This book was released on 2001 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardness measurements and microstructure examinations of Fe(-C)-Cu-Ni model alloys were performed following 1 MeV proton irradiation below 80°C. Microstructural examinations by transmission electron microscope (TEM) were carried out by means of a cross section method. A band of damage structures, parallel to the irradiated surface, was observed at a depth of 6.5 ? m in agreement with calculation based on the TRIM code. TEM observation revealed that the band consisted of high density of small black spots, which were considered to be interstitial-type dislocation loops. The amount of irradiation hardening increased with increase in copper concentration. An addition of 0.6wt%Ni to Fe-Cu alloys further increased the hardening, although the effect was reduced with increasing copper concentration. Irradiation hardening of pure iron was also significantly increased by the addition of nickel. The size and number density of the spot-like structures in Fe-Cu alloys decreased and increased, respectively, with addition of nickel. Three recovery stages were found in Fe-Cu-Ni alloys during post-irradiation isochronal annealing to 675°C: the stages are at around 150°C, 400°C and 600°C. The first stage was only observed in nickel-containing alloys, while the third stage was only observed in copper-containing alloys. After annealing to 375°C, the density of spot-like structures decreased in Fe-Cu-Ni alloy but increased in Fe-Cu alloy, while for both the size of spots increased.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though it has long been appreciated that materials differ in their response to heavy-ion irradiation, the reasons for this are not yet fully understood. To more fully characterize the effects of material, alloying element, irradiation temperature and ion dose on the probability of collapse of a displacement cascade, Cu, Ni, and dilute Ni alloys (Ni-Si and Ni-Al) have been irradiated with 50 and 100 keV heavy-ions (Kr$\sp+$ and Ni$\sp+$) at both 30 and 300K, and to doses ranging from 10$\sp{15}$-10$\sp{17}$ ions m$\sp{-2}$. The irradiations resulted in the formation of vacancy dislocation loops which were examined in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and characterized by their size, Burgers vector, and formation probability. For some of the irradiations, the HVEM-Accelerator Facility and Argonne National Laboratory was used. This facility is unique in that it allows irradiation and microstructural examination to be performed at temperatures where there is no long-range point defect mobility and the examination of the same area of sample at different dose levels.
Book Synopsis Void Swelling of Copper and Copper Alloys Induced by Heavy Ion Irradiation by : T. Muroga
Download or read book Void Swelling of Copper and Copper Alloys Induced by Heavy Ion Irradiation written by T. Muroga and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microstructures of Cu, Cu-5Ni and Cu-3.5Zn irradiated with heavy ions at 523 K to 773 K to a dose of 15 dpa were examined. The addition of nickel or zinc was shown to result in an upward shift of the peak void swelling temperature. Although the results are consistent with those of a previous fast neutron irradiation experiment taking difference in the damage rate into account, the microstructural processes seem not to be a simple shift of temperature.
Book Synopsis Microstructure and Mechanisms of Ion-Simulated Irradiation-Induced Creep of Nickel by : PL. Hendrick

This book was released on 1976 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microstructure of cold-worked, high-purity nickel has been investigated following ion-simulated irradiation-induced creep with 22-MeV deuterons and 70-MeV ?-particles. The irradiations were conducted at 224°C (435°F), at stresses between 170 and 345 MPa, and at displacement rates between 13 and 30 x 10-8 displacements per atom per second (dpa/s). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) procedures were used to prepare, observe, and photograph the microstructure of the ion-irradiated uniaxial creep specimens and companion unirradiated specimens. Examination of the ion-irradiated microstructure revealed no substantial differences between the deuteron and ?-particle irradiated specimens. In all cases, a heterogeneous distribution of defect clusters or small dislocation loops and network dislocations, or both, were observed. A significant reduction in dislocation density from the unirradiated values was seen for the irradiated specimens. It was found that the small loops and defect clusters provided effective obstacles to dislocation motion as evidenced by the bowing of dislocations between adjacent defects.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of nickel and/or zinc addition on microstructural evolution in copper under electron irradiation have been investigated to study possible effects of solid transmutants generated in copper and copper alloys by fusion neutrons. Radiation-induced dislocation density increased with increasing nickel content but was independent of zinc content during 1 MeV electron irradiation. An enrichment of nickel and a depletion of zinc at grain boundaries occurred during irradiation. Measurements of temperature and damage rate dependences of saturated dislocation loop density showed that the interstitials are deeply trapped by nickel clusters forming loop nuclei in alloys containing nickel. It was shown that clusters of nickel as a solid transmutation product can affect strongly the dislocation evolution and related properties of copper and copper alloys by trapping interstitials from relatively initial period of fusion reactor operation. On the other hand, the effects of zinc production seemed to be small, althogh possible interactions with vacancies were suggested.
Book Synopsis Microstructural Characterization of Irradiated Fe-Cu-Ni-P Model Steels by :
Download or read book Microstructural Characterization of Irradiated Fe-Cu-Ni-P Model Steels written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microstructure of Fe-Cu-Ni-P model pressure vessel steels after neutron irradiation and thermal aging has been characterized by atom probe field-ion microscopy and augmented by transmission electron microscopy. High densities of small, roughly spherical or disc shaped copper clusters/precipitates were observed in the neutron irradiated alloys that contained copper. Small spherical phosphorus clusters were observed in the irradiated copper-free alloys, and copper phosphides were observed in a high phosphorus Fe-Cu-Ni-P alloy. None of these clusters/precipitates were observed in the thermally aged materials. The increases in the tensile and yield strengths that were observed after neutron irradiation resulted from these clusters and other lattice defects.

Download or read book The Effects of Applied Stress on the Irradiation Induced Microstructures of Dilute Nickel Alloys written by T. Atkins and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study has been performed on Ni-2.48% Si alloy specimens irradiated, in the stressed and unstressed condition, to a dose of 0.2 dpa at 623 K, with 3.5-MeV protons in the Proton Irradiation Creep Facility on the Harwell 6-MeV Van de Graaff accelerator. The objective of the work was to obtain detailed information on the size distributions of Frank loops, the primary irradiation produced microstructural feature in this material, which could be compared directly with the measured irradiation creep behavior. Low dose irradiations have been employed in order to minimize loop-loop interactions and maintain the microstructural record.

Book Synopsis Nickel Ion Irradiation Effects on the Microstructure of 2 1/4% Cr 1% Mo Steel and a Comparison with Neutron Irradiation Data by : RA. Dodd
Download or read book Nickel Ion Irradiation Effects on the Microstructure of 2 1/4% Cr 1% Mo Steel and a Comparison with Neutron Irradiation Data written by RA. Dodd and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2 1/4 Cr 1% Mo steel, heat treated to consist of upper and lower bainite and ferrite, has been shown to undergo substantial microstructural modification when irradiated with 14-MeV nickel ions at 500°C to 350 dpa at the peak damage depth. The original cementite (Fe3C) in upper and lower bainite was replaced by Chi phase, M7C3 and M2C in upper bainite, and Chi and M7C3 in lower bainite. The originally precipitate-free ferrite contained a significant fraction of G phase after irradiation. The replacement of Fe3C by M7C3 and M2C is consistent with the fact that M7C3 and M2C form in a quenched and tempered 2 1/4 Cr 1 Mo steel, but at higher tempering temperatures than does Fe3C. On the other hand, Chi and G phases have not been reported to occur in this steel as a result of thermal treatments. The steel is resistant to void swelling, which amounted to 0.2% or less even at the rather high dpa levels employed in this study. The quantitative data for precipitate and void number densities and sizes agree quite well with a companion neutron irradiation study of the same steel possessing an identical microstructure.
