This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this dissertation is to establish an understanding of processing - microstructure - mechanical behavior relationship in Mg-1wt% SiC metal matrix nano-composites fabricated via an ultrasonic assisted casting process, with the emphasis on the effect of the distribution of nanoparticles on this relationship. Ultrasonic assisted casting has been proved as an effective technique to distribute nanoparticles in Mg metal matrix nano-composites (MMNCs). Mg MMNCs reinforced with 1 wt% SiC nanoparticles, were cast by ultrasonic cavitation-based dispersion methods. Microstructural analyses of as cast specimens were conducted to characterize the grain size, shape and distribution, SiC nanoparticle size and distribution, and nanoparticle-matrix interface. Average grain size for the ultrasonic assisted cast composite specimens was 72 [mu]m compared to 181 [mu]m for pure Mg samples prepared by the same method. The average measured SiC nanoparticle size was 66 nm. TEM studies showed good local dispersion of SiC nanoparticles, with only a few small, widely spaced clusters. HRTEM showed a clean interface between SiC nanoparticles and the Mg matrix, with no evidence of secondary phases. The yield strength of Mg-1 wt% SiC nanocomposites was 67 MPa, which showed improvement from 47 MPa for the pure Mg samples. This extra strengthening is due to Orowan and Hall-Petch effects. Fatigue experiments were conducted to characterize the cyclic stress-strain response of pure Mg and Mg-1wt% SiC samples at 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.6% plastic strain amplitudes. The analyses of the cyclic stress response curves and hysteresis loops, combined with post failure TEM analyses provided an understanding of the role of twinning, and twin-particle interactions on the cyclic deformation behavior of Mg MMNCs. Tensile twinning and basal slip are the main forms of deformation mechanisms under compression, followed by detwinning and basal slip in subsequent tension. Fatigue lives of Mg MMNCs are comparable to pure Mg samples at low plastic strain amplitudes (0.2%), but deteriorate rapidly at higher plastic strain amplitudes. TEM studies indicated that SiC particles may increase the CRSS values for twinning by creating an obstacle to twin growth. This can reduce the hardening effect due to twinning in Mg MMNCs during cyclic deformation, but results in an overall increase in hardening due to slip activation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semi-solid metal (SSM) processing, as a viable alternative manufacturing route to those of conventional casting and forging, has not yet been fully exploited despite nearly half a century since its introduction to the metal industry. The slow pace of adopting SSM routes may be due to various reasons, including capital costs, profit margins, and, most importantly, the lack of detailed analysis of various SSM processes in open literature to confidently establish their advantages over more conventional routes. Therefore, the SSM community must disseminate their findings more effectively to generate increased confidence in SSM processes in the eyes of our industrial leaders. As such, we have embarked on the task to invite the leaders in SSM research to share their findings in a Special Issue dedicated to semi-solid processing of metals and composites. SSM processing takes advantage of both forming and shaping characteristics usually employed for liquid and solid materials. In the absence of shear forces, the semi-solid metal has similar characteristics to solids, i.e., easily transferred and shaped; by applying a defined force, the viscosity is reduced and the material flows like a liquid. These unique dual characteristics have made SSM routes attractive alternatives to conventional casting on an industrial scale. With the intention of taking full advantage of SSM characteristics, it is crucial to understand SSM processing, including topics such as solidification and structural evolution, flow behavior through modelling and rheology, new processes and process control, alloy development, and properties in general. This Special Issue focuses on the recent research and findings in the field with the aim of filling the gap between industry and academia, and to shed light on some of the fundamentals of science and technology of semi-solid processing.
