Book Synopsis Automatic milking, a better understanding by : A. Meijering
Download or read book Automatic milking, a better understanding written by A. Meijering and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 2000 the book Robotic Milking, reflecting the proceedings of an International Symposium which was held in The Netherlands came out. At that time, commercial introduction of automatic milking systems was no longer obstructed by technological inadequacies. Particularly in a few west-European countries, systems were being installed at an increasing rate. However, it was recognised that the changeover from 'traditional' to automatic milking affected the farming operation, herd management and control of milk quality profoundly and that many of the implications were still unknown. So, new challenges in various fields of dairy farming and new research areas emerged. Since this previous International Symposium, much has happened. In general automatic milking has been adopted as a realistic alternative for milking in the 'traditional' milking parlour. Systems have gradually been improved and, maybe even more importantly, farmers have become more familiar with their potential and limitations, both technically and in herd management. The number of farms milking with an automatic milking system has worldwide increased to more than 2.200 by the end of 2003 . From 2000 to now, the level of scientific knowledge on various aspects and consequences of automatic milking has increased largely as well because of research efforts all over the world. A significant share of these efforts has been made within the framework of a EU-granted project on the implications of the introduction of automatic milking on dairy farms. Some seven research institutes and six industrial companies from six countries joined their expertise and experience in order to facilitate a widespread adoption of automatic milking without undesirable side effects. This book reflects the knowledge on automatic milking generated all over the world in the last few years. Its contents can therefore be regarded as the present state of knowledge in the field of automatic milking, for a better understanding."

Book Synopsis Optimization of Milking Management at the Quarter Level by : John Francis Penry
Download or read book Optimization of Milking Management at the Quarter Level written by John Francis Penry and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimization of milking management at the quarter level By: John Francis Penry Under the supervision of: Prof. Douglas J. Reinemann The research theme for this dissertation is optimization of milking management at the quarter level. Milking management is defined in 3 ways. Firstly, milking speed, is defined as kg of milk harvested per unit time between teatcup attachment and detachment. Secondly, gentleness of milking, is defined as milking where teat canal keratin turnover is optimal, teat tissue is not congested or otherwise damaged by the milking process and new intramammary infection risk is not increased. Finally, milk production efficiency, is defined by milk production rate (kg/h) of cows and the resulting milk available for harvest at the time of milking. The objectives for this research are: assess the effect of mouthpiece chamber vacuum on teat-end congestion; develop a methodology to quantify the effects of vacuum, pulsation, and liner compression conditions on teat congestion occurs and milking speed; describe cow level factors which are associated with milk flow rate during the peak milk flow period; describe the association between peak milk flow rate and clinical mastitis in a North American housed cow; describe quarter level milk production variability; describe the association between quarter level milk production rate and milking interval and assess if reduction in milking interval in mid-lactation affects milk production rate; assess if incomplete milking, defined at the quarter level, affects quarter milk production rate. The research was conducted using experiments manipulating milking machine settings at the quarter and udder level in addition to manipulation of milking interval in an automatic milking system. An observational study in a large commercial herd using an automatic milking system was also undertaken. Highlights of research results include: the importance of mouthpiece chamber vacuum in teat-end congestion formation and prediction of liner performance using a central composite design; the characterization of cow level factors milking interval or, day in milk, and their association with peak milk flow rate; the characterization of intra-udder quarter milk production variability; and the effect of under-milking on milk production rate at the quarter level.

Book Synopsis Stress and Animal Welfare by : Donald M. Broom
Download or read book Stress and Animal Welfare written by Donald M. Broom and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the Second Edition of a well-received book that reflects a fresh, integrated coverage of the concepts and scientific measurement of stress and welfare of animals including humans. This book explains the basic biological principles of coping with many forms of adversity. The major part of this work is devoted to explaining scientifically usable concepts in stress and welfare. A wide range of welfare indicators are highlighted in detail with examples being drawn from man and other species. The necessity for combining information from disciplines is emphasized with a one-health, one-welfare approach. This information forms the basis for a synthesis of new ideas. Among the issues covered are: - How brain and body systems regulate using feelings, physiological responses, behaviour and responses to pathology - Limits to adaptation - Assessing positive and negative welfare during both short-term and long-term situations - Ethical problems and suggested solutions A proper assessment of animal welfare is essential to take informed decisions about what is morally acceptable in terms of practice and in the development of a more effective legislation. This work encapsulates a very wide body of literature on scientific aspects of animal welfare and will thus prove a valuable asset for animal welfare scientists, psychologists, students and teachers of all forms of biology, behaviour, medicine, veterinary medicine and animal usage.

Book Synopsis Managing High Grade Dairy Cows in the Tropics by : John Moran
Download or read book Managing High Grade Dairy Cows in the Tropics written by John Moran and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dairy consumption in Asia has more than doubled over the last 25 years, and has led to more than 50% of the world’s total dairy imports now entering Asian markets. Consequently, Asian countries are seeking to improve their self-sufficiency in dairy produce by developing their local milk industries. Asian livestock importers are looking for increasing numbers of high grade dairy stock from established dairy industries in countries such as Australia and New Zealand. Unfortunately, a major problem encountered throughout Asia has been the poor performance of these exotic high grade dairy heifers when exported from their country of origin to a new, more stressful environment. This has been due to a failure to prepare for their introduction. Exotic dairy cows, particularly those from farms with high levels of herd performance, have high management requirements. If subjected to local and traditional small holder dairy farm practices, they are unlikely to produce acceptable yields of milk or may not even get back into calf. Poor management practices can lead to low growth rates, delayed breeding, stock diseases and even deaths among imported stock both before and after first calving. Managing High Grade Dairy Cows in the Tropics addresses the entire range of management practices found on tropical small holder dairy farms, highlighting those which are likely to adversely impact on heifer and cow performance, hence farm profitability. It is a companion volume to three other manuals written by John Moran: Rearing Young Stock on Tropical Dairy Farms in Asia, Tropical Dairy Farming and Business Management for Tropical Dairy Farmers.
