesopotamian demon who strangled infants and murdered pregnant women, and Gello, a virgin ghost of ancient Greece who killed expectant mothers and babies out of jealousy. Far from enticing men into danger and destruction, these monsters were part of women's ritual practices surrounding childbirth and pregnancy. So how did their mythology evolve into one focused on the seduction of men? Sarah Clegg takes us on an absorbing and witty journey from ancient Mesopotamia to the present day, encountering a multitude of serpentine succubi, a child-eating wolf-monster of ancient Greece, the Queen of Sheba and a host of vampires. Clegg shows how these demons were appropriated by male-centred societies, before they were eventually recast as symbols of women's liberation, offering new insights into attitudes towards womanhood, sexuality and women's rights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimer et Mourir offers a wide-ranging selection of essays that collectively address how, from the Middle Ages to the present, the notions of love and death get inextricably associated with the narratives that are women’s lives. Some of the essays tackle male writers’ representations that link women and, in particular, women’s sexuality, with death, resulting in the figures of the femme fatale, the woman in parturition, and the desiring vampire. A number of essays reiterate that women’s hyper-sexualized bodies have been used as a social construct and a psychological screen upon which to project a fear of death. The challenges to this pat reduction of “woman’s” domain come from the mostly women writers represented here—and they span from Marguerite de Navarre to Amélie Nothomb. These women writers rework the old formulae, giving us instead death-defying memories of love, love regenerative of language (as of bodies), love forcing the frontiers of death, or love creatively redefined within the parameters of death. Nor are these new narratives imagined as belonging to women alone but rather as attesting to a richer, more varied, and greatly sensitized human experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women’s Ordination in the Catholic Church argues that women can be validly ordained to ministerial office. O’Brien shows that claims by Roman dicasteries for an unbroken chain of authoritative tradition on the non-ordainability of women—a novel rather than traditional argument—are not historically supported. In the primitive Church, with the offices of deacon, presbyter, and bishop in process of development, women exercised ministries later understood as pertaining to those offices. The sub-apostolic period downplayed women’s ministry for reasons of cultural adaptation, not because it was thought that fidelity to Christ required it. Furthermore, extensive epigraphical evidence, from a wide geographical area, references women deacons and presbyters during the first millennium. Restrictive developments in the concept of ordination from the twelfth century onwards do not negate how, before that, women were validly ordained according to contemporary ecclesial understanding. Repeated canonical prohibitions on ordaining women show both that women were being ordained and how those bans were very selectively implemented. These canons were a cultural practice in search of a theology, and the subsequent theological justifications for restricting ordination to men appealed to supposed female inferiority against the background of priesthood as eminence rather than service. O’Brien shows that the assertion of women’s non-ordainability is a matter of canon law rather than doctrine. As such, that law can be reformed.

Focusing on fiction films made in Europe between 1945 and the present, this study explores dominant discourses on and cinematic representation of women as perpetrators, victims and resisters. Ingrid Lewis contends that European Holocaust Cinema underwent a rich and complex trajectory of change with regard to the representation of women. This change both reflects and responds to key socio-cultural developments in the intervening decades as well as to new directions in cinema, historical research and politics of remembrance. The book will appeal to international scholars, students and educators within the fields of Holocaust Studies, Film Studies, European Cinema and Women’s Studies.

Book excerpt: “A good entrepreneur is one who is capable of inspiring confidence in people, and has ability to motivate them to work with him in fulfilling the economic goals set by him.” Introduction Entrepreneurship plays an imperative role in the growth of any society. Development of entrepreneurship culture and qualitative business development services are the major requirements for industrial growth. Entrepreneurship emerges from an individual’s creative spirit in long-term business ownership, employment creation, capital formation and economic security. Entrepreneurial skills are essential for industrialization and for alleviation of mass unemployment and poverty. As technology speeds up lives, women are an emerging economic force, which cannot neglect by the policy makers. The world’s modern democratic economy depends on the participation of both sexes. Global markets and women were not often use in the same sentence, but increasingly, statistics show that women have economic clout-most visibly as entrepreneurs and most powerfully as consumers. Today, women in advanced market economies own more than 25% of all businesses and women owned businesses in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America are growing rapidly. In some regions of the world, transformation of market economy, women entrepreneurs is a growing trend. However, in India, the actual participation of women in income generating activities is quite unsatisfactory, only 8% of the small-scale manufacturing units have owned and operated by women.

It's not supposed to be this way. We fought so hard for freedom And you have put me back in chains Commitment, trust, seems to be bad words. I'm in bondage to your mind games Remember, you have a mother, sister, or daughter But it was me you gave the ring. I have come to this conclusion I don't need a king TO BE A QUEEN! I've had to raise the children alone Like when the master sold you astray Now I have to look for you And again you've become a runaway A man that can walk out on his family Is a part of slavery's aftermath? But enough with the dumb stuff The past is the past. I am still that woman Who made you feel like a man? Now you are so out of place Still, you want me to understand. Another form of rejection I'm asking myself "what's wrong with me" Why am I always to blame? For your misplaced priorities? Either you get it together Either you are right or you are wrong. I can raise the children with you. I should not have to do it alone. Come inside these pages. Allow me to tailor you to fit Coming from the strength of this Whole Woman. I should not be penalized for it I'm going to speak to the Whole Man in you Like I do in our time of intimacy. That's when I give you the freedom to be you And you give me the freedom to be me. Men are checking me out "right now" Making statements and, my, how they do flatter. They ask "Why are you alone or single?" Realize! I do have a choice in the matter. I was asked if I were to define the book WHOLE in one sentence, what would I say? "WHOLE is a groundbreaking, ground shaking, revolution that demands results!" "I recall the day as though it was yesterday. I stood in the mirror looking at a reflection of defeat never knowing if I would reach my God-ordained destiny. All my dreams, hopes, and desires devastated. I was distrait, frail, and I had gone from a size 12 to a size 6. I was beyond distressed I was destroyed. Lifelines can come in many ways. I knew I wanted and needed to come out, but I didn't know how. This is the time when I had to get real with myself and everyone else-so I threw out a lifeline. I made a simple telephone call to a friend and the Revolution began!"

Book excerpt: As the first major encyclopedia of its kind, The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Bible and Gender Studies (OEBGS) is the go-to source for scholars and students undertaking original research in the field. Extending the work of nineteenth and twentieth century feminist scholarship and more recent queer studies, the Encyclopedia seeks to advance the scholarly conversation by systematically exploring the ways in which gender is constructed in the diverse texts, cultures, and readers that constitute the world of the Bible. With contributions from leading scholars in gender and biblical studies as well as contemporary gender theorists, classicists, archaeologists, and ancient historians, this comprehensive reference work reflects the diverse and interdisciplinary nature of the field and traces both historical and modern conceptions of gender and sexuality in the Bible. The two-volume Encyclopedia contains more than 160 entries ranging in length from 1,000 to 10,000 words. Each entry includes bibliographic references and suggestions for further reading, as well as a topical outline and index to aid in research. The OEBGS builds upon the pioneering work of biblically focused gender theorists to help guide and encourage further gendered discussions of the Bible.
