Book excerpt: These basic results regarding the microscopic grain-interactions are generic to granular media and have important consequences for constitutive modeling. In particular we show that kinetic theories, which assume binary collisions, only apply below the network transition. In this regime we show that Enskog kinetic theory agrees with data from the simulations. We then proceed to introduce two analytical theories that use the observed microscopic grain-interactions to make predictions. First we propose a new constitutive model--the Force-Network model--that quantitatively predicts constitutive relations using properties of the force-networks for all values of xi. Second we demonstrate that STZ theory, which predicts constitutive relations by assuming certain dynamical correlations in amorphous materials, is in agreement with both the microscopic motion of grains and measured constitutive relations for large xi.

Book excerpt: In view of its extreme complexity the mathematical description of the mechanical behaviour of granular materials is an extremely difficult task. Today many different models compete with each other. However, the complexity of the models hinders their comparison, and the potential users are confused and, often, disencouraged. This book is expected to serve as a milestone in the present situation, to evaluate the present methodes, to clear up the situation, to focus and encourage for further research activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly all solids are compised of grains. However most studies treat materials as a continious solid. The book applies analysis used on loose granular materials to dense grainular materials. This title’s main focus is devoted to static or dynamic loadings applied to dense materials, although rapid flows and widely dispersed media are also mentioned briefly. Three essential areas are covered: Local variable analysis: Contact forces, displacements and rotations, orientation of contacting particles and fabric tensors are all examples of local variables. Their statistical distributions, such as spatial distribution and possible localization, are analyzed, taking into account experimental results or numerical simulations. Change of scales procedures: Also known as “homogenization techniques”, these procedures make it possible to construct continuum laws to be used in a continuum mechanics approach or performing smaller scale analyses. Numerical modeling: Several methods designed to calculate approximate solutions of dynamical equations together with unilateral contact and frictional laws are presented, including molecular dynamics, the distinct element method and non-smooth contact dynamics. Numerical examples are given and the quality of numerical approximations is discussed.

Book excerpt: Mechanical behaviors of materials are highly influenced by their architectures and/or microstructures. Hence, progress in material science involves understanding and modeling the link between the microstructure and the material behavior at different scales. This book gathers contributions from eminent researchers in the field of computational and experimental material modeling. It presents advanced experimental techniques to acquire the microstructure features together with dedicated numerical and analytical tools to take into account the randomness of the micro-structure.

Book excerpt: Granular matter displays a variety of peculiarities that distinguish it from other appearances studied in condensed matter physics and renders its overall mathematical modelling somewhat arduous. Prominent directions in the modelling granular flows are analyzed from various points of view. Foundational issues, numerical schemes and experimental results are discussed. The volume furnishes a rather complete overview of the current research trends in the mechanics of granular matter. Various chapters introduce the reader to different points of view and related techniques. New models describing granular bodies as complex bodies are presented. Results on the analysis of the inelastic Boltzmann equations are collected in different chapters. Gallavotti-Cohen symmetry is also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Granular materials consist of dense pack of solid grains and a pore-filling element such as a fluid or a solid matrix. The grains interact via elastic repulsion, friction, adhesion and other surface forces. External loading leads to grain deformations as well as cooperative particle rearrangements. The particle deformations are of particular importance in many industry applications and research subjects, such as powder metallurgy and soil mechanics. The response of granular materials to external loading is complex, especially in case when failure occurs: the mode of the failure can be diffuse or localized, and the development of specimen pattern can be drastically different when the specimen can no longer sustain external loading. In this thesis, a thorough numerical analysis based on a discrete element method is carried out to investigate the macroscopic and microscopic behavior of granular materials when a failure occurs. The numerical simulations include the vanishing of the second-order work instability criterion to detect failure. Furthermore, it is proved that the vanishing of second-order work coincides with the change from a quasi-static regime to a dynamic regime in the response of the specimen. Then, microstructure evolution is investigated. Evolution of force-chains and grain-loops are investigated during the deformation process until reaching the failure. The second-order work is once again taken into account to elucidate the local aspect that governs the failure, taking place at the particle scale. The collapse of the discrete specimen when it turns from quasi-static to dynamic regime is accompanied with a burst in kinetic energy. This rise of kinetic energy occurs when the internal stress cannot balance with the external loading when a small perturbation is added to the boundary, resulting in a difference between the internal and external second-order works of the system. The mesostructures have a symbiosis relationship with each other and their evolution decides the macroscopic behavior of the discrete system. The distribution of the collapse of force-chain correlates with the vanishing of the second-order work at the grain scale. The mesostructures play an important role in the instability of granular media. The second-order work can be used as an effective criterion to detect the instability of the system on both the macroscale and microscale (grain scale).

Mühlhaus, CSIRO, Nedlands, Australia When the characteristic length-scale (‘fabric dimension’) of the microstructure of materials is not small when compared to the macroscopic dimensions, the well established framework for the modelling of deformation processes for simple materials needs enhancement. To introduce an internal length scale, one has to resort to continuum models such as Nonlocal Theories, Cosserat or Gradient-type Models, Discrete Element and Lattice Theories or modified Viscoplastic Models. These new approaches are addressed in this volume. It includes contributions from research areas as diverse as bio-mechanics, concrete engineering and solid state physics. Generalised continuum models and its applications are presented and complemented by numerical and analytical tools for the solution of boundary value problems.

It covers a broad range of topics from basic concepts and methods towards more advanced aspects and technical details applicable to the current research on granular materials. Discrete-element simulations of granular materials are based on four basic models (molecular dynamics, contact dynamics, quasi-static and event driven) dealing with frictional contact interactions and integration schemes for the equations of dynamics. These models are presented in the first chapters of the book, followed by various methods for sample preparation and monitoring of boundary conditions, as well as dimensionless control parameters. Granular materials encountered in real life involve a variety of compositions (particle shapes and size distributions) and interactions (cohesive, hydrodynamic, thermal) that have been extensively covered by several chapters. The book ends with two applications in the field of geo-materials.

Book excerpt: The work performed under this grant, focused on the process of initiation and growth of shear bands in frictional granules. Such localized deformations commonly occur in particulate media and are of considerable engineering and scientific importance. They occur in a variety of areas of advanced materials processing, at different scales. They are a common mode of failure in soil masses and geological formations. A technique has been developed to study the deformation of lead doped lines of granules within the sample of a granular material, using the UCSD 5 large hollow cylindrical cell, together with flash X ray photography. The special cell has been modified for this purpose, and several successful tests have been performed. The facilities are then employed to develop in depth fundamental understanding of the microstructure of a shearband zone, and the spatial variation of the accompanying deformation. With this technique, we have captured the deformation that leads to shearband formation in several preliminary experiments. We have successfully solidified the sample containing shearbands, in situ. using a polymeric resin. We have then prepared sections for complete microstructural analysis, and have performed some preliminary analysis of the results. These and related issues are discussed in this report.
