Book excerpt: The purpose of this case study was to examine the transition from junior high school to a middle school as experienced in two middle schools from a mid-sized urban school district located in the Rocky Mountains. The overarching question that guided data collection for this study centered on the factors that influenced school culture before, during, and after the transition from junior highs to middle schools as perceived by school leaders and teachers. Data were collected from the Middle School Teacher Survey, individual interviews and district artifacts. The study incorporated an intentional change theory. Results from the study showed that the schools had varied outcomes from the transition and the overall middle school culture. The conclusion of these outcomes varied within the district because of the site-based implementation of the transition. However, the results of the study showed that the district factor of leadership and organization, prior to the transition, with using empirical evidence, open communication with staff and the community, and a structured timeline for planning has proven successful in the sample studied. Within the case study, the perceptions of school leaders and school teachers provided evidence that one school did not transition as successfully as another within the middle school model and struggled with utilizing the factors from the study that ranged from leadership, cooperation, and teaming.

Within the national campaign in China for the innovative and sustainable development of education, local governments in Beijing Municipality have encouraged and facilitated educational innovation toward better school culture. In recent years various initiatives have been undertaken by a select group of schools to develop strategies and further action toward innovation and change. This book documents an investigation of how teachers and principals perceive school culture development in China. A survey was conducted among 1,992 informants from 37 schools (located in four different districts) in Beijing Municipality. The results of this study indicated that the respondents had overall positive perceptions of school culture construction and development in the educational change process. In general, they showed a positive attitude toward the school culture improvement initiatives, reported satisfaction about their current school culture and held confidence in the direction their school culture is heading. The study demonstrated that certain factors, such as school geographical location and respondents’ job duty, job title, and gender, make a difference in how participants perceive their school’s culture. Teachers and principals from a less economically developed district had less awareness of, involvement in, and understanding of school culture development in all its aspects. A notable gap between teachers and principals was identified in their perception of the core values and norms of the school and of communication between teachers and principals. This study suggests that for educational development to be further carried forward successfully, there is an urgent need for better distribution of educational resources (both financial and leadership), common understanding, agreed-upon goals, and efficient communication between principals and teachers. The participants were 3 middle school administrators and 34 teachers from one middle school located in the southeastern Pennsylvania. The perceptions of the middle school administrators and teachers were obtained using a Likert-type scale survey, an on-line survey (questionnaire) with open-ended items, and focus group interviews. The online survey consisted of demographic questions, ethical leadership questions, and open-ended questions. In this study, the relationships between personal characteristics, ethical leadership characteristics, and ethical decision-making were examined. The researcher conducted a cross analysis to measure the significance levels among all the demographic, ethics, and ethical leadership. Furthermore, during the focus group interview, the middle school administrators and teachers reflected upon their own leadership experiences within the school and community. The underlining themes derived during the focus group interviews areas were: ethics, ethical leadership, school culture, and ethical leadership practice. The findings of the study indicated that all the middle school administrators and teachers value the importance of ethical leadership at their school. However, more than half of the participants have never taken ethical leadership classes, workshops, or trainings. Furthermore, middle school administrators and teachers specified that collaboration is essential in implementing ethical leadership in their school and in developing professional development opportunities for every staff member in the middle school. Finally, the culture of the school will be affected as the middle school administrators and teachers continue discussing the importance of ethical leadership, the characteristics of ethical leaders, and making ethical decisions.

In recent years it has been subject of research and discussion in the context of urban schools reform and effective school leadership. This qualitative case study was designed for the purpose to provide deeper insight into teacher leaders' perceptions of professional purpose and school culture through the language of metaphors. Engaged in school reform efforts, one high school was selected for this study. Factors contributing to the framing of this project include personal interest in urban schools' reform work, metaphorical language of leadership, as well as involvement in a teacher leadership role and professional learning communities (PLCs). The literature review included analysis of concepts on teacher leadership, metaphorical language, organizational change, and appreciative inquiry. Teacher leaders and administrative leaders participated in this study. Individual interviews, focus group interview, and document analysis revealed several metaphorical themes of professional purpose and school culture. Deeply engaged in school reform efforts, the research setting was characterized as having a strong teacher leadership component, a comprehensive professional learning model, and a culture based on collaboration and focus on student learning. Current and aspired metaphors of teacher leaders' professional purpose were based on the belief that "what we do matters" and "we are builders, designers, and creators of relationships and success." With respect to school culture, most dominant current metaphorical themes included: "we are a school culture focused on professional learning" and "we are a school culture of collaboration and integration;" the aspired metaphors described a school culture as "becoming more innovative" and resembling a "global village." Implications from this study include the value of teacher leadership, appreciative inquiry, and metaphorical framing in guiding the organizational change efforts in making high need urban schools a great success."--

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the field of education started experiencing an increase in job stress due to "inadequate school funding, balancing school management with instructional leadership, new curriculum standards, educating an increasingly diverse population, shouldering responsibility that once belonged to home or in the community, and then facing possible termination if schools don't show instant results" (Hargreaves & Fink, 2006, p.12). Reports as early as 2008 indicate a trend in teachers leaving the field of education resulting in an onset of a teacher shortage. The disruption to education due to the COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented and has only added more stress to an already high-stress profession.The key findings in this study reveal that empathy among educational leadership serves as a pillar for positive school culture and climate, thus giving merit to its importance. In relation to the research questions, the findings have identified viable leadership practices and supportive leadership qualities that ultimately influence student progress within elementary schools.

