Book excerpt: The generation of novel synthetic materials with functionality and hierarchical ordering is a major focus of current studies in materials science and engineering. Self-assembling amphiphilic materials (such as lipids or surfactants) are an important subgroup of colloids and soft matter and are being used as an ideal candidate for such purposes due to quickly forming rich supramolecular structures across nanometer and micrometer length scales. The immiscible liquid-liquid interfaces which are constrained environment have proved to offer ideal platforms for such endeavors where surface-active nanoparticles or molecules can accumulate and self-assemble. In this thesis, we focus on self-assembly of surfactants which induce formation of nano- or microstructures at the interface between the aqueous solution of a surfactant (ionic or non-ionic) and a polar oil (such as oleic acid). First, self-assembly of different types of surfactants (ionic vs. non-ionic) at immiscible water-oil interface is used for the newly emerged liquid-in-liquid 3D printing. In this printing approach, the aqueous solution of surfactants and the oil constitute the printing phase and support liquid, respectively. Considering the low viscosity of aqueous solutions, the printed liquid constructs using this technique are significantly well-defined and relatively complex in shape. Interfacial rheology is utilized to understand viscoelastic properties of the interfacial layer made between the surfactant solution and oil phase. This gel-like material formed at the interface is robust enough that makes the printed liquid construct perfusable, enabling an injected solution to flow within its structure without any change in the shape and integrity of print. The kinetics of aggregate formation at the water-oil interface is also studied in two cases; when aqueous solution is stagnant (static) and in contact with oil phase and when the aqueous solution is flowing (dynamic) over oil phase. Then relevant models are established for these two conditions and the key aspects of formation of such structures are discussed. According to the proposed models, estimates for solubilization rate of oleic acid into aqueous solution are measured for both dynamic and static conditions. Subsequently, a computational simulation (dissipative particle dynamics) is performed to study the self-assembly behavior of each component (i.e. a cationic surfactant and a polar oil) in water. These self-assemblies behaviors are validated successfully based on the other experimental or simulation studies. Finally, mesoscopic simulation of water-oil interface with presence of all three components (surfactants/oil/water) provides us with an insight into dynamics and the underlying morphological pathway for the structure formation. The significance of this work lies in the printing of low viscous solutions of self-assembling materials into relatively complex designs which is enabled by surfactant self-assemblies and can be of use in various applications such as fabrication of liquid electronics and novel media for encapsulation of cells. This printing approach can be easily applied for different types of surfactants (ionic and non-ionic), block copolymers, biocompatible surfactants, peptides, or proteins. With having relevant kinetic modeling coupled with validated computational simulation of the system, one will be able to tailor desired microstructured materials and properties by tuning the type and concentration of constituent components, and dynamics of the system (i.e. flow rate of aqueous solution).

Formulations are often created with little understanding of the interactions between these different types of surfactants. Here a model system comprised of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), and cocomonoethanolamide (CMEA) represents the industrial surfactant blend almeo. The effect of the addition of a zwitterionic surfactant, tegobetaine, to this blend was investigated. An understanding of the phase behavior of the four component mixture was gained by building up the complexity of the mixture one surfactant at a time. Nested ternary and pseudo-ternary phase maps were created to determine the phase boundary for the dilute one phase isotropic region that is useful for formulation. The nonionic surfactant in almeo, CMEA, greatly affected the overall phase behavior of the mixture, decreasing the one phase isotropic region of phase space. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) was used to probe the microstructures present in the dilute one phase region and to understand the structural evolution that occurs upon addition of tegobetaine. The effect of these structural parameters on the bulk solution properties was established using rheology. Rheology was also used to characterize the dynamics and material properties of the wormlike micelle solutions that exist at higher surfactant concentrations. Wormlike micelle (WLM) solutions of sufficient length and concentration will entangle, which leads to viscoelasticity. Alternatively, branching can lead to the formation of a viscoelastic network. The viscoelasticity of these WLM solutions makes them relevant from a wide range of applications ranging from personal care products to oil drilling. Scaling relationships for properties of WLM exist, which are useful in product development. However, these relationships were developed for linear entangled micelles, not branched networks, and the effect of branching is unknown. Here neutron spin echo (NSE) was used to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of both entangled and branched WLM solutions and how they relate to the bulk and network properties.

Anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) are chosen as characteristic examples. Coarse-grained models are constructed from infinite dilution activity coefficient in reference solutions and atomistic simulations. Ionic groups are modeled as beads with charges distributed around the bead centers and placed in implicit dielectric medium. The model of ionic surfactant semi-quantitatively reproduces the dependence of self-assembly in solutions of CTAB and SDS on surfactant concentration, the molarity of added electrolyte. In particular, the decline of the free surfactant concentration with increasing total surfactant loading, as well as the aggregation transition in single-component surfactant cause by salt addition are predicted correctly. Addition of CTAB to a micellar solution of SDS causes a transition to worm-like micelles and then to mini-vesicles. This systematic methodology has been further extended to carbopol system. A stable carbopol film has been observed after equilibrium based on this model. Further investigation to study rheology of surfactant-carbopol system are required in future work, like add surfactant into this system.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Drag reducing (DR) surfactant solutions can reduce pumping energy requirements in district heating and cooling (DHC) systems by 30-60%. To enhance the heat transfer ability of DR surfactant solutions, three methods were investigated. Fluted tube-in-tube heat exchangers and installing destructive devices at heat exchanger entrances were found to be very effective with moderate pressure drop penalties. The former is good for new DHC systems while the latter is ideal for existing DHC systems. Ultrasonic energy break up surfactant microstructures and enhance their heat transfer ability was effective for viscoelastic drag reducing surfactant solutions. The destructive devices and ultrasonic energy temporarily destroy the surfactant microstructure which enhances heat transfer. The microstructure recovers quickly and the solution regains its DR ability downstream of the exchanger. Unsaturated hydrocarbon chains with cis and trans configurations with different counterion/surfactant ratios influence the effective DR temperature range of cationic surfactant solutions, their shear degradation, their rheological behavior and their microstructures. Shearing effects on the microstructures of different DR surfactant solutions were studied using SANS. Surfactant microstructures aligned along the flow direction under shear. However, the critical shear rate for the initiation of alignment depends on surfactant microstructure. Differences and their relation to rheological properties and DR abilities are discussed. Shear induced structures (SIS) are accompanied by first normal stress difference (N1). Non-viscoelastic DR systems do not show SIS and N1. Threadlike micelle structures appear to be present in all DR surfactant solutions under shear, however.
