High pressure gas atomization solidification process has been used to produce a series of Al-Si alloys powders between 0.2[mu]m to 150[mu]m diameter at the eutectic composition (12.6 wt pct Si). This processing technique provides powders of different sizes which solidify under different conditions (i.e. interface velocity and interface undercooling), and thus give different microstructures inside the powders. The large size powder shows dendritic and eutectic microstructures. As the powder size becomes smaller, the predominant morphology changes from eutectic to dendritic to cellular. Microstructures were quantitatively characterized by using optical microscope and SEM techniques. The variation in eutectic spacing within the powders were measured and compared with the theoretical model to obtain interface undercooling, and growth rate during the solidification of a given droplet. Also, nucleation temperature, which controls microstructures in rapidly solidified fine powders, was estimated. A microstructural map which correlates the microstructure with particle size and processing parameters is developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regarding work on the development of microstructure during rapid solidification, three areas have been addressed. The first of these involved a determination of the mechanism of formation of the so-called zones A and B in hyper-eutectic AL-transition metal alloys. The second area of work involving the development of microstructure concerns submerged phase transformations. In a study of AL-Be hyper-eutectic alloys, it was determined that solidification proceeded by a set of phase transformations that may be described by a monotectic reaction. The third area of study concerning microstructural development involves quasi-crystalline AL alloys. In fact, work done in this program has concentrated on the potentially beneficial aspects of quasi-crystalline phases in the microstructure of AL alloys. Work on the consolidation of particulate has concentrated on the use of conventional techniques (.e. extrusion) and novel processes (i.e. dynamic compaction). An estimate of the mechanical properties of rapidly solidified AL alloys has been obtained. As explained above, the effect of extrusion is to cause decomposition of the rapidly solidified microstructure. A comparison has been made, using the alloy AL-8Fe-2Mo, between the tensile properties of the decomposed microstructure (.e. extruded) and sub-scale test specimens produced by laser surface melting, consisting entirely of zone A.

Book excerpt: Additive Manufacturing for the Aerospace Industry explores the design, processing, metallurgy and applications of additive manufacturing (AM) within the aerospace industry. The book's editors have assembled an international team of experts who discuss recent developments and the future prospects of additive manufacturing. The work includes a review of the advantages of AM over conventionally subtractive fabrication, including cost considerations. Microstructures and mechanical properties are also presented, along with examples of components fabricated by AM. Readers will find information on a broad range of materials and processes used in additive manufacturing. It is ideal reading for those in academia, government labs, component fabricators, and research institutes, but will also appeal to all sectors of the aerospace industry. Provides information on a broad range of materials and processes used in additive manufacturing Presents recent developments in the design and applications of additive manufacturing specific to the aerospace industry Covers a wide array of materials for use in the additive manufacturing of aerospace parts Discusses current standards in the area of aerospace AM parts

Book excerpt: This is the second volume of an advanced textbook on microstructure and properties of materials. (The first volume is on aluminum alloys, nickel-based superalloys, metal matrix composites, polymer matrix composites, ceramics matrix composites, inorganic glasses, superconducting materials and magnetic materials). It covers titanium alloys, titanium aluminides, iron aluminides, iron and steels, iron-based bulk amorphous alloys and nanocrystalline materials. There are many elementary materials science textbooks, but one can find very few advanced texts suitable for graduate school courses. The contributors to this volume are experts in the subject, and hence, together with the first volume, it is a good text for graduate microstructure courses. It is a rich source of design ideas and applications, and will provide a good understanding of how microstructure affects the properties of materials.Chapter 1, on titanium alloys, covers production, thermomechanical processing, microstructure, mechanical properties and applications. Chapter 2, on titanium aluminides, discusses phase stability, bulk and defect properties, deformation mechanisms of single phase materials and polysynthetically twinned crystals, and interfacial structures and energies between phases of different compositions. Chapter 3, on iron aluminides, reviews the physical and mechanical metallurgy of Fe3Al and FeAl, the two important structural intermetallics. Chapter 4, on iron and steels, presents methodology, microstructure at various levels, strength, ductility and strengthening, toughness and toughening, environmental cracking and design against fracture for many different kinds of steels. Chapter 5, on bulk amorphous alloys, covers the critical cooling rate and the effect of composition on glass formation and the accompanying mechanical and magnetic properties of the glasses. Chapter 6, on nanocrystalline materials, describes the preparation from vapor, liquid and solid states, microstructure including grain boundaries and their junctions, stability with respect to grain growth, particulate consolidation while maintaining the nanoscale microstructure, physical, chemical, mechanical, electric, magnetic and optical properties and applications in cutting tools, superplasticity, coatings, transformers, magnetic recordings, catalysis and hydrogen storage.

Book excerpt: Semi-solid metal (SSM) processing, as a viable alternative manufacturing route to those of conventional casting and forging, has not yet been fully exploited despite nearly half a century since its introduction to the metal industry. The slow pace of adopting SSM routes may be due to various reasons, including capital costs, profit margins, and, most importantly, the lack of detailed analysis of various SSM processes in open literature to confidently establish their advantages over more conventional routes. Therefore, the SSM community must disseminate their findings more effectively to generate increased confidence in SSM processes in the eyes of our industrial leaders. As such, we have embarked on the task to invite the leaders in SSM research to share their findings in a Special Issue dedicated to semi-solid processing of metals and composites. SSM processing takes advantage of both forming and shaping characteristics usually employed for liquid and solid materials. In the absence of shear forces, the semi-solid metal has similar characteristics to solids, i.e., easily transferred and shaped; by applying a defined force, the viscosity is reduced and the material flows like a liquid. These unique dual characteristics have made SSM routes attractive alternatives to conventional casting on an industrial scale. With the intention of taking full advantage of SSM characteristics, it is crucial to understand SSM processing, including topics such as solidification and structural evolution, flow behavior through modelling and rheology, new processes and process control, alloy development, and properties in general. This Special Issue focuses on the recent research and findings in the field with the aim of filling the gap between industry and academia, and to shed light on some of the fundamentals of science and technology of semi-solid processing.
