Book Synopsis Servants Depots in Colonial South Australia by : Marie Ann Steiner
Download or read book Servants Depots in Colonial South Australia written by Marie Ann Steiner and published by Wakefield Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marie Steiner's SERVANTS DEPOTS IN COLONIAL SOUTH AUSTRALIA is a fascinating account of a little-known period in South Australian history. In 1855 the colony of South Australia experienced 'excessive female immigration', with large numbers of single females arriving from the British Isles to work as servants. When an economic downturn led to a shortage of domestic help positions, the Colonial Government was moved to establish servants' depots around South Australia to house them. The book details the day-to-day running of these depots, and reveals much about the attitudes towards women in colonial South Australia.

Book Synopsis The Stag Diary - Passage to Colonial Adelaide 1850 by : Doug Limbrick
Download or read book The Stag Diary - Passage to Colonial Adelaide 1850 written by Doug Limbrick and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-12-30 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British history, particularly British Imperial history, includes the movement of people from Britain to other parts of the world. For many this was a move as emigrants seeking a new life in another country. From about 1830 there was considerable interest in emigration to the Australian colonies, supported for the first time by various British government and colonial programs of assisted passage. The passage to the Australian colonies involved travelling half way around the world. For over ninety percent of emigrants this necessitated passage in a small wooden square-rigged sailing vessel beneath the deck as steerage class passengers, where conditions were rudimentary, crowded, noisy, smelly, damp and lacked privacy. This book tells the story of a passage by some 260 emigrants to colonial South Australia in 1850 on board a square-rigged vessel called the Stag. It incorporates the transcribed diary of one of the steerage class passengers Francis C Taylor and gives a vivid insight into shipboard life on the long and difficult passage.

Download or read book A History of South Australia written by Paul Sendziuk and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of South Australia investigates South Australia's history from before the arrival of the first European maritime explorers to the present day, and examines its distinctive origins as a 'free' settlement. In this compelling and nuanced history, Paul Sendziuk and Robert Foster consider the imprint of people on the land - and vice versa - and offer fresh insights into relations between Indigenous people and the European colonisers. They chart South Australia's economic, political and social development, including the advance and retreat of an interventionist government, the establishment of the state's distinctive socio-political formations, and its relationship to the rest of Australia and the world. The first comprehensive, single-volume history of the state to be published in over fifty years, A History of South Australia is an essential and engaging contribution to our understanding of South Australia's past.

Download or read book Irish Passenger Lists, 1847-1871 written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These passenger lists, which cover the period of the Irish Famine and its aftermath, identify the emigrants' "actual places of residence", as well as their port of departure and nationality. Essentially business records, the lists were developed from the order books of two main passenger lines operating out of Londonderry--J.& J. Cooke (1847-67) and William McCorkell & Co. (1863-71). Both sets of records provide the emigrant's name, age, and address, and the name of the ship. The Cooke lists provide the ship's destination and year of sailing, while the McCorkell lists provide the date engaged and the scheduled sailing date. Altogether 27,495 passengers are identified.

Download or read book Doctors at Sea written by R. Haines and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-11-22 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engaging tale of movement from one hemisphere to another, we see doctors at work attending to their often odious and demanding duties at sea, in quarantine, and after arrival. The book shows, in graphic detail, just why a few notorious voyages suffered tragic loss of life in the absence of competent supervision. Its emphasis, however, is on demonstrating the extent to which the professionalism of the majority of surgeon superintendents, even on ships where childhood epidemics raged, led to the extraordinary saving of life on the Australian route in the Victorian era.
