Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of a symposium devoted to the contemporary knowledge of the world of Copernicus - the planetary system - to commemorate the 500th anniversary of his birth, came during the XIV General Assembly of IAU in Brighton. The Executive Committee has approved it in the program of the Extraordinary (Copernicus) General Assembly ofIAU in Poland in 1973. The IAU Symposium No 65 (Copernicus Symposium IV) on the 'Exploration of the Planetary System' was held in Copernicus' native town - Torun, Poland, from 5th to 8th September, 1973 under the auspices of Commissions 16 (Physical Study of Planets and Satellites) and 40 (Radio-astronomy) and the co-sponsorship of COSPAR. There were about 140 invited participants from 29 countries and about the same num ber of other participants to the Extraordinary General Assembly of IAU who came to Torun to attend the sessions of this symposium. Special funds of the Polish Acade my of Sciences made possible the participation of several young astronomers in this meeting. We are very grateful to Professor P. Swings, the Director of the Astrophysical Institute of the University of Liege, Belgium, for accepting the task of chairing this symposium. His expert and enthusiastic guidance helped us constantly in the prepara tion. The efforts of the Members of the Scientific Organizing Committee are also very much appreciated. Special thanks are due to Professors A. Dollfus and T. Owen.

Book Synopsis Safety with Lasers and Other Optical Sources by : D. H. Sliney
Download or read book Safety with Lasers and Other Optical Sources written by D. H. Sliney and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 1042 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly a decade aga a general review article on the evaluation of optical radia tion hazards was published in Applied Optics (Sliney and Freasier, 1973). This arti cle received many favorable comments but also prompted many inquiries regarding specific optical hazard problems. From this it became evident that a monograph rather than a supplemental and expanded article was needed to fill this literature gap relating to laser and optical radiation hazards. The present work is designed to fill that gap, and is structured to permit either classroom or self-study use. Much of the material in this book was developed in eonnection with short courses on laser safety and radiometry in which we have participated, as weIl as from our previous articles. In particular, the sequenee of chapters is based upon the experiences which we have had in lecturing in courses with different schedules. One of the great difficulties in developing a text of this nature is that a broad, multidisciplinary background must be included in order that the reader can comprehend all of the subjeet matter readily. For this reason, the material presented on anatomy and physiology is orien ted toward the engineer or physical scientist, while the review material on basic optical physics is intended more for the physician or life scientist.

Book Synopsis Photoelectronic Imaging Devices by : Lucien Biberman
Download or read book Photoelectronic Imaging Devices written by Lucien Biberman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has seen a major resurgence in optical research and the teaching of optics in the major universities both in this country and abroad. Electrooptical devices have become achallenging subject of study that has penetrated both the electrical engineering and the physics departments of most major schools. There seems to be something about the laser that has appealed to both the practical electrical engineer with a hankering for fundamental research and to the fundamental physicist with a hankering to be practical. Somehow or other, this same form of enthusiasm has not previously existed in the study of photoelectronic devices that form images. This field of endeavor is becoming more and more sophisticated as newer forms of solid-state devices enter the field, not only in the data-processing end, but in the conversion of radiant energy into electrical charge patterns that are stored, manipulated, and read out in a way that a decade ago would have been considered beyond some fundamental limit or other.

Book Synopsis Photophysiology by : Arthur C. Giese
Download or read book Photophysiology written by Arthur C. Giese and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photophysiology: Current Topics in Photobiology and Photochemistry, Volume VI is a collection of papers that discusses photobiological phenomena found on cells of organisms. The papers in this collection deal with specialized areas of photobiology. One paper describes the instruments used in measuring the course of chlorophyll fluorescence in vivo that occurs when a chlorophyll molecule, stimulated by a light source, returns to its ground state from a previous first singlet state, resulting in a light emission lasting for a few nanoseconds. Another paper discusses the mechanism of light-induced carotenoid synthesis in nonphotosynthetic plants, including temperature-independent photochemical reactions, which results in the organism's producing carotenoids on subsequent incubations in darkness. One paper also explains photosensitization observed in mutant cells resulting from exposure to specific wavelength of light in the presence of a natural sensitizer. This paper points out that there are four main groups of photosensitizers, namely, the hypericins, chlorophylls, porphyrins, and psoralens. This book can prove valuable for cell biologists, micro-biologists, students, and researchers involved in the fields of photobiology and photochemistry.
Book Synopsis Air Mass Computer Program for Atmospheric Transmittance/radiance Calculation by : William O. Gallery
Download or read book Air Mass Computer Program for Atmospheric Transmittance/radiance Calculation written by William O. Gallery and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculations of atmospheric transmittance and radiance require the knowledge of the integrated amounts of the absorbing gases along the path. This report describes the calculation of the integrated amounts ('air mass' or 'column density') for various infrared absorbing gases for an arbitrary slant path through the atmosphere, including the effects of both curvature and refraction, and presents a Fortran program. FSCATM, to perform the calculation. Among the features of FSCATM are: 1. It calculates the layer-by-layer integrated absorber amounts and density-weighted pressure and temperature for an arbitrary slant path through the atmosphere. 2. It assumes a spherically symmetric atmospheric with exponential profiles of density and refractivity between layer boundaries. 3. It allows a variety of options for specifying the slant path. 4. It includes six representative atmospheric profiles of pressure and temperature, and of density for the gases H2O, CO2, O3, N2O, CO, CH3, and O2 and has provision for user-supplied profiles of up to 20 gases. 5. The output layering may either be generated internally or supplied by the user. 6. It portable to 32 bit word computers in single precision and compatible with both ANSI Standard FORTRAN 66 and 77. 7. It is modular and easily modified to suit the users' particular needs. A discussion of atmospheric profile data and a survey of the literature are included in appendices.
