Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2021 PULITZER PRIZE IN POETRY FINALIST FOR THE 2020 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR POETRY Natalie Diaz’s highly anticipated follow-up to When My Brother Was an Aztec, winner of an American Book Award Postcolonial Love Poem is an anthem of desire against erasure. Natalie Diaz’s brilliant second collection demands that every body carried in its pages—bodies of language, land, rivers, suffering brothers, enemies, and lovers—be touched and held as beloveds. Through these poems, the wounds inflicted by America onto an indigenous people are allowed to bloom pleasure and tenderness: “Let me call my anxiety, desire, then. / Let me call it, a garden.” In this new lyrical landscape, the bodies of indigenous, Latinx, black, and brown women are simultaneously the body politic and the body ecstatic. In claiming this autonomy of desire, language is pushed to its dark edges, the astonishing dunefields and forests where pleasure and love are both grief and joy, violence and sensuality. Diaz defies the conditions from which she writes, a nation whose creation predicated the diminishment and ultimate erasure of bodies like hers and the people she loves: “I am doing my best to not become a museum / of myself. I am doing my best to breathe in and out. // I am begging: Let me be lonely but not invisible.” Postcolonial Love Poem unravels notions of American goodness and creates something more powerful than hope—in it, a future is built, future being a matrix of the choices we make now, and in these poems, Diaz chooses love.

Poems depict topics such as chastity of a girl, for her it is paragon of virtue, a precious ornament. Leisure time describes admiration of beauty. Amulet on breast is weapon against evil and rape. Loneliness shattered the dreams, teaches real sense of hurting. A glamorous girl walks like pretty diva. Wealth brought a handsome faced wife. Money is all purpose tool, can fix many things. Mathematics add blessings, multiplies joys, divides sorrows. Reality of life is that lust cannot be fulfilled till death. True love exists in books only. It is puzzle of pain and pleasure. Celebrate love that ignites spark in heart, makes one realize that he is still alive. Understand the feelings of single mother. Collect shattered pieces of heart; give a blast of love to restore. Draw figures of vivid thoughts on silvery sand. Illusions are created by artists to enact game of heaven and hell. Wayfarer is to be given mask of free smiles. Love poems in heart nursery germinate to incarnate lover’s body. Jasmine is a girl, mine of treasure, ocean of pleasure. Love is when she opens slowly her deep navel and round breasts. Love is defender, love with passion. As poet I use pens of different colors that depict emotions of the poem. When I was a little girl, everyone loved and kissed, I still possess that love. A tattooed girl smiled, her lips got tattooed on my heart. Love plant fruits are vibrant with secrets, full of life. Relatives are like fish in water, slippery, catch them to release. As coal I will burn your heart, with emotions of smiles and tears. I tried to conceal my love, my eyes expressed them. I am a poet I reflect the image of society, I have narrated the truth, scenes of life. Poetry is pure imagination, conscious refinement of words, originates in emotion.

Book excerpt: Many years ago, while attending high school in Stockholm, Sweden, we read a poem that I simply fell in love with. It was Vintergatan (Winter Street) by Zacharias Topelius. Fast forward to 2010 when I happened upon my old book of poetry. I reread Vintergatan and was just as charmed by it as before. Wishing I could share it with my husband, children, and friends who did not speak Swedish, I searched for its English translation. I found a few that were beautiful, yet to me, they sounded old-fashioned or too formal--not the kind of poetic language I envisioned my teenage grandchildren falling in love with as I once did. I decided to come up with my own translation, attempting to remain faithful to the original Swedish yet maintain a closer sound or cadence of contemporary written or spoken English. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to a select group of friends who were pleased to discuss my translation efforts with me. There were pros and cons and suggestions, all to be considered. Thank you for your support, input, and encouragement. It meant the world to me! Finally, I thank my lucky star for the day I met and became friends with Jamie Hogan, a wonderful person and exceptionally talented artist and illustrator with a long list of accomplishments. In this book, she invites you into a whole other dimension of The Milky Way to appreciate and absorb long after you have finished reading.

Book excerpt: This major new poetry collection from bestselling poet and priest Malcolm Guite features more than seventy new and previously unpublished works. At the heart of this collection is a sequence of twenty seven sonnets written in response to George Herbert’s exquisite sonnet 'Prayer', each one describing prayer in an arresting metaphor such as ‘the church's banquet’, ‘reversed thunder’, ‘the Milky Way’, ‘the bird of paradise’ and ‘something understood’. In conversation with each of these, Malcolm’s sonnets offer profound insights into the nature of communion with God in all circumstances and conditions. Recognising that all poetry is a pursuit of prayer, After Prayer also includes forty five more widely ranging new poems, including a sonnet sequence on the seven heavens.

Book excerpt: The poems in Under the Tail of the Milky Way Galaxy were written after Ethel Mortenson Davis moved from New Mexico back to her home state of Wisconsin. As an artist Davis's work is filled with movement and intense colors that involve the viewer with an intense imagery. Her poetry is, in a lot of ways, like her pastels. It is compressed, intense, visual, and, ultimately, memorable. John Looker, one of Britains greatest poets, said of this, Davis's fifth book, "Here is a harvest of finely-judged lyrical poems that express a joy in the natural world. Carefully observed and beautifully expressed, they are not merely nature poems, however. Ethel Mortenson Davis has a deep reverence for nature, coupled with sadness at humankind's frequent indifference. There are moments of striking insight as, for example, in this reference to the tree snail or slug: "trails of lubricant/ caught by sunlight/ in a mathematical moment." Elsewhere there are equivocal judgments about her own species, as when she tells a rescued animal, "humans are both tormentor/ and saviors." So, there's delight to be found in these pages, but also a call for awareness." Standing Feather, an outstanding New Mexico poet, wrote that "There is something profoundly spiritual and tragically elusive in our understanding of the vast wilderness. In Under the Tail of the Milky Way Galaxy, Ethel Mortenson Davis shows us how to connect deeply with the sacred spiral and reminds us that compassion is the fragrant essence that draws light into the darkness of human desire and elevates us to the edge of grand possibility." This is a book that has both nature and the tragedy of humanity as its themes. It can be tough sometimes, but more often than not the poetry reaches for a beauty and power that the reader will not soon forget.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the emotional undertow of Ocean Vuong and the astute political observations of Natalie Diaz, a powerful poetry debut exploring the effects of racism, war and colonialism, queer love and desire. In their breathtaking international debut, Aaiún Nin plumbs the depths of the lived and enduring effects of colonialism in their native country, Angola. In these pages, Nin untangles complexities of exile, the reckoning of familial love, but also reveals the power of queer love and desire through the body that yearns to love and be loved. Nin shows the ways in which faith and devotion serve as forms of oppression and interrogates the nature of home by reclaiming the persistent echoes of trauma. A captivating blend of evocative prose and intimate testimony, Nin speaks to the universal vulnerability of existence.
