La muestra incluyó el trabajo de 11 fotógrafas y fotógrafos de la región fronteriza Tijuana-San Diego, quienes capturan los rostros de personas migrantes, sus semblantes entre la angustia y la esperanza en la cotidianidad, mientras aguardan la respuesta a su solicitud de asilo. Las imágenes ofrecen testimonios que nos aproximan a su intimidad, dejando entrever lo difícil de su camino y lo lento del proceso, pero siempre con la confianza de conseguir su propósito, mostrando cómo pese a las dificultades e incertidumbres que enfrentan miles de migrantes, aún hay lugar para las sonrisas, la solidaridad, la ternura y el amor. Además del legado fotográfico, se incluye una introducción y capítulos sobre los cambios recientes del fenómeno migratorios en México, así como el vínculo entre el trabajo académico y la fotografía. En el apartado final, las y los fotógrafos comparten sus reflexiones en torno a su labor como fotoperiodistas frente a la búsqueda de asilo y refugio de tantas personas. Esperamos que esta obra contribuya a la construcción de una percepción más sensible y humana de la migración en esta región fronteriza.

It is said that the body remembers experiences, and through this issue we find ourselves revisiting the memories of displaced yet reoriented bodies throughout our simultaneously interconnected and fractured world.This multidisciplinary and multilingual exploration of migration and asylum, compiled in collaboration with the Asylum H-Lab at NYU's Center for the Humanities, works to establish an interconnected perspective on the opportunities and tensions created when people move across territories divided by state-enforced borders. The H-Lab focuses on "information/evidence/data regarding asylum seekers and the asylum process in the United States." The combination of the H-Lab's analytical dossier with other creative and individual approaches to the theme, including students' relationship with their own migratory history, allows Esferas 12 to elaborate on the layered influences of the politics of enforcement, punishment, access and (self-)identification, as well as the ethical responsibilities in a field which includes and represents such a vulnerable population.It is through this establishment of cross-cultural and multidisciplinary languages and connections that Esferas 12 presents varieties of justice in the area of migration. This work must be done by meeting the needs of migrants and support organizations involved in all aspects of the migration system and by drawing attention to the global asylum crisis in a variety of academic and social contexts. We encourage self-representation, individual autonomy, and authority/validity in creative and artistic representations. We believe that our support of the act of representation is a modest but necessary act of intervention.
