Using crumb rubber processed from waste tires on the pavement could relieve the pressure of waste tire on the environment and improve the performance of the pavement as well. The application of crumb rubber on the pavement using the dry process was proved to be a cost-effective strategy in some projects, however, the interaction between the rubber and asphalt binder was unknown in the rubber modified asphalt mixture using the dry process, especially when reclaimed asphalt pavement was adopted. The performance improvement of the rubber particle to the asphalt mixture was closely related to the interaction. The influence of aging on the characteristics of rubber modified asphalt mixture using the dry process is critical to its long-term performance. The scope of the dissertation is to evaluate the performance of rubber modified asphalt mixture using a dry process when reclaimed asphalt pavement was adopted. The influence of aging on the characteristics of the rubber modified asphalt mixture and the extracted asphalt binder were investigated. This dissertation proposed the volumetric design of rubber modified asphalt mixture using the dry process. The aggregate gradation determination, rubber modified asphalt mixture preparation, design binder content determination, and moisture susceptibility evaluation were proposed. The quality control of the laboratory mixture design procedure was critical to guarantee the consistency of the asphalt mixture design in the laboratory and the results of mixture construction in the plant. The high temperature rutting performance and the low temperature cracking performance of plant mixed and laboratory compacted asphalt mixture was evaluated. The influence of various factors, which included mixture design parameters of the asphalt mixture (nominal maximum aggregate size, reclaimed asphalt pavement content, and asphalt content), rubber modification, mixture air void content, test temperature, and aging procedure, on the rutting and low temperature characteristics of asphalt mixtures were evaluated. Based on the evaluation of different assessment parameters, the rubber addition and the rubber addition and aging were the two most critical factors that influenced the rutting and low temperature cracking performance of different asphalt mixtures. The effect of the Trichloroethylene solvent in asphalt binder was investigated, and the extracted asphalt binder was assessed and compared with the base asphalt binder and rubber modified base asphalt binder. Both the existence of Trichloroethylene and the content of Trichloroethylene had a significant influence on the |G*| of unaged and PAV aged asphalt binder. The Trichloroethylene in the extracted asphalt binder significantly influenced the actual performance of the asphalt binder in the reclaimed asphalt binder, thus potentially compromising the success mixture design. The modified extraction procedure was proposed to improve the accuracy of the extraction procedure. The rubber particles in the asphalt mixture using the dry process were not totally interacted with asphalt binder, only the interacted rubber particles were extracted, and the influence of the interacted rubber particle was assessed. The aged asphalt binder weakened the low temperature performance of the extracted asphalt binder. The aged asphalt binder and rubber in extracted asphalt binder guaranteed the asphalt binder to sustain heavy traffic load, thus improved the permanent deformation resistance of asphalt binder.

Book excerpt: Studies show that the microstructure of the fine aggregate matrix has a significant influence on the mechanical properties and evolution of damage in an asphalt mixture. However, very little work has been done to quantitatively characterize the microstructure of the asphalt binder within the fine aggregate matrix of asphalt mixtures. The first objective of this study was to quantitatively characterize the three dimensional microstructure of the asphalt binder within the fine aggregate matrix (FAM) of an asphalt mixture and compare the influence of binder content, coarse aggregate gradation, and fine aggregate gradation on this microstructure. Studies indicate that gradation of the fine aggregate has the most influence of the degree of anisotropy whereas gradation of the coarse aggregate has the most influence on the direction anisotropy of the asphalt mastic within the fine aggregate matrix. Addition of asphalt binder or adjustments to the fine aggregate gradation also resulted in a more uniform distribution of the asphalt mastic within the fine aggregate matrix. The second objective of this study was to compare the internal microstructure of the mortar within a full-scale asphalt mixture to the internal microstructure of the FAM specimen and also conduct a limited evaluation of the influence of mixture properties and methods of compaction on the engineering properties of the FAM specimens. Fatigue cracking is a significant form of pavement distress in flexible pavements. The properties of the sand-asphalt mortars or FAM can be used to characterize the evolution of fatigue crack growth and self-healing in full-scale asphalt mixtures. The results from this study, although limited in number, indicate that in most cases the SGC (Superpave Gyratory Compactor) compacted FAM specimen had a microstructure that most closely resembled the microstructure of the mortar within a full-scale asphalt mixture. Another finding from this study was that, at a given level of damage, the healing characteristic of the three different types of FAM mixes evaluated was not significantly different. This indicates that the healing rate is mostly dictated by the type of binder and not significantly influenced by the gradation or binder content, as long as the volumetric distribution of the mastic was the same.

Warm mixture asphalt (WMA) refers to the technologies which allow a substantial reduction of mixing and compaction temperatures of asphalt mixtures through decreasing the viscosity of asphalt binders. In general, the crumb rubber modified (CRM) asphalt mixes require higher temperatures compared to conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA). However, if the technologies of WMA are incorporated, it is predicted to reduce the mixing and compaction temperatures of rubberized asphalt mixtures. For utilization of rubberized mixes in WMA industry, it is needed to investigate the properties of CRM binders with warm additives depending on CRM contents, additive types, aging states, and other experiment variables. This research investigated CRM binders with wax warm additives, and the objectives included: 1) quantifying viscosity changes dependent upon mixing temperature and hauling period through Rotational viscometer test; 2) evaluating the effect of blending time on viscosity; 3) investigating the performance properties of recycled aged CRM binders containing wax additives through Superpave binder tests; 4) evaluating the microstructural properties using an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) and an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The following conclusions were drawn based on the comprehensive laboratory investigation: 1) crumb rubber contents and wax types were found to have significant influence on the viscosity properties of CRM binders; 2) CRM binder with wax additive (LEADCAP) showed better rutting and cracking resistance compared to the control CRM binder for all aging states; 3) the wax additive in recycled CRM binder is observed to play an important role in binder properties even after subjecting to long-term aging processes; 4) the microstructures on morphology images seemed to have a good relation with the engineering properties of warm CRM binders.

Book excerpt: The addition of polymers to bitumen allows the modification of certain physical properties, such as softening point, brittleness and ductility, of the bitumen. Polymer modified bitumen: Properties and characterisation provides a valuable and in-depth coverage of the science and technology of polymer modified bitumen. After an initial introduction to bitumen and polymer modified bitumen, the book is divided into two parts. Chapters in part one focus on the preparation and properties of a range of polymer modified bitumen, including polymer bitumen emulsions, modification of bitumen with poly (urethanes), waste rubber and plastic and polypropylene fibres.
