The walking tour ends with a visit to Bicentennial Park, where the Harriet Wilson Memorial stands. Parking is available in Union Square and on the side streets surrounding "the oval" in Milford center. The walk covers approximately 3.5 miles and takes a little over two hours to complete.Sponsored by the Black Heritage Trail of NH and The Harriet Wilson Project. Harriet E. Wilson, a native of Milford, wrote the pre-Civil War novel, Our Nig, which is believed to be the first novel by an African American woman to be published in the United States. Originally published anonymously in 1859, the autobiographical novel Our Nig fell into obscurity. When noted at all, it was assumed its author was white. Henry Louis Gates Jr., a Harvard professor, historian, filmmaker, and MacArthur Fellow, re-discovered the novel, documented its true author, and republished it, with Harriet Wilson's name, in 1983.
