Book excerpt: Honest, heartrending and full of humour, this is an extraordinary memoir about an unconventional childhood and the absurdities of the cancer experience. It is also, most importantly, a celebration of life. When Genevieve Fox finds a lump in her throat, she turns up for the hospital diagnosis in a party frock and fancy hair. I can't have cancer, she thinks. I've done my hair. But there is another reason she can't countenance cancer. She was orphaned to it at the age of nine. Genevieve's story weaves together past and present as she recalls her rackety, unconventional childhood, while also facing the spectre of being lost to her young boys. Yet she confronts her treatment with the same sassy survival instinct that characterised her childhood misadventures. She takes life's precariousness and turns it on its head. 'Life-enhancing... Book excerpt: In 1962 a lone astronaut orbiting the Earth sighted a small cluster of lights on the dark silhouette of Australia's western coastline - a token of friendship from the people of Perth that prompted the world's media to dub this isolated provincial outpost the "City of Light". This book expands the metaphor by shedding new light on the social history of Perth since the 1950s. Its focus is the city center and the events that unfolded there. After a lively sketch of prewar Perth, Jenny Gregory ventures into the historically uncharted territory of the postwar era. The result is a frank, incisive and richly detailed investigation of the city's growth and transformation over a fifty-year period, from the modernist era of postwar reconstruction to the mid-nineties.

After an attempted suicide reveals the doctor/patient relationship that she has had with her psychiatrist for many years, she takes a look back at her life to understand how she arrived at such a painful and critical point, tracing her background from childhood and including the effects of a long-term physical illness and many emotional traumas. Believing that a formal education in psychology might help her understand her psychiatrist's point of view, she enters college, but following graduate school, her life takes a different path when she and her husband have an opportunity to become self-employed. A bitter divorce and a destructive relationship throw her into a long emotional tailspin and it takes some time for her to recover. She continues to study and work feeling the majority of life's tests are behind, so she is shocked when a rare, debilitating, and incurable disease begins taking hold, one that will dictate how she must live the rest of her life.