Also, this study sought to determine the perception teachers had regarding their effect on school culture as well as the effect culture had on job satisfaction. The research took place in one suburban intermediate school in southeast Pennsylvania. Qualitative data in the form of a survey using Likert scale questions, open-ended questions, and interviews were collected and analyzed. The analysis of the data collected indicated that the overwhelming majority of teachers agreed that principals have either a positive or negative effect on school culture. Moreover, participants agreed that teachers played an important role determining the culture of the school. Data also illustrated that school culture relates to teacher job satisfaction. A general trend emerging from this study was the importance of establishing positive relationships in school. The connections between principals and teachers, teachers to their peers, and all professionals to students were vital in establishing positive school culture. This study concluded teachers felt more fulfillment and contentment with their profession when school culture was positive. The results of this study align to the current research on positive school culture. Districts can use the results of such research when creating hiring criteria for new principals and teachers. This research adds to the belief that both teachers and principals should have more training in the effects of school culture.

There have been many research studies dedicated to determining if a school's culture and climate had an effect on student achievement. This study sought to determine if teachers' perceptions of school culture and climate had an impact on student achievement at the elementary and secondary level. In 1963, Halpin and Croft began their research on the organizational climate of schools and suggested that further research be conducted based on their findings. This research sought to determine if there was a relationship between teachers' perceptions of school culture and climate and students' marking period/trimester 1 grades, teachers' perceptions of school culture and climate and students' Start Strong scores, and teachers' perceptions of school culture and climate and school leadership. The New Jersey School Climate Survey was distributed to teachers in four small school districts in Warren County, NJ. Survey data was collected from a total of 62 respondents, and academic data was provided to the researcher on coded spreadsheets. Data analysis was performed using Pearson correlation tests and independent sample t-tests through the use of the SPSS program in order to determine if any potential relationships existed. The data revealed that teachers' perceptions of school culture and climate did not have an impact on student achievement. Additionally, there were a number of relationships that existed with regard to teachers' perceptions of culture and climate and school leadership. The results indicated that the high school respondents answered less favorably compared to the elementary school respondents on the school leadership survey questions. This study may help school leaders have constructive conversations with their staff with regard to the school's culture and climate.(ProQuest abstract).

These issues point to leadership at various levels, whether in its exercise or in its influence, and are examined within and across national and regional education systems. Particular attention is given to debates around improving outcomes for students, teacher development and the role of the principal in leading school improvement. A source of debate about practice of school leadership in the Caribbean surrounds the issue of gender. Where are men in teaching? Where are men in leadership positions and positions of responsibility? Unlike in some countries where, for example, men tend to hold more leadership positions than women, especially at the secondary phase of education, in the Caribbean this is not the case: there are more female teachers at every level and more female teachers occupy leadership positions at every level. Within this book, gendered leadership as practised and enacted in the Caribbean is examined from religious, social, historical and political positions, pointing to a clear political dichotomy. There is no unitary definition of what can count as school leadership in the Caribbean, despite clear similarities of practices and approaches. What this volume argues, however, is that within the Caribbean region there are many similarities of experience for the practice and exercise of school leadership which draw on a common framework of teacher training, a common language and a common socio-political history that existed well before the formation of CARICOM through British colonisation. This book does not dwell on the period of British colonisation but discusses the extent to which this period in Caribbean history has influenced the practice of school leadership today, most notably in areas such as curricular and teacher training models. Education in emergency situations, such teaching and learning in severe weather conditions such as hurricanes, is also spotlighted. As a whole, the themes in this edited volume proffer an evidence-based approach to contemporary issues in school leadership in the Caribbean and extend the current literature in the field.

Book excerpt: This dissertation determined the congruence with the order of importance concerning what middle school teachers and middle school principals value regarding the behavioral characteristics of effective middle school principals and if a relationship exists between those characteristics and the 2006/2008 North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Surveys. The indications and suggestions of this research were based on the data collected from many different middle schools representing different geographical areas within a large school system located within the piedmont-triad central region of North Carolina. Information was obtained from different multi-question surveys from middle school teachers and principals, open-ended questions, and focus group interviews. This component of the study identified any common behavioral characteristics that the teachers and principals, at the same school, have of themselves with an order of importance. This information was compared to the 2006 and 2008 results of the North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Surveys information from the same middle schools to determine if a correlation existed between the total data collected. The results of this research indicated that the younger teachers with less teaching experiences wanted their principal to have the traits of a manager and an instructional leader. The older teachers with more teaching experiences wanted their principal to have the traits of one who uses people skills and one who has a vision. The principals see themselves primarily as instructional leaders.
