Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No region in the world has seen so much development activity in the last ten years as the Gulf area. Since ‘black gold’ catapulted the oil-producing countries into the limelight of the international political and economic scene, there has been a proliferation of studies on the larger exporting states. However, many of the so-called ‘small countries’ have been neglected in this exercise. This book presents the first detailed examination of the bases and extent of economic development in Qatar and considers the need to translate the petroleum-generated growth into viable, self-sustained development. Qatar, though not one of the oil ‘giants’, was first in the field of oil development and exhibits a number of special features not shared by its Gulf neighbours: for example in pre-oil boom days it was already in advance of many other Gulf states in the field of education; it has a modest agriculture sector and there is a comparatively strong attachment to the land; and finally it has played an important role in OPEC as a member of the ‘moderate price’ camp. The individual chapters trace the development of the oil industry, outline public financing and economic policy and sketch the issues involved in industrialisation, absorptive capacity and agricultural development. Examination is made of the social and physical infrastructure as well as money and banking, and the international linkages in trade, foreign aid, economic cooperation efforts and investment opportunities are elucidated. Planners in Qatar know that their revenue base in petroleum is finite, and thus investment of present surplus needs careful planning. The book therefore also outlines current government priorities and suggests areas for future investments. First published in 1979.
Book Synopsis Interpreting the Middle East by : David Sorenson
Download or read book Interpreting the Middle East written by David Sorenson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary approaches to comparative studies of the Middle East increasingly recognize how globalization and regional mass communication have blurred differences across countries. Populations travel across national borders and compare narratives about political change, economic futures, and the role of the outside world in shaping their lives. Organized by five principal themes of a regional overview, politics, economic development, social context, and international issues, Interpreting the Middle East provides a vibrant introduction to the Middle East that is compatible with this regionalist perspective. Invited authorities contribute insightful and accessible original discussions of central headline-fresh issues such as the aftermath of the Iraq war, Iran's regional ambitions, developments in the Israeli'Palestinian conflict, and the global politics of Middle East oil, gender, and religion. Section introductions by the editor integrate the contributions, and suggested readings, a glossary, and a biographical list of key persons provide helpful guidance for readers.

Download or read book Annual Review of Development Effectiveness written by Soniya Carvalho and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the sixth annual review which assesses the effectiveness of World Bank programmes in helping to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and related targets designed to address global poverty. This year's review finds that the organisation's programmes are consistent with MDG themes, but can be greatly enhanced by defining quantified, time-bound targets for poverty reduction and other development outcomes. Areas needing further attention include: helping clients to monitor and evaluate development outcomes, working to establish cross-sectoral strategies, and clarifying the role and objectives of itself and other partners. Above all, the World Bank needs to fully assess MDG implications at the corporate, country sector and global levels and to address the implications in its use of lending and administrative resources.

It features nearly 50 regional specialists, whose twelve chapters tackle the prevailing themes that gird the contemporary study of Middle East politics. Among the many topics touched upon are authoritarianism and democracy, contentious politics, international relations, regional security, military institutions, conflict and violence, political economy, economic development, religion, Islamist movements, social identity, sectarian politics, public opinion, migration and refugees, and local politics and governance. Each chapter reviews key debates and pathbreaking findings, while presenting highly curated references that illustrate the breadth and depth of ongoing research agendas"--

Book Synopsis 2001 Annual Review of Development Effectiveness by : William Battaile
Download or read book 2001 Annual Review of Development Effectiveness written by William Battaile and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fifth annual review which explores long-term development effectiveness trends and analyses the choice of lending and non-lending instruments and activities to achieve World Bank development objectives. The 2001 review confirms a significant improvement in the outcomes of the Banks lending performance. It finds that selecting the right combination and sequence of activities for a particular objective can make the difference between success and failure, whether at individual project level, for country assistance programmes or for global, sectoral and thematic priorities. At each level, there is unexploited potential to maximise strategic selectivity, and this is especially important in countries with a poor policy framework or acute institutional development needs.
Book Synopsis Economic Development in Saudi Arabia by : Ahmed Al Rajhi
Download or read book Economic Development in Saudi Arabia written by Ahmed Al Rajhi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changing political situation in the Middle East poses challenges for the economies of the region, and some see none more vulnerable to collapse than Saudi Arabia's. Yet as this study demonstrates, the fundamentals of the Kingdom's economy are relatively robust, as over three quarters of GDP is accounted for by the non-oil sector, and impressive modern industries have been established, notably in petrochemicals. The financial system functions well, and despite substantial government debts, there is low inflation and currency stability. The private sector increasingly drives the economy, although job creation has been insufficient to prevent rising youth unemployment. The development challenges Saudi Arabia faces are similar to those of other middle-income countries, and three decades of diversification have made the economy less unique than it was in the oil boom years of the 1970s.
